I mean, the Soviet Union boycotted the 1984 Olympics--obviously a political decision. That broadcasters could still discuss how the absence of various Soviet competitors might affect the remaining athletes' chances at winning medals without remarking on the merits of the boycott itself.

The budget showdown that has created this looming crisis is political. But if this thing actually happens, there are plenty of good questions that will come up surrounding the status of LSU student-athletes and the short- and long-term implications for their athletic programs--all of which could be intelligently discussed without resort to partisan or ideological politics.

Thing is, I actually do think the cultural impact the Fab Five made was more important than their on-court record. They were the coolest thing in sports for 2+ years. That's nothing to sneeze at.

It might be difficult for MSU to pull this off when so many of their players are on probation and not allowed to leave the state.
|2 days 1 hour ago||Hudson||
I am high on Hudson because I was impressed by his highlight films, because he performed well in the all-star game he was in, because he was a late riser in the recruiting rankings (rather than a guy who is really good as a younger players and then levels off), because he seems like a good fit for the "hybrid space player" position, and yes, because other people whose opinions I respect (including Brian) are also high on him. But I thought we were having a nice discussion here--why the resort to ad hominem?

This just seems right.
|2 days 3 hours ago||DBs||
Sure, that's a fair point. And I am certainly hoping more top DB prospects come to Michigan regardless. All I was doing was trying to put myself in Thomas's shoes.
Hill, Thomas, and Hudson haven't proven anything at the college level. But does anyone here really believe those guys aren't going to pan out? I don't. Sure, an injury or something could happen, but talent-wise those guys--Hill and Thomas especially--are pretty damn good bets and they will have first-rate position coaches. I get the "well look at Terry Richardson" thing but these prosepcts feel a lot different--they look the part, they have the measurables, they aren't out underperforning in all-star games (or in Hudson's case, are excelling in them), they were evaluated and recrutied by a much better staff...
Hudson is relevant because he will probably be playing NB after Peppers leaves, which blocks another possible route to early playing time for a 2017 CB recruit.
I concede this is far from airtight evidence but I have to believe there are plenty of teams where the secondary depth charts from 2017-2020 look much more wide open.
|2 days 5 hours ago||Thomas||
He seems like a smart kid. So I just assumed that he wouldn't be interested in playing for MSU, Ohio State, ND, etc.
|2 days 6 hours ago||Ambry Thomas||
Honest, if I am Ambry Thomas and I see that Michigan has just signed Lavert Hill, David Long, and Khaleke Hudson, with Keith Washington coming off a redshirt, I might look outside the Midwest too. That's two highly-talented guys who are very likely to start at CB by 2017 and another guy who seems tailor-made for the NB spot. Yes, I know top recruits tend to think they can beat out anyone for a spot, yada yada, but realistically Thomas would have a much tougher path to the field at M than most other places.

I think some people are biased against players who retire from the game before they've lost the ability to play at a high level.

I was teaching my daughter how to play euchre a couple weeks ago. It was unusually difficult to do so because my wife has forbidden utterances of the word "trump" in our house. So maybe now I'll just call trump "Harbaugh."

These recruiting primers are well-done and all, but I miss the old icons. Especially Nefarious Eduardo.
|4 days 3 hours ago||Announcement Timing||
The SEC is not going to be able to stop it. So the more the stakes get raised, the better it ends for Harbaugh and Michigan.
|4 days 6 hours ago||Defense||
I'm expecting the senior version of Gedeon to be at least equal to Bolden, as Gedeon is probably the better athlete of the two and I think Bolden had some issues with thinking too much. But maybe that is just wishful thinking, though we have seen players go from being mediocre as underclassmen to having big senior years in the past.
I like Bush and think he will be a good player--but would be a bit worried if he winds up as a starter in 2016. Freshman LBs scare me--even if they are early enrollees. I'd much rather see the lights go on for guys like McCray, Winovich, or Furbush than have to depend on a true freshman.
I am less worried about the safety position than you are. Hill and Thomas are a respectable starting pair and if Kinnel can play that's probably all we'll need. I am also thinking it would make sense for Watson to give safety a shot this spring, since he has the body for it and doesn't have much of a path to PT at corner.

I'm not a scientist. But perhaps hype is the missing ingredient that explains why the fusion experiments always fail?
|4 days 22 hours ago||I agree, I think Harbaugh has||
I agree, I think Harbaugh has shown that he's not interested in putting guys in just to get them game reps. Did he ever even pull the starters from the Citrus Bowl? I know Rudock played the whole game, and it seemed like most of the other starters were in the whole time also. This seems kind of unorthodox, as most coaches tend to think that PT is valuable, even if it comes in garbage time. But Harbaugh seems not to agree.

Kareem Walker is already enrolled, so the staff should have a pretty good idea what to expect out him by the end of spring practice. Hopefully they like what they see enough to have the difficult conversation with Smith about "hybrid roles."

|5 days 6 hours ago||Moses||
Don't offer him, I say. If we offer him, then we are just like any other school--he knows he can play for us any time he wants. I say don't offer him a scholarship, don't call him on the phone, act like he doesn't even exist. Let him long for that Michigan offer, let him crave it, obsess about it.
Then, maybe around signing day next year, maybe we let him know there might be an extra spot in the class if he, you know, and might be interested and isn't doing anything else that weekend.

They had true freshmen at QB and RB last season. Now those guys will be sophomores, and they have a very good defense. I do agree that top-10 seems like a stretch though, but they should be comfortably inside the top-25.
