"You know how Kyle Flood still has a job? Yeah, all Jourdan."
Besides just to quit drinking and go to bed, what are some ideas for what to do from now until Tuesday Morning? Also, the retired jerseys, #1 jersey...basically jerseys in general are a little over analyzed, but Helmet Stickers.
Let's talk Helmet Stickers.
It's going to be a long day.
Today marks the 53rd birthday of the original and still best #1 jersey wearer. If that doesn't make some of us feel old, nothing will.
It was great seeing him on the sideline this season, even if he didn't seem to know he was being introduced. Oblivious or just being cool? I vote for the latter.
I know most of you are just waiting to click on this link and then ask the mods to delete it, but relax, this is real information... thanks to Touchdowns no flags for grabbing the picture last night...
Last night was the Michigan Coaches Tour in Chicago, they had lots of postcards/fliers made by the athletic department/alumni association. One in particular was a flier for the Michigan opener vs. Alabama. It said "History in the making... be part of it" and depicted what certainly appears to be denard in the UTL/Michigan State style jerseys, and wearing the #1.
Mods or someone embed the image below for me please as I don't know how to do it from my Mac.
Not much of a twitter user but here it is: http://pic.twitter.com/zJopqkpJ
Assume that someone at least approved this? I would suspect it could signal something coming down the line...
Angelique's piece on Braylon talks mostly about the #1 jersey and his relationship with Coach Hoke... but there's some interesting hints that he wasn't afraid to let out as well:
"I had great time," Edwards said of his visit to Schembechler Hall last weekend. "It was like home again. Brady's door was open, he was on the phone, told the person he'd call him back and he gave me a big hug. (Running backs coach) Freddie Jackson (entering his 20th season as a Michigan assistant) is the last of the dinosaurs there. He's happy again. It's pretty exciting.
Who would you nominate for the next player to wear the coveted #1? I would like to nominate Roy Roundtree for this year. No, he's not the tallest, fastest, quickest reciever we have. He simply makes big plays on the field, and he seems to have a knack for coming up with a great catch when the game's on the line.
As it is Spring and the post-Paulus era has given me far less Blue discussion fodder, I'm interested in the possibility of Greg Mathews getting the #1 jersey for the fall.
Obviously, he hasn't had nearly the career as other #1's (no 80 catch, 1,000 yard seasons, etc.), but I think it bears considering that Mathews stats were trending towards a breakout Junior and Senior season before last season's offensive collapse. With more consistent qb play, I'm inclined to think that Mathews stats, even with his brief injury last season, could have been drastically more impressive at this point in his career. Perhaps, the coaching staff should consider the epic drop-off of qb talent last year and revive this important tradition for a guy that seemingly could have earned it with his numbers. The guy had nearly 40 catches from the 3 spot in the Mallett/Henne 07 season and with Mario/Adrian gone, he seemed poised to take the reigns. Though we'll have to wait until the 09 season to see how good he can be as a first option with a qb with reasonable accuracy (assuming Forcier's the guy), I think the coaching staff could recognize Greg, not as a statistical marvel, but as a senior whose weathered the rough transition and is now ready to lead.
For aesthetics sake, reviving the #1 tradition this year could give some of the younger guys something to strive for. Even for me, growing up out of state (SEC country) and not a Michigan fan, I remember always thinking the #1 was a pretty bad-ass tradition - one that said 'this guy has worked hard and will soon be playing on Sundays'. While Mathews numbers might not add up, I've always heard that Mathews is a solid worker (07 Maulbetsch Award) and the #1 could cement his status as the natural leader of our young receiving corps.
Tough sell, but thoughts?
