a terrible blight on our fine country
We've been through favorite songs, television shows, and probably others I'm missing, but what were or are your favorite comic books? What era were they from. Also, what were some of your favorite ads from the back, and how did it turn out if you ordered something from one of those ads?
My favorites, and this is from the 1960s were Archie and Richie Rich, none of which do I think would be worth much even if I had kept them. My brother was into army related ones, so I read a lot of those as well. If those had any context at all, they were always WWII related. I did once order what I thought was a book of 1001 magic tricks for one dollar. What it ended up being was a catalogue that you could order (and pay for) different magic related items. Was I ever disappointed. It was a good lesson on caveat emptor which I suppose is better learned young and without a large outlay involved.
So what comic books have you read? What ads do you remember? Did you every buy anything from the ads?
Well, with 8 days left until this season kicks off I feel like this would be a fun time to have everyone on the greatest UM site tell stories about their favorite Michigan football moment. This doesn't necessarily have to be an in-game moment, but can involve memories from tailgating, fant interactions etc.
I guess I'll start:
I actually have 2. My first was when I asked my dad why he was a Michigan fan and why he had raised me to be a Michigan fan. He told me he became a Michigan fan after a weekend in Columbus as a high school senior. He rode his bike from his brother's house to the Horseshoe and snuck onto the field and sat at the fifty yard line. He got caught and was subsequently fined by the University for trespassing. This pissed him off and thus be was henceforth a Michigan fan. Therefore, had my father not been busted that day, I would have probably been raised an OSU fan. Thank Christ that isn't the case.
The second is my first trip to the Big House. UM-Iowa in 1997. The game was amazing, but the first moment walking into the stadium will be with me for the rest of my life.
I have a recording of a parody of University of Ohio State's fight song from the 1970s (I think) that Michigan radio stations used to play. It is awesome. "Husband-hunting dames" is a wonderful insult. Enjoy:
If anyone has more info on this - origin, singers, year, etc., - it would be appreciated. Or if you have an original recording without the "Tressel" dub.
EDIT: I see Spawn of Mzone also posted this last year, but this is a better quality recording.
