Your opinion on opening at Utah on a Thursday?

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

I just realized that Michigan's opener for the 2015 season is on a Thursday night.

In fact, I saw on twitter that neither Michigan, OSU nor MSU open their season on a fall Saturday.

Michigan opens at Utah on Thursday the 3rd of September.

MSU opens at Western Michigan (WTF?!) on Friday

OSU opens at Virginia Tech on the 7th, labor day

I don't like this damnit. TOE MEETS LEATHER AT 1 O'CLOCK ON SATURDAY.

I'm not normally a fan of the Thursday night games, but in this case it means we get to see the beginning of the Harbaugh era a couple days sooner.  I can live with that.

to that game in Utah and then the 2014 season happened and I changed my mind quickly and then we hired Harbaugh and I'm thinking of taking a road trip and watching that game in person, would be so exciting to start off the new era in person!!!

We don't have a good QB right now. The game is on the road, at night in what will be a very hostile environment. This will be one of Utah's biggest home games ever, and some QB will be making their first road start in it and the first game of a new system. Aside from the fact that Utah is just a pretty decent program. So yes, I think we will lose.

Not sure why from that reasoning you've concluded that I believe we will go 0-12 or that I wanted Schiano

I actually kind of agree with Borden on this one. I hope we win of course. But Utah beat us in the Big House last year, and it wasn't that close. I know we have a new coach, but now we're going on the road to play a good team in a tough environment. Yes Harbaugh is going to change things, I get that. But Chip Kelly lost his first game as head coach to Boise State, and then went on to the Rose Bowl. That was the Blount Punch game. I think there is a strong possibility that Michigan loses that game, but the coaching changes going on at Utah may help us out. So who knows?

Utah is a well-coached, tough football team. I was just in that great state for a week of skiing, and the people are extremely polite and friendly. The natural beauty of the Wasatch is unique.

This game will be a good victory to kick off the Harbaugh era.

My daughter (U of M BFA '14) is down a game in the sib rivalry to her twin brother (U of U B.S. '14). After absorbing a year of grief from her brother, she (along with her M dad and M stepmom) is absolutely reconvening at Rice-Eccles for payback. Now, with added HARBAUGH? Game on!

Because it would be hard to find two kids more different...ironic considering the nine months of close quarters they shared :-). The boy is a hockey playing, sports stat reciting jock...he went to Utah because it was the closest big university to world class skiing (great criteria, right?). By the way, he also is an Michigan diehard, and lives and dies with them except when they play the Utes...a summer in Red's hockey camp cemented that.

Girl is an old school hippie type (art school was for her) who lived in one of the vegetarian co-ops in AA. Had her pegged for a small liberal arts college but the Art School recruited her out of high school...needless to say, the day that she asked if it was OK if she accepted her offer to attend Michigan, there were more than a few tears from her M alum parents. And actually, she moved out to SLC after she graduated and the two of them share an apartment there, so even though they couldn't be more opposite they are pretty devoted siblings. Guess we did something right.

Sorry for the TL;DR...but I'm pretty damn proud of them. Oh, and kudos on your avatar...I'm from the Bo era and have fond memories of the decorated helmets. Not sure I'm in the "hope Jimmy brings them back" camp, but if he decides to do that, I'm on board!

Can't wait. We'll have about 6 people driving in an RV from Denver and meeting up with an additional 5 or 6 and renting a second RV in Salt Lake. We did a similar trip to Lincoln a couple of years ago with 12 guys. It was one of the best road trips I've ever taken. Been looking forward to this one for years.

Utah is a well coached team that has had our number. Playing them on the road in high altitude will be even harder. I'm also not looking forward to the BYU game, they have a great running QB that could give us fits. I would have rather played against someone like Washington State or Cal.

Washington State would probably throw for 700 yards.   That doesnt mean they'd win but it would not be glorious for us.   Cal likewise throws for a bazillion yards a game.  Be careful what you wish for - our 5th CB would be on the field the entire game for those type of offenses.  Utah's offense is more or less Iowa.

Definitely going. Short flight from Seattle. And SLC smells like fresh baked bread. Harbs will need our support in a tough first game match-up on the road.

I think it's a good idea to play a game like this every once in a while where you have the spotlight all to yourself. Recruits everywhere will be watching this game.

Oh yeah...Red Iggy is a must. They were featured on Diners, DriveIns and Dives (sp?) and have a full page of homemade mole dishes on their menu (and they're all great). You'll have a wait (even at 9 PM) but it's well worth it. For bars, Gracie's is a quasi-Michigan hangout (we watched the M00N game there this fall with a couple dozen other sufferers). Otherwise, you gotta go up to Park City...stop by No Name on Main St for a beer and you'll probably run into some Olympians...that's the hang out spot for US Ski Team members.

I personally like to play a cupcake the very first week. I want the players to get a taste for winning, and some confidence early. Even though we lost to Utah this past season, I believe the coaching change immediately makes us better. If hoke were still coaching, I wouldn't have any confidence in winning at Utah. A big part of our success or failure next year relies on us having a QB that we can count on. I believe Kevin Hogan or Wilton Speight will be our guy, and if true, will lead us to at least 8-9, and as many as 10 games next season.
