CC: Tonight's SF opponent and planetary alignment

Submitted by Moonlight Graham on

Keeping the CC: Harbaugh barrage going, but trying to find different angles of topics to discuss. This one's sort of a hpothetical/what-if with a dose of paranoia. My previous OP was accused of being paranoia about Les Miles but most commenters disagreed. But I'm telling you up front with this one: It's paranoia.

We've been discussing how the planets have been aligning for IT to HAPPEN: Coach Harbaugh on the outs with the 49ers, Brandon and Hoke crashing and burning, JH's NFL options looking less than clear-cut, with the only stay-in-California option being the wacky and woeful Raiders.

Another huge planet that has gotten in line this season is one that has been making me nervous throughout this CC, and no one has been talking about them: The 49ers' opponent this evening, the San Diego Chargers, and the fact that they do NOT appear to be in the mix of NFL coaching options.

I believe we should feel fortunate that this franchise is doing reasonably well, but it appears that their chances of making the playoffs are less than 50%, depending on how things shake out between the Ravens and Steelers. I'm not sure if SD completely controls its own destiny but they do have an opportinity to finish a strong 10-6. JH still has family there, coached and played there, and they have a good team ... but their above-par performance this season under Mike McCoy has kept them out of any CC discussion. Even the most expansive "coaches on the hot seat" lists don't mention McCoy, although there seems to be a lot of over-arching pressure on Rivers to join his draft classmates Eli and Big Ben as, at very least, a Super Bowl participant.

It seems unlikely that the Chargers would want to swap out McCoy, especially at such a high price of draft picks and the purported contract dollars being thrown around. They don't seem like big spenders and haven't been the big-coaching-splash types. Having said that, I'm rooting for them to make the playoffs (which may, coincidentally, require John Harbaugh's team to factor into the playoff implications) and remain completely off the radar from being a last-minute entrant in the sweepstakes.

Cue cats, monkeys, and cat-monkey rodeos.

All but the Bears have owners who will not give up total control no matter what they say.  The Raiders and Jets are awful now and the Falcons and Bears are both in steep declines because of aging rosters.

There aren't any really good NFL jobs open this year that will pay big dollars and give a guy like Harbaugh control.

Carolina may have an opening, but they won't pay top dollar and Gettleman is firmly in place as their GM.

Had the Houston job opened this year instead of last year that would have been an attractive job for Harbaugh.  As would Dallas, but Jones isn't going to fire Garrett.

San Fran wins...

Harbaugh announces to the team that he's leaving after the game...

It breaks on MGoBlog at 1am EST (game is at 8:30pm)...

Harbaugh takes the night and is recruiting by Monday...

All the "2014" crap goes away... (even though getting Harbaugh doesn't erase losing McGary, losing Horford, and most of the teams we care about sucking right now...and the Morris/Minny debacle in my mind...at least not yet, win a NC, and heck yea it does)

But would we break MGoBlog? A 1am announcement isn't going to get the same traffic and it might just be a heavy stream of people all night and all Sunday morning.

Regardless. It's happening.

I live in San Diego...we LOVE Mike McCoy. We are very understanding if the Bolts fail to make the playoffs this year. Rivers has gone through 4 (or is it 5 now?) different Centers due to seaon-ending injuries. The Chargers have gone through three Running Backs due to injuries as well. On all sides of the ball, the Chargers have fought to remain competitive in spite of injuries which have stretched them a little beyond their capabilities. Still, they're just a step or two from being up there with the Broncos and Patriots (played both extremely competitively).

That....and the Spanos family is incredibly cheap and have a young, dynamic GM who will not cede authority to a coach. We had Norv Turner as head coach for what seems like forever. He was replaced with a coordinator who is turning things around. There is literally no way they get into a bidding war for Harbaugh.

Like Jaysin1414said above......Rivers has went to a whole new level under him. I follow NFL very very closely and this would be so shocking and totally against the style of ownership of the Chargers also.

Put it this way, I would say that it has right around the same shot of the Lions jumping in and grabbing Harbaugh after this season, nearly zero.

Not so much paranoia as it is lack of familiarity with the Chargers. Mike McCoy is in no way in jeopardy of losing his job. Rivers has enjoyed a rejuvenated career since McCoy left Denver to take the SD HC job. McCoy shared shared some of Manning's ritual and preparation and is also credited with being the only OC to completely successfully alter his scheme because of a particular players strengths/short comings. Tebow. McCoy also has the full support of the GM. It's the chargers defense and lack of true #1 WR
