WTKA Roundtable 8/18/16: Backups are Good
[Bryan Fuller]
Sam, Brian, and Craig are gone, but the MGoBlog Roundtable's second string of Bruce Madej, Ace Anbender, and Ira Weintraub would start for just about any other Big Ten radio roundtable. Things they discuss:
-
Another second unit that would start for just about any Big Ten program
-
Fullbacks! Don't forget about Hirsch
-
Chris Evans hype that only makes sense if it's real
-
Bo Schembechler believed you shouldn't be allowed to write about football if you don't understand all the subtle and sublime intricacies of offensive line play
-
A different take on Happy Gilmore
-
Iowa fans still hate Ed
You can catch the entire episode on Michigan Insider's podcast stream on Audioboom, which includes John U. Bacon's show, the new Spath show, and more.

I was not buying the JBB hype at LT either. I missed the FB piece on Hirsch. What did they say?

I swear I thought the bullet about Bo was going to end with "until you've beaten MSU and OSU." I clearly need a break from this blog.

You shouldn't take a break from this blog until we beat MSU or OSU.

a "Chris Evans" type of guy hype, Freddy Canteen. I'll buy into it when I see him In the game and producing. Sorry to be the downer here.

I think its possible that he could contribute, but will not be a world beater as a Freshman.

Can Gordon was the original, at least in the blog era. Nate Brink had a big year of it too.

IIRC, it was Hoke and exactly nobody else who pumped up Brink.
August 21st, 2016 at 7:53 PM ^
People were asking about Big Will Campbell, and he brought up Nathan Brink, saying Brink had been very violent in practice. My lingering doubts about Hoke ratcheted up significantly after that.

well hoke praised Ryan Glasgow too, to everyone's disbelief

Greg Mattison was gushing about Nathan Brink. GM is also prescient.
“I hate to talk about a young man because, when I do, he goes down the tubes. But, this guy has come out every day as tough as he possibly can,” Mattison said Tuesday at his weekly news conference. “Michigan people are going to be happy about him.
“He shows that want-to, that toughness, and that’s what we want. What we need is 11 guys playing with the attitude he’s shown.”

That's MGoBlog for you—careening wildly from completely irrational optimistic lunacy to dark depressive unjustified pessimism and all points in between and back again, ad infinitum.

Got excited thinking this was new... Then I realized I heard this days ago on the wtka podcast. This months preseason binging has grinded to a halt over the weekend.

Canteen got a few nice compliments in the spring about his route running. That is nothing compared to Evans being called out by coaches, players, and onlookers as being "explosive," "I can't describe it," and "he was ready from day 1."
There is not one running back on this roster that got any practice hype. Not Smith, not Isaac, not Higdon, not Drake, and certainly not either of the other freshman RBs. I think this hype is real.
And its not that Evans would be a "gadget player" as they are talking about in the roundtable. He would be an all-purpose back. He could play in 3rd down situations and when we want to speed up the tempo. I think he could get the 2nd most snaps at RB this year. I'm not saying he will, be its certainly possible. Its not like Isaac or anyone else behind Smith has ever set the world on fire.

While I agree that the Evans hype seems more believable than Canteens and see him contributing as a freshmen, I think you are overestimating him at least for this year. He is undersized to be a every down back. Especially in a Harbaugh offense that prefers a bruising back who can pass block effectively. Chris Evans is slot WR or DB sized at 186. He won't be asked to block blitzing LB and free DEs. He'll get Peppers type snaps, and line up in the slot or H back type positions, catching swing passes, screens and maybe some jet sweeps. Isaac and Drake will both get more touches though.

Kugler was suppose to challenge for Center last season and thought he would develop into a good Center. I would like to keep Cole at LT but he may be our best option at Center.

Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail.
