Being Shane Morris is probably a lot of fun.

The Freep's Mick McCabe released his annual list of the top 25 high school players in the state; unsurprisingly, Shane "Pearly Whites" Morris sits atop the list. Notre Dame commit Steve Elmer, Michigan commit Jourdan Lewis, and MSU commits Jon Reschke and Gerald Holmes round out the top five; other Wolverine pledges include Wyatt Shallman (#7), David Dawson (#8), Khalid Hill (#12), and C'sonte York (#14). When remembering that this list is put together not to project college success but high school ability, I don't take much issue with how the rankings shook out.
In other rankings news, Scout's Allen Trieu compiled a top 150 for the entire Midwest region, topped by (sigh) Notre Dame commit Jaylon Smith and USC commit Ty Isaac. Morris slots in at #4—interestingly one spot behind uncommitted four-star WR James Quick—and eight Michigan pledges find a place in the top 30. Seventeen Wolverines in all made the list, each falling within the top 81; if you're looking for a surprise placement, it's probably Mike McCray down at #53, which is approaching three-star territory.

It is here. Tonight I'll be taking in Warren De La Salle (Morris) vs. Ann Arbor Pioneer before heading to Wayne State tomorrow for a quadruple-header with main attraction Cass Tech (errybody) vs. Brother Rice. A few Michigan commits kicked off their seasons last night; DeVeon Smith is the leader in the clubhouse for stat-line of the week with 17 carries for 311 yards and three touchdowns to lead Warren Howland over Lakeside, 43-16:
Smith will be a very interesting test case for valuing production against physical ability; he doesn't jump off the screen as a guy who's going to tear up the Big Ten with his athleticism, but 311 yards on 17 carries is impressive regardless of the level of competition. If nothing else, Smith has the knack for finding a hole and taking what the defense allows, often an underrated attribute when high school stars can get by on being bigger and faster than their competition.
shouldnt Shane's bar code and student ID be blacked out? I dont know what is kept in student files anymore but Im sure sparty is scheming up something to hack into his file and give him all E's.
are we going to be seeing more "after the jump" stuff?!?!?! I've just noticed that today's posts which normally wouldn't have that type of jumping around....are all containing jumps!
It's an easy way to get more content on the front page. And, with the season approaching, there will be more front page content.
Holmes should not be in the top 5. He doesn't have the high school production or the recruiting hype. What is his ranking based on then? At least Wyatt Shallman's team was a D-1 State Finalist last year. And no Dennis Finley or Kenton Gibbs in the top 25?
I submit the Detroit News' list from Tom Markowski for comparison:
1. Shane Morris
2. David Dawson
3. Steve Elmer
4. Wyatt Shallman
5. Jon Reschke
6. Cameron Dillard
7. Dennis Finley
8. Jourdan Lewis
9. Gerald Holmes
10. Khalid Hill
11. Riley Norman
12. Poet Thomas
13. Delano Hill
14. C'Sonte York
15. Josh Jones
The rankings to his Spartan slappy side when he would be a laughing stock to not have Shane up there, but slipping in Holmes so he can say "see, they both have 2 of the top 5" was his play.
I agree with you Ace, boy if that highight was the only one I'd seen of Smith I'd not even be sure he was a BCS talent. Luckily there are better highlights and the coaches evalutions to go on.
He's got a pretty wicked stiff-arm and his running style reminds me of Emmitt Smith.
a BCS level RB recruit would have done way better.
what a better way to start my weekend than see shane's smiling glow?
Anyone else have this image flash in their mind when looking at the picture of Shane?
God, I miss Calvin and Hobbes...
but deep in my subconcious it would have triggered that memory. Well done on the C&H's reference.
no. one million times no.
Two things that make me very happy!
LT wants to do all of his officials after the season ends... looks like he won't be making a decision until closer to signing day. Not a criticism, just an observation.
My guess is LT makes his choice at the Under Armor game and chooses Michigan
Just shows LT's character by making sure he takes his time to get the school he goes to right. Michigan has a so much to offer besdies football and Shane will be a huge pull to get him here in the end. I'd be pretty shocked if he didn't end up here.
I believe it's Alabama on top with ND running second for him and that 's it. His buddy Elijah Shumate(remember him?) is a '12 ND recruit and word from his friends around here is that Muhammad ha been all "Alabama this"and "Alabama that" when talking to them.
How can one not cheer for Shane Morris? Dude cracks me up. He is giving Gorgeous Al Borges a run for his money with that school ID/
