Your least favorite Buckeye

If you are on MGoBlog, chances are you don't like many, if any, Buckeyes.  We all have that one guy who, more than the rest, powers the turbines of hatred we have for our OSU rivals. 

I nominate  LB Andy Katzenmoyer. 

As a freshman, Andy Katzenmoyer was the 90's version of James Laurinaitis, during a simpler time when Road Warrior Animal was the only member of the Laurinaitis clan you were familiar with. 

From a hype machine standpoint, he was AJ Hawk without the Brady Quinn's sister sideshow.   He started his first game as a true freshman, a fact that Brent Musberger wouldn't let you forget about over a three year period.   He was God's gift to football, a self absorbed prodigal son who would see his play decline in the years following his tremendous frosh season.  Everyone noticed he wasn't as good as his reputation- everyone except the media who decided to award him the Butkus Award and make him a 1st team All America his Junior season.  He would ride his undeserved reputation to becoming a 1st round pick of the pre-Belichek Patriots, for whom he would play less than 3 years and be universally accepted as an awful bust.

From an academic standpoint, he set the low standard to which Terrelle Pryor would eventually aspire.  It became common knowledge he was only able to stay eligible by taking "Golf" and was the beneficiary of having a very influential booster base who was adamant that academics would not interfere with OSUs on field success. 

After losing in his first two attempts to beat Michigan, his team got it done in his junior (and final) season, winning comfortably at the Horseshoe.  I was there, suffering with my fellow student road trippers just barely a year after we had stormed the field and celebrated with roses in our mouths and pepper spray in our eyes.  The face of 1996-1998 OSU football, Andy Katzenmoyer.  I don't like him.  Who don't you like?

These are the Buckeyes I hate most.  Specifically, every father and grandfather that lines the streets outside the stadium on the day of The Game every even-numbered year.  They hold their young sons and daughters with one hand, and give me and everyone else in Maize and Blue the middle finger with the other other hand.  The cycle goes on and on.

I was going to say Pryor until I remembered Justin Boren. Don't like the workouts fatass, that's fine, leave, but don't slam the program on your way out.

I'm with B-Nut-GoBlue in that I can't hate on people 10 years younger than me for choosing to play for another program that is very similar to the program I root for.

Jim Tressel though, was all the worse since he was a bigger cheater than any SEC coach we love to hate, and yet cloaked himself in the utterly cynical "Senator Tressel" thing. Can the media ever credit a coach for "doing it right" again after being burned by Tressel and Paterno? Plus the mafia-like "sacred brotherhood" culture he established there still pervades the school and its fanbase, and spread via Dantonio to MSU since. Unlike Woody, on whom at least there is general accord on the fact that he was a good ol' coach who choked a player and was rightly removed for it, Tressel wasn't even officially "fired"--just allowed to resign and retain benefits and be part of the program. It's a testament to just how sick of a place he turned Ohio State into that he remains revered by most OSU fans while Herbstreit, one of their own who suggested Tressel should be fired, was chased out of the state with death threats.

It drives me nuts at how blatant it all was--the Troy Smith lone gunman thing, the cars of Clarett to Pryor and how the taken-back testimony of Maurice turned out to be true 10 years later as well and yet the NCAA still couldn't make the case. How Pryor had to be compelled to provide even the shred they got OSU on (traveling to signing schlock ceremonies with his benefactor) by the NFL. How Santonio Holmes admitted to an agent who later came clean about his payments to players that Holmes and his buddies were already taken care of, and nobody but nobody was at all surprised. How when FINALLY all this repeated crap everyone knew about over a decade-long span became something NCAA would investigate, OSU lawyered up, gambled the NCAA wouldn't have the balls to fight a total war, and won just a one-year postseason ban while leaving the program in such a shape that Urban Meyer agreed to take it over.

Every Big Ten fan from our age will forever after walk with his head and eyes bit lower because Jim Tressel was one of ours. College football shall be forever worse because he was a part of it. He might be the greatest shame in Big Ten history, certainly in my lifetime, if not for the Penn State awful thing.

George Steinbrenner is next on the list. He took Henson from us.

John Cooper. I love that man. His pure surprise at another beating, Tim B running past him for 300+ yards, and willingness to play thugs like Boston without success. Would we break NCAA rules by paying for OSU to bring him back?

Vlade Janakievski because he was good and had a weird name. Made a lasting impression on a teenage macdaddy. And from the same era, Pete Johnson because he was a HUGE RB and it seemed Iike we could never stop him. God I hate those guys. Beat Ohio.

Tough choice. Boren has to be tops because you don't like the way Michigan football was being run by its coach, it's your choice to leave. But to Ohio? That's bottom-level, hellish ice pits stuff right there (sorry for the obscure Dante's Inferno reference).

at YSU and Ohio, it finally caught up with him, and years later he's still being honored and revered despite the disgrace.

Meanwhile, Ohio got a coaching upgrade and a slap on the wrist.

the bucknuts had a running back named Jeff Logan.  I remember him saying something like "I'm just glad I don't have to play against my own defense because they hit so hard."  We owned them that year, and I loved it when he carried the ball and got hit by the M defense.  Typical big mouth bucknut who couldn't back it up.

Evan Turner for obvious reasons.  I am not a big basketball fan, but still catch every UM game from the comfort of my laptop.

Terrelle Pryor - I was convinced we'd land him way-back-when.

Stoneburner - because he has a badass name.

I can tolerate most everyone else, from Herbie to Robert Smith.
