Zettel on the Radar?

I'd welcome him with open arms...

http://www.mlive.com/sports/bay-city/index.ssf/2011/12/anthony_zettels_p...

Fwiw, the article is based on conjecture, rumor, and speculation. I'm hoping we can file this one under the "where there is smoke, there is fire" category.

Here's the intra-conference transfer rule.

Not just that - it's based on what commenters on that blog said. I'd love to see this transfer, but this article is pretty stupid.

Welll, I don't think Michigan

Welll, I don't think Michigan can offer him a scholarship due to conference rules. If he wants to play for Michigan, he'd have to walk-on.

P.S. I thought he was an OL coming out of HS??

And a small one at 259.

By way of contrast, Brink is 263 and Wilkins is 280. RVB is 288 while Martin, Campbell, Washington and Ash are all over 300.

He'll be a very strong and athletic three technique. If Larry Johnson put Anthony there then I believe he'll be an excellent DT.

He's also a freshman.  He'll probably put on 15-20 lbs. by the time he's a sophomore, meaning he'll be 275 or 280.  Since most freshman defensive linemen redshirt, he'll probably be right on track.

It's possible that, since the

It's possible that, since the Big 10 and NCAA are investigating Penn State, players who decide to transfer out will not be penalized of a scholarship, a la USC. If that were the case, then Zettel (who was a DT? I'm not sure) would be an AMAZING addition to next year's team.

I hope they allow that.  For that matter, I don't think there's a great justification for the "no intraconference transfer" rule in the first place.  If a kid wants to transfer to a school that happens to be in the same conference, why can't he?

It's a good rule, normally.

It's a good rule, normally. It's like a "no competition" clause in a contract. Schools don't almost always let players who aren't happy with their situation go, but they don't want them going to their rivals schools, where they'll play against them. In a normal situation, a coach will "ok" a transfer, but NOT if it's in-sonference. The Big Ten just put it writing. It really is a sensible rule, you just don't normally anticipate a program running into a disaster like Penn State's.

That's looking at it from the

That's looking at it from the schools' perspective.  From the kids' perspective, it seems pretty unfair.  If you're from the Midwest, this rule basically prevents you from transferring to any BCS school remotely near your home.  Players should have the right to transfer where they want.  If that means playing against their old school, so what?

Actually, you can EASILY

Actually, you can EASILY transfer close to home...just not to a team in the same conference. There's nothing to stop Zettel from transfering to Central Michigan and WAILING on MAC QBs for a few years. Or you can go to a JUCO, and then come out and play for any school you want (ususally...I don't think the Big Ten rukes prevent that, but most conferences don't- e.g., Cam Newton).

And yes, it's geared towards the schools, but there's a reason for that. The Conference needs to maintain its collegiality (ergo- recruiting battles need to end, not be ongoing), anc schools have to have assurances that the kids they are training and educating at their own expense don't turn around and play for the competition. Ina NORMAL year, how would it be fair to pay for a year of Zettel's tuition just to have him leave for a better situation and play against them for three years?

Again, it comes down to the fact that there has to be reciprocity in these relationships. Once a LOI is signed, a (Big Ten) school can't cut them just because they don't pan out as well as the next big thing (without cause). These kids can't just wander from school to school looking for the best "situation." Both sides have to give some respect to their committments. It's expected that if Zettel wanted to play for Michigan, close to his family, he would have signed . In an average year, he can't just change his mind because he feels like it, or because he isn't getting enough playing time.

In a NORMAL year, how would it be fair to pay for a year of Zettel's tuition just to have him leave for a better situation and play against them for three years?

What is unfair about that? During the year we'd be paying his tuition, we'd have his services on the team. The other three years we wouldn't.

Players should have the right to go to school where they want to. If it's OK for a kid like that to transfer to another conference's schools, it should be OK to transfer to one in the same conference.

Reason #1

Coaches who are releasing a player from scholarship can limit where the player is allowed to transfer.  The BIG just stepped in to allow coaches the freedom to avoid looking like jerks.  If a player wants to go to another BIG school they can as long as they are willing to pay their own way.

Can he get a 'ship?

I read on a different site that players transferring within the big10 can not get a new scholarship. But instead must be a walk-on thru the rest of their career. Is this true or should I have ignored that incorrect info?

It's been true in the past

It's been true in the past (as recently as Boren), but there was some talk a few days ago that the rule was repealed. Until I see something credible otherwise, I'd just assume that's the case.

Edit: assume that the rule is still in place, that was a piss poor sentence, my bad.

Did you actually read the

Did you actually read the article? Or just the headline? Basically the author went to another michigan blog where some guy from the same high school as zettel says: "hey wouldnt it be great if..." and everyone else goes: "yea I hope he's rich since he'd have to pay his way..." I wouldnt exatly say the rumor has legs.

Just like Boren Zettel would have to be a walk on the rest of his career.

I wouldnt say he has to be rich.  I thought all in-staters pay a different tuition rate.  When I went to school, the line was the outstaters pay for the in staters tuition.

Considering instate tuition

Considering instate tuition and the cost of housing/food, I would think it has to be $80,000 for 4 years for an instate kid.

Wow...nothing but bald-face

Wow...nothing but bald-face speculation here. If you want facts, move along people. If you wnat to engage in speculation: I guess if Hoke want's him. D-Line depth is an issue for us. On the other hand, he would have to sit out for a year, so would it really be that big a boon?

Personally, I'm still miffed he chose Penn State in the first place.

Does raise the question

if there are significant sanctions against  PSU by the B1G, would they relax the 'can't transfer to another conference school' rule. Would be nice to see,  but I wouldn't hold my breath.

This is pretty much an article about nothing - it "quotes" a few blog posters.  There must be a better way for these guys to come up with something to write about.

Wonder if the hiring of the Miss St

coach would be enough to sway him to stay?

Well...again, I don't think there's any information, to date, that he's considering leaving. Don't get me wrong, if I were a Penn State player with eligibility left (or just a commit) I'd be scrambling to get as far from State College as I could, but I think it's premature to assume he's doing so without one scrap of credible evidence.

Mullen

Well, Mullen is an offensive coach, so I don't know how big a deal that would be for Zettel.

Clarification

When I said "big deal," I meant in terms of luring him to stay. If they hire Mullen, the focus might change one of the best defenses in the country and that might compel Zettel to seek other options. Obviously, the coach is going to make a difference. This is pure speculation though.

I would think it's less about

I would think it's less about Mullen's expertise than how Zettel connects with him, and with the defensive coaches he brings with him.

hmmm

Whilst I consider most of the commenters on my blog to be highly knowledgable people...I doubt there is much going on here. Michigan is full at DE unless Mario Edwards or Noah Spence randomly come calling. When you have this few spaces left in a class you only take positions of need or absolute studs, unfortunately Zettel does not fill either of these requirements, plus there would be the issue of him transferring within the Big10.

If he was only able to

If he was only able to transfer under normal B1G rules though he would be considered a walk on and not count against the 85 player limit.

Actually, Zettel was

Actually, Zettel was considered a substantial stud last year, at D-Line and O-Line, and arguably our biggest miss. I don't know that making room for a 2012 stud would be that much more sensible that getting one who has a year of additional experience, unless his quality is perceived to have diminished.

Considering Michigan's biggest issues are depth at O-Line or D-Line, I doubt this would be an inconceivable prosepct from the coaches position, unless they personally don't think much of Zettel's play, or transfer rules prevent it (which I imagine is just as likely).

Personally...

I didn't consider him a stud recruit, to me, that's a five star guy. Zettel was a good prospect, it only seemed like a great loss because he was an in-state guy who we appeared to be 'in' on. Wind back the clocks a year, and we were desperate to keep hold of any in state talent, which is why Zettel to Penn St hurt at the time. Fortunately now we are in a better position, and currently own in state recruiting.

Anthony

I went to High School and played football with Anthony, and grew up with his whole family. I was disappointed when he went to Penn State but talked to him and his family since this whole scandal has gone down. He said that he would only think about transfering if he didn't like Penn State's head coach and the only place he is thinking about transfering to would be Michigan. He redshirted this year (behind Devin Still) and is a DT. He said he didnt want to go  to State because of how hostile they were all being. He would be a huge pick up for us.

Yes. It's meant to prevent

Yes. It's meant to prevent players from switching schools like nomads. Unless you go to a JUCO, you have to sit out a year no matter what, and lose some eligibility.

I think they are going to

I think they are going to have to make a deal for the PSU kids so they can get out. I still think this is going to blow up so bad that Joe and anyone else will get destroyed and there is no way these kids should have to deal with this mess.

Given the Increbible Horror

Of (1) the Sandusky situation which under no circumstances will evolve into a better environment at PSU and (2) what we expect to unfold with the coverup extending more than a decade, one would think that the NCAA would allow any player on the team to transfer anywhere without any loss of eligibility.

The impact on the kids who were violated by Sandusky is difficult to fathom.  To a much lesser extent, and by no means do I attempt to compare the circumstances, the players must be in an incredibly uncomfortable position.  Who would want to focus on football when the media circus will camp out in Happy Valley for the next several years?

It doesn't matter who the new coach will be, but the Sandusky criminal proceedings and coverup investigation are not going away for a long time.  That is just a really bad environment to spend one's college years in.

All transfers should be

All transfers should be allowed without sitting out a year, even between two Big Ten teams, when a head coaching change takes place.  Recruiting battles are conducted by coaching staffs and if one is replaced you can hardly say that a transfer indicates an "ongoing" courtship.
