I gotta go with da Bears bus on this one, Bob.
It will all depend on who is hired and when he arrives. Yes, the team can be pretty good, but any optimism should be tempered by recent performance. And this is assuming nobody transfers...
|2 days 13 hours ago||No||
|2 weeks 1 day ago||OK, so how about a much tougher question?||
What was the least ridiculous game of the Hoke era? 2011 Nebraska? Even that one still had a goofy Denard pick on a screen pass attempt, but I think that the Nebraska D just made a good play.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||After further thought||
This was definitely a mild case of blue balls eventually staved off by simply going to sleep.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Not sure about that||
It seemed to me that they were blitzing more on that last drive, and NU was running quicker plays. I don't think it was a prevent D issue, but I guess the UFR will tell.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Illinois game||
I think I said that the Illinois game was "like good sex with a bad person." It was thrilling even though there was every reason to feel awful about it. I don't know what the hell to call this.

|3 weeks 1 day ago||Nope||
Hoke will never be a great coach. Will never regularly compete for B1G titles. Will never sniff the national playoff. He's simply not capable. The wrorst thing that could happen to Michigan football would be to keep Hoke around for one more year, see him go 8-4 and then continue the mediocrity.
If Harbaugh is not available, someone else is. Someone who is a much better football coach than Brady Hoke.

Brian, thanks for asking Ace to cool it with the Pioneer stuff. He's almost got me wanting The Drake to fail now.

Sorry, Seth. Looks like nobody's gonna read Dear Diary today...

Can't wait to see how DB DB turns this one into a multi-day story.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||Brilliant||
Excellent work as always, Brian. You've captured the moment effectively.
I can't wait for the season to be over so that we can end this embarrassment and proceed with new ones next year. Anything different would be better than this.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||Hoke's favorite explanation||
It seems whenever there is a problem, Hoke plays dumb and says he didn't know. This happened with the tent stake. It happened with the Morris concussion. He doesn't seem to realize that ignorance is not a viable defense for a head coach.
The man is in over his head, and instead of finding a way to deal with that, he keeps digging his hole deeper.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||Totally fine with you cutting it short||
In fact, this is pretty much how I'm feeling about anything Michigan-related this season:
|4 weeks 3 days ago||Oh, oh, I know!||
I thnk we all have a pretty good idea what the author thinks about Hoke now. He thinks pretty much the same thing he thought when he wrote this, only with a lot more evidence to back it up.
|7 weeks 2 days ago||Oh you did it||
I had forgotten about the Pat Massey Vince Young tango. Now I do indeed feel worse.
|8 weeks 3 days ago||Not Hubris||
I get your point, but I don't see Hoke displaying Hubris. He's not "putting himself at the level of the gods in defiance." I see him as a buffoon who knows he's not that bright. I mean, we now know he's not that bright (time out at the end of the half, 10 men on the field in last week's punt return, etc.). He covers up his self-consciousness with stubbornness, but I don't see it as arrogance per se. In sum, I think it's a relatively humble guy who has dug himself a hole and is down there with only a shovel, so maybe if he keeps digging something good will happen. He doesn't see another option because he doesn't have the capacity for abstract thought.
And RichRod never struck me as displaying hubris at Michigan. "I want to be a Michigan Man" near the end of his tenure shows how beaten down he felt.
Brandon is a typical arrogant CEO, and there I see your label applying. He is also a buffoon, but unfortunately is completely unaware of this fact. That makes him all the more dangerous.

This cartoon aired on the New Yorker's website, like two hours ago:
|1 year 12 weeks ago||Gambeta||
The google translate first option is not great on that one, Ace. "Pura Gambeta" in Latin America would mean more "at full dodge" which is obviously a pretty shaky translation as well.
I was gonna recommend the comments. They are indeed hilarious. My favorite is from justinianofrias: "Don't bullshit me. He's covered in soap."

Anyone else see a major ripoff of the Dead Kennedy's logo in #4?
|1 year 33 weeks ago||The Spot?||
They used to focus on whether someone "beat the guy to the spot." In this case there is no question using that criteria. Did we stop using that criteria because of some other technicalities? (Obviously beating someone to the spot by beating them about the face with your elbow would never have counted.)
|1 year 41 weeks ago||That place you describe||
Brian, I believe that place you describe is Venezuela. Not a political comment at all. But if you have ever played any sport against Venezuelans, you know they are fiercly "caradura" competitors, and will work any angle to their advantage.

I was thinking the other day that the internet is not funny anymore, and nobody's really making anybody laugh nowadays. I am wrong.
|2 years 27 weeks ago||Hope this is the start of a long legacy||
...with seats reserved at the table for Kovacs and Denard if all goes well.
|2 years 28 weeks ago||Stooges||
As some have said above, Stooges are necessary (TV Eye, Loose, Now I Wanna be Your Dog all more than viable). And MC5's Kick out the Jams is the most obvious and winning choice ever.
If you need something cheesier, Detroit acts like Von Bondies ("C'mon C'mon") a few tracks from Detroit Cobras, and work. Hell, even Alice Cooper was born in Detroit.
And no Kid Rock, please. We've been tortured enough.

I swear this was funnier in my head. Need moar sleep.

Which one is the sex offender? I mean, there's no captiion or anything. Oh, he's the one that's too tubby to pick up shoulder pads off the floor? Ah, ok, got it.

...is the media simply printing this shit without even the slightest fisking. I mean, I know I shoudln't be surprised after everything that's gone down the last 10+ years, but what the hell??
|2 years 51 weeks ago||NCAA's main issue seems to be control||
In college football they have hardly any (when compared to the other sports). They maintain the archaic rules in part to control what they can. If that is one of the major goals of their system, then #s 1 and 3 above should be amenable to the NCAA.
Following #3, about a year ago I came up with an idea similar to that, but addressing the TV revenues. It is basically that if the networks are using the images of the players to promote games, they should get paid based on a fixed scale determined by the NCAA. This lets them keep all that control, but fairly gives the money to the players who are actually bringing it in. Nobody's paying to see Will Hagerup (gifs are free, yo). But Denard puts butts in sofas and viewing lots of Coors Light ads.
The long version is here for those willing to indulge.
The worst part about this time of year is all the "outraged interlopers" who think they need to comment on playoffs and every other issue about the sport, yet they don't understand how it's different from the NFL. But whatever. Good post, Brian.
|2 years 51 weeks ago||Exacto||
I was going to say this exact thing. It is so blindingly obvious to have this game in Chicago, even if you have to do it at the Rosemont Horizon on an arenaball field. OK, not quite, but why not have the Midwest's major conference host its crowning event at the Mecca of the Midwest? These aren't the teams with the biggest fan bases in the conference, but they've gotta be #s 5 an 7 at worst. This is pathetic.
