Any transfer player ever as good as Jake Rudock?

Submitted by BIGBLUEWORLD on

Michigan has never been big on acquiring transfers. With that noted, has any transfer player ever come in for one year and made such a big contribution as Jake Rudock? Who were the best players to ever come to Michigan via transfer?

I know a few players who transferred OUT of Michigan and were pretty successful. Mallett, Rawls, Ryan Mundy. But for those who transferred in, I honestly can't say much jumps out at me, maybe Isaac if he develops. Michigan hasn't really ever been in the transfer business until Harbaugh got here.

Are you saying he actually was on Florida State or ND?  He didn't transfer he was kicked out and not accepted.  I bet both Bobby Bowden and Lou Holtz were less than pleased with the results.

He got better.  MUCH better.  But I think it's easy to forget when he first arrived he was anywhere but on the same wavelength as Chesson and was throwing a lot of picks (even if two were Perry's fault).  The coaches had to simplify the game to the point that defenses could key on the small part of the field he worked, which created its own problems.

For about half the season, excepting Northwestern when the team freakishly fired on all cylinders, Rudock's DSRs were 50, 63, 50, 50, 55.  Not the worst in the world, but very pedestrian.  Much of it wasn't his fault; he only had fall camp to absorb Harbaugh's playbook.  And holy hot damn, did he take off once he figured it out.

He may well be the best transfer for half a season, though.  He started out with a 5/6 TD/INT (against the likes of Oregon State, UNLV and Maryland no less) but over the last six games he was 15/3 against some of the toughest pass Ds we faced last season.

Well I looked it up and the answer is essentially yes. Smith's best year by far was 2012. Kaepernick got benched last year. The wild card is Luck...he had his worst season rating last year, though he was plagued by injury, so time will tell if he bounces back.

My best friend is a huge Iowa fan and I just don't understand where all the hate for Rudock comes from with their fanbase.  He has to be treated more poorly than John Navarre was (and I'll admit that I never really felt the love for Navarre since it seemed he could never make the big play to win a game).  If you stack up the numbers for Rudock verses CJ Beathard last year, Rudock had a better year.  All the Iowa fans would talk about was how great Beathard was compared to Rudock, but if you watched any of the games, CJ struggled with hitting the long pass and didn't have more than 2 check downs before getting rid of the ball.  If you're thinking to yourself "Man, that sounds alot like someone..." that's because it was the exact same thing with Jake at the beginning of the season.  I have said all along that I beleive Jake Rudock would have gone undefeated in the regular season at Iowa as well because the strength of the team was it's offensive line when rushing (I saw multiple plays where the line would be 5 yards downfield carrying blocks away from the lanes) and Defense against one of the weakest divisions in a Power 5 conference.  Beathard didn't have to beat anyone or carry the team in any way in their first 12 games.  I'd have to double check the stats, but I think they held multiple possession leads in the 4th quarter of every game except Wisc (in Iowa City).  I defy anyone who says Beathard was the difference at Iowa last year.  They went undefeated because they ran over people on offense and had a defense that was capable of containing some of the worst the B1G had to offer last year.  Rudock would of had just as much success at Iowa last season in my opinion, if not more.

I do think Rudock could have had a similar year as Beathard at Iowa, but what set him apart was the coaching of Harbaugh.  And yes, on almost every statistical category, Rudock had a better year last year than Beathard, and that is acknowledging that Rudock took awhile to fully learn the system and started out the season slowly.

I get that Iowa fans are excited about Beathard, but they don't seem to appreciate that they had one of the easiest schedules of any major conference team in college football.  I also find it amusing that some Iowa fans think Beathard should considered a realistic Heisman candidate.

Something I haven't seen on this blog is the difference in Rudock's throwing motion from the start of the year to the end. It was blatant enough even for someone like me to see. Beginning of the year, he was more hunched over. End of the year, very upright and over the top. Someone with more knowledge should take a look and break it down.

RDT = Roll Damn Tide - it was a whole MgoFiasco. One user had 2 accounts and the 2nd account he claimed to be an Alabama insider who also liked Michigan. He had all this great insight into recruiting...

He would create content, log in with his alter ego and give himself upvotes and things. It was childish and he got outed when he accidentally forgot to switch accounts and made a comment that was clearly meant to be made by his other user.

Hopefully I'm not being a douche-canoe and telling you all these things that you already know?

I'd like to thank the academy. . .

I was actually hoping for that to happen with my Tecmo Super Bowl avatar, though. . . I just watched the Doc Brown presser and thought his Jourdan Lewis impression was hilarious so I 'shopped it on a whim.

This was the first guy that popped into my head as well.  He was not as big a deal as Rudock (seeing as JR was the starting QB and all...) but he was a big contributor while he was here, including a 97 yard kickoff return against Indiana.

Sadly I read his wikipedia page and I guess he was arrested a few years back for allegedly selling stolen cars.

Really we don't have much history with incoming transfers, so there isn't much to pick from.

were significant contributors if not on Jake's level. I should look this up but I believe that HOF Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch played at Mich as well as Wisconsin but not sure of the sequence. Don't think he ended at Michigan.

edit- looked it up, from Wiki:

Hirsch played his first college season at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1942. His nickname was permanently affixed to him by Chicago Daily News sportswriter Francis J. Powers who, upon witnessing him play for the Badgers against the Great Lakes Naval Station in 1942, wrote "His crazy legs were gyrating in six different directions, all at the same time; he looked like a demented duck."[3]

His commitment to the V-12 Navy College Training Program program in United States Marine Corps required him to transfer to the University of Michigan. He played two intercollegiate football seasons for the Michigan Wolverines where during the 1943–44 year he earned the distinction of being the only athlete at the school to letter in four sports (football, basketballtrack and baseball) in a single year.[4] He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1974.

So here is a vote for Hirsch.

I was at ND that day. He caught a critical late pass and had the presence of mind to dive out of bounds because we were out of time outs. Reme Hamilton then hit the late field goal for a huge win.

It was especially sweet because we didn't play them in '95 or '96 so ND had to think about it for 3 years.

That always comes to mind when I think about him.

Speaking of last second games. In the same year when Colorado hit the Hail Mary, Todd Collins did not have the presence of mind to stay in bounds late in the game and stepped out of bounds to kill the clock. Colorado would not have had that last play.
