Your unpopular music opinions

Submitted by Monkey House on

Since the sports thread was really fun and interesting I thought a music one might be as well. There seems to be a wide age range on there so it should be pretty fun.

Most people haven't heard of the song itself before, but there's a drum solo in it called the "amen break" which is incredibly famous and sampled in tons of hip hop, electronic music and rock music.  And I'd be pretty surprised if most people didn't recognize it immediately.

The Beatles are the single most over rated band. Period.  They were the fourth best band out of Britain durng their era.

Zep / Stones >> The Who >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Beatles

The Beatles were influential, but that's not the same thing as good.

It's like the movie "Citizen Kane" ... on so many lists as the best movie of all time ... and the reasons they cite is how groundbreaking the cinematography was.  Well, maybe ... but the movie itself is crap.

Stones/Who >> Zeppelin >>>> Beatles

The Beatles are likely the most listened to, most air time, highest selling, and covered band in the history of music. Influential AND good are two words that immediately come to mind when describing the Beatles. How is Yesterday not great? How is Help not great? Let It Be? The list is huge. I really don't understand how it can be spun that the Beatles are not good?

I almost posted this then thought "this opinion is too unpopular, even for this thread". Overrated doesn't mean bad. I don't love them, but they have good songs. They are widely regarded as one of the best musical acts of all time and I find them to be strikingly average-to-good.

One Hot Minute > Californication. Prince is a hell of musician, but 95% of his hits are terrible. Ringo was a good drummer. Bob Dylan was a good singer (who just had a bad voice). John Mayer is one of the top 5 active guitarists in music. Funeral is Arcade Fire's worst album. The Eagles should have never let Don Henley sing ever. Eric Clapton has always been a mediocre songwriter. The Division Bell was a great album. I have more. I shall return.

John Mayer is one of the top  guitarists in music - problem is, he insists on playing his insipid songs.

Eric Clapton has always been a mediocre songwriter - and he's been a boring tired sounding guitarist since barely after Cream broke up.

uhhh... Pac wasn't really know for his lyricism... He was known for the message he conveyed so in that context sure he's a great poet.

Nas would take the mantle on best culmination of speaking the truth and lyricism in the early 90s with Illmatic n such...

Then again you even knowing Pac is shocking to me considering your clear disdain for rap/hiphop...

JayZ definitely messed that one up.  That song was originally supposed to be a Eminem and Royce da 5'9, Bad Meets Evil, but Jay ended up replacing Royce and putting it on the Blueprint.  I feel like Jay had to know what he was getting into.

Huh, I honestly don't know too much of Big L's stuff. I'll check it out.

Also, Rakim definitely definitely gets slept on too much in the discussion of best rapper.

Rakim was a pioneer for lyrical technique. Yes deff check out Big L! You will probably recognize his song MVP.

His other most famous song is probably Ebonics which in my opinion is right up with 10 Crack Commandments of sacred rap music history.

It's unfortunate that most people probably only heard of him from Eminem's line in Patiently Waiting (which by the way is one of the greatest lyrical verses of all time)

"take some Big and some Pac and mix em up in a pot, sprinkle a lil Big L on top wtf do you got? the realist n illest killas tied up in a knot, juggernaughts of this rap shit, like it or not"

Em killed 50 on his own song too lol.

Also, I don't mind that Taylor Swift apparently rules the world.  She deserves it.

And I crank Toby Keith up and sing along even though I hate his politics.
