Zack Novak interview in the Daily

Submitted by PeteM on

This is a Michigan Daily interview with one of my favorite Wolverines, Zack Novak, who I hadn't realized is no longer playing in the Netherlands.  He's now with McKinsey -- a pretty competitive place to get into even for a former Big Ten champion.  I'm glad that he seems to be doing well. I also found his comparision of the program when he arrived and now to be interesting, if not surprising:

Glad to hear Novak is doing well. It's almost impossible to quantify what he did for our program but I hope he appreciates every future achievement became it wouldn't have been possible without him.

Sounds like Zack is making the transition into the business world well. It also sounds like he isn't ruling out coaching in the future. Wouldn't mind seeing him on the Michigan bench in some capacity in the future.

Also, obligatory:

on that team believed they could beat Michigan State until that happenned.  If that doesn't happen, Michigan does not win that game and I doubt they go to the tournament.  I cannot remember a more meaningful and so clearly distinct turning point for a team or a program than that timeout.

I vividly remember listening to that game on the radio. Michigan basketball hasn't been the same since, and it's awesome. What Zack did for the basketball program cannot be overstated.

TMD: What are your predictions for the team for the upcoming season?

ZN: Let me tell you this: We won a share of a Big Ten championship with Stu Douglass and I playing 30 minutes a game. I think they’ll be all right.

Michigan Basketball as long as they have Beilein.  Michigan won a share of B1G title with arguably one of the least talented team ever to win it.  That's a big accomplishment considering the players they have on the team.

Now, Michigan is much more talented and B1G is down compared to the previous years.  They can still challenge for the B1G title, but Wisconsin has to be a favorite to win the title. As long as LeVert, Irvin and Walton can make a leap, I'm confident that they'll be able to reach Elite 8 for the third straight years.

I like it that Novak has decided not to "rule out" coaching.  I don't know whether to root for him to become such a successful entrepreneur that it wouldn't make financial sense to become a coach or to root for him ending up on the MIchigan sideline soon.

the culture of this program, than any other player in their tenure. Thanks Zack, you will always be my favorite Beilein player!

Zach was an incredible player for maximizing the limited athletic ability and talent he had. What a great guy to have on the team . . . I know it is borderline racist to say "grit" etc., but he is the kind of player it is critical to have on a team. Miss him.

Novak is one of the players that I would like to know what he is doing 10 years from now. From watching him play at Michigan to the European league, etc. Will be interesting to see what happens in the very end.
