MGoPodcast 4.4: Origami Pants

Topics!

WHAT WAS THAT? It warn't good'n, I tell ya.

DEBACLE COUNT. It's really high.  What's going on, man.

ZOMBIE ACE IS ZOMBIE ACE. I but he does bring up the Vincent Smith halfback pass call.

LLOYDBALL. I take it all back, Lloydball.

PAPER RUSTLING. Record. Record paper rustling.

DEFENSE! That was pretty awesome. Maybe ND can't move the ball that well but any way you slice it it's encouraging.

DOES QUINTON WASHINGTON HAVE ARMS? I say yes. Ace says no.

DEFENSIVE LINE DOING THINGS. Linebackers moving as a result.

HEIKO SLEEPING IN THE BACKSEAT. Where you at, Heiko?

TALKIN' BIG TEN WITH JAMIEMAC. He still won't concede Purdue as the favorite in whatever the other division is. Also discussion of the Illinois loss to Louisiana Tech descends into manic laughter.

SONGS.  "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life," Monty Python. "Panic," The Smiths. I must have used this before but Google didn't think I did. Surely I must have though. Surely.

It seems like they are using Bolden at MIKE on obvious run down.  I can remember couple times Demens coming in on possible passing downs because he is pretty good in pass coverage.

I don't think anyone expects Denard to "execute like Peyton Manning." But it would be nice if he could at least be Michael Vick.

I'd like to see Denard do well in the NFL as a QB. I know that's probably not going to happen, but man, I can hope can't I? I just want Denard to get better. I still love Denard.

I know people were cracking on Brian last week about pronouncing names wrong. I'm five minutes in and I've already caught a Maycock and a Tio.

Makes the podcast even more entertaining.

Thanks for distracting me from work!

It seems like in all this chaos, everyone completely forgot how Denard closed out the Big Ten season last year.  The Denard/Borges thing has shredded several strong defenses.  It's not like it is completely worthless.  Also, it's not like the Denard/RR offense didn't have its share of debacles. Maybe Denard is just not good under heavy pressure.

I think the hope was that Borges throughout last year learned what he could and couldn't do with Denard and ended the season on a high note (not inluding VT) with great games against OSU and Nebraska.

With that ending and another full offseason together I am sure people expected the offense to perform as well as it did in those games, especially with most of the offense returning.

So after Brian's rant on Borges debacles, I went through and review the play calls by down and distance.  It turned out that Michigan really sucked on 1st down in the first half.  They had 9 1st down runs for 25 yards -- 2.8 YPC with a long of 8.  This really put them behind the down and distance so they had to throw the ball (an average of 9.4 yards to go on non-1st down throws).  They were 2/7 for 21 yards and 3 INTs on 1st down.  1 was the Hail Mary another was the HB pass.  In Football Outsider terms they were successful on 4/16 1st downs.

In the second half the offensive line started playing better.  They had 8 rushs for 55 yards -- 6.9 YPC with a long of 31.  First down passing improved as well (though it was hard to get much worse) 3/4 for 38 yards.  In FO terms they were successful on 7/12 1st downs.

Maybe they could have run it a little more often on first down in the first half, but it isn't like they were tearing up the field running the ball on 1st down either.

seriously dude. you are like a freaking 2 year old. people talking 'shit' about denard? he turned it over 5 times. what do you expect people to say? listening to these 2 assclowns is like a broken record.

also, you get on everyone for talking about denard but then you call the wr's 'total crap'? you are a total hypocrite. talk about denard not even giving gardner a shot to catch the ball inbounds on a CB 4 inches shorter and then getting him injured in the process. hypocrite.

I've been a reader for a long time (since 2007) and I have to admit that hearing Brian pin the blame on seemingly one person in every crisis (this time Borges) gets extremely tiring. Denard is a singular talent, yes, but he's never been a threat to beat anyone with his arm and when we play any above-average defense he struggles mightily since we have no one else to help carry the load on a consistent basis. Maybe it's not that someone seems to undermine Denard in every loss. Maybe it's that defenses for the past three years haven't had to guess how to stop Michigan--contain Denard on the edges and force him into obvious passing situations where they can then tee off on him.

The biggest tragedy of Denard's career isn't the coaches, it's been the lack of balance and the absence of a secondary threat (Fitz hasn't gotten there yet IMO)

It may be true that Denard doesn't have a supporting cast (no deep threat WR, no dominant RB) like an Alabama does, but it doesn't mean the coaches aren't misuing him.  Michigan came out throwing the ball in this game, and that's a mistake when you have the best running QB in the country.

Same thing in MSU last year.  They came out throwing the ball, in an extremely windy day, with the best running QB in the country. 9 of 24 passing.
