WTKA Roundtable 4/13/2017: Et Tu, BC?

Things discussed:

  • Berenson remembered. Wish time didn’t happen; now it’s time to appreciate all that Red gave us, including the best damn hockey ever, Old Yost, and all the Comries.
  • Options for next guy—it doesn’t seem like the replacement has been decided, and it seems it’s not Mel anymore. Was it until recently? Yeah? Why not Babcock? Some convincing reasons, including Zach Hyman.
  • Miles Bridges stays at State…um…okay…gotta stick around for that Izzo bump I guess. DJ and Moe probably want to go to the NBA Draft but if 24th overall is the ceiling they should probably return.
  • Euphemisms that don’t need explaining explained.
  • Spring Game: position battles we’re watching.
  • OL: Big Mike O gonna be good. If Ruiz isn’t pummeled by the starting DL, pencil him in as a 4-year starter.

Oh god, around the 6 minute mark, I knew exactly what Brian was going to say when he started reminiscing about the MSU hockey rivalry.. I was a wee lad of maybe seven years of age at that 1-0 loss and came away knowing for sure Ryan Miller was a robot. It felt a little better to see him become the best American goaltender in years for the Olympic teams.

Ugh, that game, I remember it vividly. The first period overlapped with the Northwestern football game (yes, THAT Northwestern game) and I was listening on a pocket radio trying to explain the end to everyone around me while that hockey game happened. It was my first year with student tickets and I already knew that game was incredibly offensive. Not a fun night.

That there seems to have been very little work done in the background on potential hockey coaches. there should have been a short list developed already. One that wasn't based primarily promoting either of the current asst coaches.

This strikes me as complaining just to complain. The absence of solid reporting on the search does not mean that there is little background done (Warde has already hired a hockey coach, for UConn, he knows what's involved and has a lot of knowledge on some of these guys). There may well have been a short list that is being worked, though that is hardly necessary.

The fact is, this is not something that needs a lot of speed. Unlike the football search, which was heavily scrutinized and started late due to the existing employment of the #1 candidate, the hockey program isn't going to suffer if this takes a couple of weeks.

To me, the only takeaway from the length of time already past is that Mel Pearson was not a sure thing, because if he were he would be here already. That doesn't mean it won't be Mel, but the AD appears to be executing a process that is satisfyingly thorough.

If we continue to recruit the top guys, we need to not only accept - but encourage the idea - that most of our best recruits will be 3 years and on to the NFL.

That's how Alabama and OSU do it, and we need to get to that level.
