Pretty Posts Sticky

Wondering how to blockquote? Don't know how to embed videos? This sticky is your go-to thread for help with making your comment or thread look as good as the most computer literate users here, hopefully in steps simple enough for [rival joke here] to understand. Before we get to it, there have been helpful threads in the past, such as this one from ShockFX (which goes into more plain text detail than I will here). I'm not promising anything revolutionary as much as providing a link for "one stop shopping" to help people with common problems.

How do I get a quote to show up in the fancy yellow box?

  1. Click "switch to plain text editor". This is a link at the bottom of the text box for either a comment or post/diary.
  2. Write out <blockquote></blockquote>
  3. Paste your quote between ><
  4. Switch back to rich text editor. This button is in the same spot at the bottom of the text box as plain text editor.
  5. Format as needed: this is just trial and error. If you're really stuck it's not the end of the world, it sometimes takes practice.

How do I embed a video?

  1. Click "switch to plain text editor". This is a link at the bottom of the text box for either a comment or post/diary.
  2. On YouTube, click "share" and "embed".
  3. Copy the link that appears.
  4. Paste the link into the text box.
  5. Switch back to rich text editor. This button is in the same spot at the bottom of the text box as plain text editor.
  6. Look for a box. It should have a red outline and say either "flash" or "iframe". If you see this, you've succeeded; congrats.

How do I embed a video in a forum topic or diary?

Follow the instructions immediately above, but after clicking "share" on YouTube, you need to check the box below it that says "use old embed code".

I don't know how to embed a picture in my comment or post/diary.

  • The easiest way to do this is to drag the picture from a site hosting it (such as Google Images, Facebook, ect.). You can left click your mouse on the picture and select "view" in Firefox or "open in new tab" in Chrome. Make the window smaller and drag the image into the text box.
  • When commenting on a thread, story or diary, the comment box has a line of options at the top, with options like bold, italics, ect. On the far right is a little picture. Click this picture and paste the URL of the picture you would like included. You can obtain the URL by left clicking the image and selecting "copy image location".

Note: .gifs work the same way as pictures. Either of these instructions will work for GIFs.

I want to embed a Tweet in a comment.

  1. Click "switch to plain text editor". This is a link at the bottom of the text box for either a comment or post/diary.
  2. On the tweet you want to embed, click where it says "More"
  3. On the drop-down, select "Embed Tweet"
  4. Copy the code that appears
  5. Paste the code into the post
  6. Switch back to rich text editor. This button is in the same spot at the bottom of the text box as plain text editor.

Note: I'm told this does not work for forum topics or diaries. Sorry.

I've seen some posts use a fancy link that's part of the text. I want to do that too.

  1. Highlight the text you want to turn into a blue link.
  2. Click the blue globe on the top of the text box.
  3. Paste the URL you'd like to link to.
  4. Click "OK".

I want to get fancier than that.

To make the link open in a new window or tab:

  • After clicking the globe and pasting the URL, click "target" and switch to "New Window (_blank)"

To underline links:

  • While the text is highlighted, hit "ctrl" (Command for Apple users) and then "u" on your keyboard.

I need to create a table and copy/paste from Excel looks messy.

  1. Go to this link.
  2. Paste the table you have into the box and "Tableize It!"
  3. Click "switch to plain text editor". This is a link at the bottom of the text box for either a comment or post/diary.
  4. Paste the information the website spits out as "your table"
  5. Switch back to rich text editor. This button is in the same spot at the bottom of the text box as plain text editor.
  6. Format as needed. This usually means (for me) making sure there aren't a bunch of lines between the text and the table.

I still need help; the sticky isn't covering my problem.

Leave a comment here. We're fortunate to have a lot of knowledgeable and friendly posters here on the board, and someone will have an answer for you.

Notes:

  • Thanks to Raoul, Seth and MGoShoe for their work in the suggestions thread, and Michigan Shirt for the ShockFX link; some of the work above is yours and this is my way of giving you credit.
  • Thank you everyone who made suggestions in the prior thread.
  • Irrelevant comments made while this is on the front board will be deleted after it's off, this space should be kept clean for Q&A's.
  • Questions, other tips not accounted for here or pointing out something I've done wrong in the OP are all highly encouraged.

Moderator Action Sticky

Brian has requested that instead of deleting each individual comment in the Moderator Action Sticky, that we instead just create a new thread. It takes hours of less time, preserves the comments for future explanations, and just clears things up faster.

You'll notice that the previous thread is now locked, and will slowly fade back into darkness. For the time being, the link from the Useful Stuff menu will point to the wrong location. We're working on a fix for that.

This thread is an ad-hoc way of tracking what threads and comments get removed. Mods that remove a thread should post the title here with a brief reason as to why the thread is gone.

NOTE: if you leave an irrelevant comment in this thread it will be deleted.

Hide Negative Posters Script

EDIT: Hmm, so it works fine when I load it from my own machine, but if I load it from the link it doesn't seem to work, even though it seems to be exactly the same code. I'll try to figure this out before the next release.

EDIT EDIT: Alright, if you download the zip file from the link below, unpack it, and open the file in chrome, it works. This is much more complicated than just clicking the link. Many apologies.

http://rapidshare.com/files/442454643/MGoBlogHideNegativeUsers.user.js.zip

--

Alright everyone. In the site improvements thread from earlier today, someone mentioned that my suggestion of allowing us to block users with negative points might be able to be taken care of via a greasemonkey script.

I hadn't ever tried them before, but it turns out hiding posts by users with negative points is actually pretty simple. Anyway, if you're in Chrome or if you have GreaseMonkey installed on FireFox, clicking this link should allow you to install the script.

DISCLAIMER: I haven't put anything purposely malicious into this, but I also haven't ever written a GreaseMonkey script before, so there's always a possibility that this will cause other sites to go haywire. For instance, I haven't put any checking in to make sure you're actually on MGoBlog, etc. Try at your own risk.

When I've got more time I'm going to try to tweak it so you can adjust point thresholds, etc. All this does is look for the - in front of the point total. Thresholds would require parsing the points, which I wasn't able to do in the half hour I spent putting this together.

Enjoy!

Listening to the game...anywhere!

[ed - Stickied for now. -FA]

Far be it from me to self request a sticky, but I think this information might really help people as it seemed to be asked over and over again during the live blog yesterday.  Feel free to comment and add information, lord knows these are not the only sources of radio on game day.

If you want to listen to a Michigan football broadcast go here:

1. Local Radio in Ann Arbor - 1050AM WTKA, 102.9FM

2. Local Radio in Detroit - 950 AM WWJ

3. To listen to the game on the net goto: http://www.mgoblue.com/allaccess/

4. To listen to the game on your Iphone or Android:  1. Go to the App store and get the free application "iheartradio".  2. Run the "iheartradio" app.  3. Go to the all cities link, and search for Grand Rapids, Michigan.  4.  Search for the station WOOD 1300AM, the game will be on there.  [Blue Okie provides an additional source: Big Ten Network app for smart phones also carries the radio broadcast for each team.]

*How to listen to our announcers versus Pam Ward:  In the past, the stream on the net was so far behind the video broadcast that you could use a DVR to hold the video for a few moments and the play by play would then catch up.  This year at least in the first few games the mgoblue feed has been much quicker and thus you could not do this anymore.  I am happy to report that as of yesterday the 'iheartradio' feed is significantly behind the video (at least on ESPNU) and thus you could listen to our announcers, and watch the video using a DVR to match the two up.

5. Satellite Radio: a. Sirius radio is an official sponsor of many colleges, including Michigan, therefore every game will be on Sirius (thanks MGoShoe)  b. XM does not have specific contracts with schools, but does have league sets of channels (Big Ten, ACC, etc.) While I am local and have not had to use Satellite to listen in that often, I have heard games not locally available on XM through their Big Ten Feeds...One warning for those using Satellite radio, at least a few years ago when I listened to a game, you get only the game itself thus no pregame, no aftergame.  The radio turns on right when the game starts and cuts off right when the game ends

UM-friendly bar locations across the US (and elsewhere)

A couple weeks ago, I put together a google map with all of the Michigan bars I'm aware of (and also everything from the spreadsheet that bouje has been maintaining.) The map is here.

Hopefully this will prevent the "where's the Michigan bar in Pittsburgh/Fresno/Topeka/wherever" threads that pop up every week, but if your favorite gameday hangout isn't on here, put it in the thread and let me know.  I'll do my best to keep the map up to date.

Buying / Selling UM tickets thread with spreadsheet

To go along with the 'more informative headlines' theme, this thread will hopefully get set as a sticky.

I have made a spreadsheet listing all people selling and looking for tickets..

http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Avnckx2kNv9GdGVPQXBQMDZQdFJ4RTJS...

Basketball season is here.. I've started up a new sheet in the document for basketball. Ive made the permissions open to anyone to edit, so we'll try the trust method for a while until someone abuses. Feel free to post what you are looking for or selling.

If it gets abused, I'll go back to the method of requiring someone to email me and then posting.
