Your unpopular sports opinions?

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

I think the NHL should bring back ties instead of gimmicky shootouts. I also think the NBA should institute a 4 point line that was talked about not that long ago. Would shake up the game of basketball like it was when the 3 was instituted.

No politics or religion, please. This is a thread on your unpopular sports opinions.

sabermetrics are fine. most of the stuff that isconsidered to be "sabermetrics" is actually really simple stuff that most people have been aware of for decades (in baseball at least) but nobody has ever ever taken the time to actually count it all up and turn it into a statistic before.

what you probably dont like about sabermetrics are all the arm-chair "sabermetricans" who think they know everything.

He's not a good person, but I get why he's so idolized. He was truly the first great sports marketing phenom. Cable TV was getting widespread, the dunk contest was still a thing, and he had elite athleticism. Didn't hurt that he is a pretty good-looking guy, and he could score in buckets.

Jordan only had 3 seasons his whole career where averaged more than 6 assists. Lebron has only had 1 season his whole career (rookie) where he didn't average more than 6.  Look I didn't say he sucked. I just don't think he's the iconic (greatest player of all time) that people make him out to be. Great competitor, just not the greatest player of all time. Over the course of his career he averaged 3 more shots a game than Lebron to get an on average 3 more points a game.

whatever he needed to do for his team to win, and a lot of times that meant getting his all day long.  He was not a selfish basketball player though.  Many of the Bulls iconic moments involve plays where Jordan assisted in a game winning basket.  He was the smartest player I have ever watched, if you could not guard him he could go entire quarters seemingly without passing the ball because that was the easiest way for his team to win the game.

To say he is overrated, I don't know man, I don't know what you were watching.  Not the same game I was, that is for sure.

College basketball should just switch to NBA shotclock and 3 point line already.

Bo was a great man but his coaching record is very overrated compared to his legendary peers.

Big O averaging a triple double for a season is as impressive as Wayne Gretzky's 215 pt season.

Ichiro would have destroyed Pete Rose's hit record if he played in the MLB sooner.

I want Harbaugh to bring back helmet stickers.

I wouldn't mind IF THIS WOLVERINE AND THIS ONE ONLY was turned into a costumed mascot as long as it looked good.

is painfully slow to watch at home.  Someone needs to either speed up the game or cut a few innings.

NHL shootouts are dumb but I like the idea of 3 on 3 for OT.

Football should either eliminate or change the extra point to make it more difficult (unless you're Bama in the Orange Bowl).

There is no consistency in officiating. They should be allowed to be fined by the league they work for. Also replays for penalites or other bad officiating moves (disallowed goal in hockey for standing in the crease when not in the crease).

Sailing should allow boats to interact (bump) while tacking.

Rant over.

I think soccer should adopt unlimited substitutions. Not rolling like hockey, necessarily, but timed at the ref's discretion as now, only as many as you want. And you could go back into the game once you came out of it.

There would be more goals, teams would have more than one guy over thirty on their roster, you'd have more players to be fans of, etc.

I won't neg you because this is a thread dedicated to unpopular opinions, but I hate your idea. The end result would be counter to your intention. Watch an international friendly where unlimited subs happen. Once teams start implementing multiple substitutions the players are no longer in sync and offenses suffer massively. The game becomes puntball and is not fun to watch.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree. I won't neg you, either. :)

But I have watched plenty of international friendlies, thanks. And you know what the thing about them is? They're _friendlies._ Neither coaches nor players approach them the same way that they approach a regular game. That's why the rules are different, after all.

Unlimited substitutions would mean fresher legs, better ability to respond tactically to any situation, and higher quality soccer on the field.

The common, played-out argument that the game would be 'disrupted' was also used in old FA cup ball pre-1960? 65? against the idea of going to three subs instead of one or zero or whatever they had. And... turns out the game hasn't been disrupted at all.

and that includes virtually all sports, college and pro.  old uni's rule.

football should be played with black high-top cleats and white socks, not worn too high.  and while we're at it, with the older style (mid-70's to mid-90's) facemasks.

there is no need for 4 referees in a hockey game, that is ridiculous.
