Zettel Announces Tonight
Saw this on the Sparty board, but not over here yet. If it's already been posted, I apologize, but I didn't see it.

Usually but I have a bad feeling on this one.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:17 AM ^
This is NOT good for us. Why? I will tell you.
If we are choosing M, with all of the coaching uncertainty, why make the announcement now when he has said a few times that he would be announcing in January?
This is even more so since the uncertaintly around M is likely to be cleared up within a week or so. If the kid were inclined to pick M, wouldn't he wait the few remaining days to see who he might be playing for?
December 28th, 2010 at 11:30 AM ^
he's decided he wants Michigan regardless of who's the coach or he's decided on somewhere else and the coaching situation is irrelevant. Anything beyond that is speculation -- I'd be shocked if he had inside information on DB's decision.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:40 AM ^
As you noted, either he has decided that he wants Michigan regardless OR he has decided he is going somewhere else, so our CC issue is irrelevant. I guess to me logic dictates the latter. If he were inclined towards Michigan, wouldn't it make sense for him to wait to see who the coach is going to be?

You're making quite a leap there. It's very possible that, since he grew up a UM fan and has been to the campus a number of times, has decided that he wants to play football at UM, no matter the coach. Zettel knows that M's coach next fall will either be JH or RR, and it's very possible that he's decided that he would like to play for either of them. Maybe he's done some research on JH's defensive staff (DC of the year) and thinks that he will like that just as much as playing for RR and his staff.
Maybe he's realized that the chance of any of the schools he's considering having a coaching change over the next four years is pretty high, so he should pick the school and program he likes the best. M has led for him the whole way, if he was worried about our coach, he's wait a week. This tells me he's not, and I can't imagine he goes from "M leads" to "no matter who M's coach is, they're out."

agree with your logic, but RR's been on fire in recruiting lately. Maybe it dawned on Zettel that if MSU can have their best season in 50 years and still get shut out of the BCS, it's just not easy being green. Not confident or anything, but who knows what the early decision means.

I guess it's true.
EDIT: Beat me to it.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:29 AM ^
Kurelic wrote both articles, so it's not necessarily any more true by there being two "sources"...
December 28th, 2010 at 10:23 AM ^
Michigan is going to stomp the yard on MSU in the bowl game. I'm thinking he wants to be a part of it!!!
Zettel...Go freaking Blue!!!
Tom, any merit to this?
December 28th, 2010 at 10:24 AM ^
I'm hopeful; it's been a good week.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:29 AM ^
How do you neg bang her?
December 28th, 2010 at 10:31 AM ^
well, step 1:
You cut a hole in a box.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:54 AM ^
Step 3: Have her open the box.....
December 28th, 2010 at 1:04 PM ^
Step 4: ... PROFIT!!!
December 28th, 2010 at 10:24 AM ^
I have a horrible feeling about this one, sports fans.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:26 AM ^
Any announcement before the coaching situation is decided...
December 28th, 2010 at 11:51 AM ^
December 28th, 2010 at 1:29 PM ^
And then we proceeded to get three commits since.
I think I'll just sit back and not let myself get too worked up about this one.......
December 28th, 2010 at 10:26 AM ^
Just curious. You seem like a pessimist when it comes to recruiting. Is that accurate?
December 28th, 2010 at 10:28 AM ^
Can't tell if sarcasm.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:29 AM ^
Legit curiousity.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:39 AM ^
I don't think that is really true normally. This year is a special case due to the CC. It is weighing heavy in the recruits minds, IME. If it were a LC to JH transition I don't think it would be as big deal, but this is a possible complete overhaul (again) of offensive strategy and definite complete overhaul of defensive leadership (IME). I don't see how that can't make recruits think twice in all honesty, but I guess some people really enjoy uncertainty and instability in their lives. It's not for me, but I am a creature of habit.
December 28th, 2010 at 12:12 PM ^
Wouldn't a complete overhaul of the defensive leadership be a good thing?
December 28th, 2010 at 12:57 PM ^
Not if you are a defensive recruit who is being recruited by the old guard...
December 28th, 2010 at 10:27 AM ^
I hear ya. I wish he'd wait a week. I don't feel good that he doesn't need to know if RR is coming back all of a sudden.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:28 AM ^
I don't like the timing of this either. I think he is going somewhere else based on the fact that the coaching situation hasn't been resolved and he is making his decision.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:29 AM ^
I believe this will be our finest hour.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:25 AM ^
I was under the impression he was holding off, to see how things shake up with the coaching situation. The Debbie Downer in me has me a bit nervous that he moved this up. I wont jump until I hear what Tom VH has to say on this.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:41 AM ^
It is always wise to wait on Tom VH. But it is a bit scary to think he would announce prior to the resolution of the coaching situation.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:26 AM ^
Sitting on hands until we hear from Tom. Speculating won't do jack...
December 28th, 2010 at 10:27 AM ^
Is Michigan State even in this? Or is it still between UM and PSU?
December 28th, 2010 at 10:28 AM ^
UM, PSU, Iowa, MSU
December 28th, 2010 at 10:45 AM ^
ESPN is not helping PSU with their "JoPA is in the hospital and is stepping down" even after MaPa has denied it. So maybe its UM/MSU/IOWA.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:31 AM ^
MSU is in the mix, with Iowa too.
He recently visited (IIRC) Iowa and PSU and has been to both UM and MSU multiple times.
The pre-January decision has me half-concerned that someone besides UM made a very big impact on him the last couple months; of course, the other half has me thinking that it's always been UM and it's time to disclose the silent-commit.
I"m half confused, half nervous, halft anxious, and half excited.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:27 AM ^
Someone throw up the TomVH bat signal!
December 28th, 2010 at 10:30 AM ^
on the west coast. lets hope Tom is awake and functioning soon.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:27 AM ^
Not going to hit the panic button yet....but unless he's come to the conclusion that he really loves the university I don't see this as a good sign.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:56 AM ^
Yeah, unfortunately I am with you.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:28 AM ^
Is that another website (MSU) has this story before us. Usually when a prospect is set to announce and the timing is very surprising, it's not encouraging news.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:50 AM ^
I stopped worrying about recruits a few years ago so I am not going to freak out if Zettel goes elsewhere, but your point about this showing up on an MSU board first coupled with this being a change in his previous stance of waiting until after the New Year (presumably to see who the coach would be at UM) certainly leads me to think he will announce for MSU.
Ugh...
December 28th, 2010 at 10:28 AM ^
almost everything I read said Zettel was interested in how the coaching evaluation / change fell out. Makes me wonder if he wants to forsake the potential better fit for a more stable situation. I guess you could look at this positively and say he believes RR will be back, or that with either RR or JH he'd fit in, but I'm not feeling good about this.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:47 AM ^
Take a step off from the ledge, guys. We've been waiting for this decision for some time, be happy like this creepy cat is.
December 28th, 2010 at 12:40 PM ^
Please never post this picture again. It is really creepy.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:29 AM ^
December 28th, 2010 at 10:37 AM ^
I kind of agree with you Don. If he does commit somewhere else and RR is retained, there is still a chance that he can change his decision. So, not all hope is lost.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:48 AM ^
In the interest of full disclosure, my thoughts about Zettel are the same that I had about Will Campbell; i.e., if he really wanted to attend UM, why is he delaying things? I don't understand why the decision-making process takes so long, but then I'm not an athletically-gifted 18-yr-old with some of the nation's foremost institutions panting after me, either.
I hope he doesn't have a GF who's going up to EL.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:38 AM ^
Unfortunately, yes. For a life long M fan to have not pulled the trigger by now is bad news for us.
