One QB from the 1920s, one from the 1960s, and the rest from the 1970s on.  I wish if they were going to do something like this, they would do more historical research.  I realize the first 2-3 decades it's difficult to get detailed information on players, but that should still leave more than just focusing on the recent past.

Yeah, Drew Henson who started for less than a full season (in a year when we went to the Citrus Bowl) seems like a real stretch, and a few other guys seem a little overrated.

Still, I get that a lot more somewhat recent guys are on the list because they're high on Michigan's all-time lists in many passing categories since we didn't pass it a whole lot under Bo and nobody passed a whole lot before that.

Ricky Leach is my favorite M player of all ttme

This list ranked him as the greatest M QB of all time

Therefore the list is perfect in every way possible and the author is obviously a brilliant historian.

He was a one man team with literally no support. What he did at Michigan was amazing with no talent around him. I would have put Harbaugh #1 instead of Leach due to his season that put us #2 overall. Where is Demetrius Brown? I would have put him ahead of Mike Taylor due to Rose Bowl win

The Harbaughffense requires a qb to check plays, read coverages, and make a multitude of decisions pre- and post-snap. What made Denard great was his ability to play with speed. He ran fast. He threw the ball hard. He had a quick release. Every decision you ask Denard to make slows him down, eliminating his best quality. He was great because he wasn't asked to play NFL football; he was asked to play fast. Harbaugh would find a role for Denard in the offense. I imagine it would look like having a full time Peppers on offense.

the lion share of these picks might make sense. But the list is hardly exclusive or all-inclusive, in part because the list fails to define the age or the game these quarterbacks were required to play to advance their teams and offense.

Comparing the Bo qbs and the Mo qbs and the Carr qbs isn't even fair when your making out the list unless you make the criteria about wins and leadership. Then you might have to alter the list by noting,  for example, by saying that the best qbs at Michigan were those who won under all circumstances.

Leach, Firedman, Taylor, Franklin and Harbaugh were qbs of the winningest Michigan teams in their time. Plus these guys played a lot. If you want to judge them by their team's winning percentage in the period they played regardless of their production from that position, that is appropriate. Griese was the best qb at Michigan if you only take in account winning a national championship. Unless you consider that Friedman was nearly perfect over his time at Michigan.

But in the end, even that isn't a fair yardstick, because in each case the player was in charge of a team that never had the same atrributes, wasn't always asked to carry the offensive workload of scoring efficiency, which is probably a more precise way of judging effectiveness because as noted qbs in the earlier decades weren't throwing the ball much if any.

This is about creating debate, however. And we all have our favorites. And the qb debate at Michigan is always heated, no more so than during the Carr era when his line of starting qbs all were massively productive and all had shots in the NFL.

I mean Collins, who isn't even listed, along with Grbac and Timberlake had better pro cereers than Henson who didn't even graduate from Michigan before leaving. Brady obviously is the greatest Michigan product to ever play in the NFL but Denard was perhaps the most exciting player to ever put on the Maize and Blue at his position with the ability to score on any play from anywhere on the field.

Been watching UM Football since 1979.

#1 Harbaugh: the 97 team was great but the greatest I've seen is Harbaugh's Fiesta Bowl Team, Bo & Jim did a number on Tom Osborne in the 2nd half.

#2 Griese: he won the AP and threw chairs at Scorekeepers

#3 Denard: simply amazing, a throwback Bo QB to the early 1970s

#4 Brady: for obvious reasons

#5 Ricky Leach: was the flagbearer for true UM fans during the Rodriguez years

Honorable Mention: Osterban, Chappius, Denny Franklin, Todd Collins, Henne

Alright, I know this is silly, but hate how Brady is shown in his Patriots gear. I get the fact that he became elite while in the NFL, but this list is about Michigan quarterbacks and his picture should of his being in Michigan gear.

I always state that the biggest game of Brady's career never happened in any of the SB's or AFC Championship games.  Not Alabama Orange Bowl.  Nope.  It was the State game in 98, a glorious late September game.  After early losses to ND and Syracuse, if they lost that game, TB12 goes to the bench and the Drew Henson era begins.  Played well and they won.

IF IF IF!  If LLLLOYD had known, the 2000 Bowl game would've been the National Championship game.

I still think Rudock after the first few games played better than any QB I've watched at Michigan so far. Admittedly I'm only 23 and have a small sample size, but that's my opinion.

I came of age as a Michigan fan in the mid 70's.  Anything better than hearing Ufer refer to Rick Leach as "the guts and glue of the Maize and Blue!"

Think of Dennis Franklin's record and the fact he never was able to play in a bowl game!

Denard is always going to be underrated.  However, he was the primary reason Michigan football remained relevant in the dark Rich Rod, Brady and DB years.

Did they just decide that Bob Chappuis was a halfback for the purposes of this list? He was a significant passer in the mad magician years and, you know, won stuff. I like Henne of course but I feel like he's too high.

Terrible article. They picked a guy #1 who couldnt throw the ball and always lost his last big game. And some of these low ranked guys had great arms and won many clutch games (Wangler, Brady, Elvis).

On his weekly appearance on WEEI (93.7 Sports Radio in Boston) Brady was asked if he's planning a repeat visit to AA while the Pats are in-town this week for the scrimmage with the Lions.  Said he hasn't received the schedule yet, but if he can, would like to make the trip over with some teammates.

EFF ELL EYE ENN TEE! Flint SW! Loved Ufer's description of Little Ricky Leach. Went to my HS. My Dad was Admistrator at SW. Loved/Love Leach Family. Known Rick since Cummings Elementary n Zimmerman Jr High. Beat Montana at ND. 3rd in Heisman. Hula MVP. #7! (speaking of 7, there should be no mention ever of anyone who throws seven interceptions versus MSU)
