Zach Gentry Question . . . should he wear number 16?

Watching Zach Gentry's video makes me think he could end up as a tight end similar to the way that Jay Riemersma (Zeeland's own) did back in the day!

Kid is a beast and could play another position is my point -- Like Riemersma (recruited as a QB but ended up growing into a TE)!

If you think about it, legends jerseys with the upgraded lockers are contrary to the concept of "The Team, The Team, The Team".

It's important to honor past players whose jerseys have been retired, but players who wear the jerseys should not have enhanced lockers.

But the whole point of the legends jerseys was that they were "earned" somewhat based on previous accomplishments and potential at a certain position.

Besides, could you imagine some 3rd string linebacker wearing the Wistert #11 jersey on the sidelines for 2-3 years before eventually transfering without properly adding to the honor of the jersey? Let's rid ourselves of Brandon's failed agendas once and for all.

I also love Sufjan Stevens. He's got a new album coming out in late March.

i felt like the whole point was to have a "living" retirement of the numbers, where instead of putting the names on a wall somewhere, the names are just permanently on the jersey. personally, i would've liked to just see the names on the shoulder pad, and no other text.

and so what if some random 3rd stringer gets a legends jersey? i mean - what happens if we have a random 3rd string qb wearing #7? what happens if we have some random 3rd string linebacker wearing #2? those guys aren't properly adding to the honor of those jerseys either.

i guess my point is that i feel like the legends jersey thing should instead of being at the level of "THIS IS A BIG DEAL" should be more at the level of "oh, neat".

and yeah - i'm excited for "carrie & lowell". sounds like he's getting back to his roots. i never got up the gumption to invest in "the age of adz".

I have to believe they're better ways to have "Oh, neat!" ideas than messing around with retired legends jerseys. IMO, it's not a small gesture. Your not only honoring someone's number and jersey but also they're entire career and post-college accomplishments (military, endowments, etc.). If they're not a necessity, let's leave the jerseys alone.

For example, I thought it awesome when Devin debuted Harmon's 98 against ND and then we kicked their ass. For one game, it's a neat idea to raise awareness of our legends while hopefully allowing a player to shine on the field. Which is what happened. But wearing the number for his entire career I feel is not sustainable and the "neat" factor kind of faded.

With Justice Hayes moving on maybe he does take #5 next year.

As for the legacy numbers, give a current player a patch honoring the old player but they keep their existing #.  If it is permissable by the NCAA maybe they can wear that number for only one game which I would assume to be homecoming.

Some legacy numbers have been great: Jake Ryan and Desmond Morgan being two examples.  But others have been so-so.  Realistically nobody is ever going to compare to Tom Harmon again so why put that kind of pressure on someone?

#16 is currently worn by Jack Wangler.

These are the traditional QB numbers that are currently not worn by an offensive player. Not sure if Harbaugh cares about doubling up on numbers or not but here-

  • #5
  • #9
  • #12*
  • #13

#15 is worn by walk on QB Garrett Moores, #18 by walk on RB Antonio Whitfield. We've seen walk ons change their numbers recently most likely for freshmen (Jonathan Keizer giving up #27 for Derrick Green)

#9 would be kind of unique for a QB here. The last time a QB wore #9 was walk on Kyle Cunningham in 2004.

*Malzone has first dibs since he's already enrolled

Benny Friedman - Cleveland Bulldogs, Detroit Wolverines, New York Giants, Brooklyn Dodgers (after he'd been a two-time All American at Michigan)

Bobby Layne - Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers

John Hadl - San Diego Chargers

Sammy Baugh - Washington "Gridlocks" (actual name not used here out of respect for those Native Americans who object to it)

Sid Luckman - Chicago Bears

Charley Conerly - New York Giants

Warren Moon - Edmonton Eskimos, Houston Oilers, Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings, Kansas City Chiefs

I think it would be perfect if he wore number 4.  Smith can change to another number because RB's shouldn't wear single numbers.  He can wear 21, which is a good number for a RB.  Then Gentry can change positions to be the punter because that is a good number for a punter too.  Then...

THE NUMBER DOESN"T MATTER!!!  WHAT MATTERS IS WE HAVE ANOTHER POTENTIAL WEAPON TO BEAT OHIO FRIGGIN' STATE AND RETURN THIS TEAM TO GLORY!!!

I really hope Harbaugh buries this idea that a number is what a player should strive for.

One of the worst things to come out of the Hoke / Brandon years was this obsession with numbers -- "legacy" numbers, or the #1 or #2 jerseys, or whatever.

I wish Harbaugh would tell the players -- "The hell with the damn number ... go out there and make people talk about you, not the number on your jersey."

It's quite simple really, in regards to what to do with the Legend numbers.

As dumb as it makes everyone from the last administration look after going through all the trouble and theatrics with un-retiring them, paint them on the plain ass luxury suite boxes.

I've been saying SOMETHING needs to go on them since they were built. Put the championship years up, paint the retired numbers on the box and be done with it.
