Your First Game at Michigan Stadium

Submitted by Roy G. Biv on

As football season is upon us, I thought it may be interesting to hear about MGoUsers' first games in the Big House.  Was it memorable, or was it a body-bag snoozer?  For me, my first game was against Bernie Kosar and YTM as a 14-year old kid, with M picking him off several times for the win (a nod to Wolverine Historian and the 10 years ago thread, some comments about the Phil Brabbs game being people's first brought this to mind).

Georgia won, I think 7-6.

A little more than half full.

I remember the GA section making a confederate flag with cards.

I believe that was the last time an SEC team played north of the Mason - Dixon line until Saban beat Paterno last season.

2000 Michigan Indiana for my 9th Birthday, I might have gone to an earlier game with Motts, but I can't remember when that was, and since I have a program from the IU game, I'm going with that one as my first

Man there are not a lot of us on here who started prior to 1985 and i dont consider myself old (or at least i didnt until today). A crazy first game as Michigan scored more points than any other game i have watched or been to since then. The 1976 Navy game was a colossal beat down where Michigan dropped 70 points on them while only allowing 14! Great times back then cause you got to run on the field after the game without worry about getting arrested or harrassed. For an 8 year old (but really any age) it was awesome. Edit: I guess a lot more "old timers" replied while i was typing my response. Good to see

1956. Took the Football Flyer train to the Stadium from downtown Detroit with my parents. I was a little kid.

Not sure who we played, but I'm pretty sure we won, because the adults were going crazy.

The Flyer stopped right in front of the stadium entrance. No parking hassles, the adults got to drink safely, and I remember the train being a lot of fun. Lots of singing "The Victors."

My parents bought pennants for my room at every game. I had a whole set for the Big Ten, except MSU. ;)

October 26, 1985

Just 2 months into kindergarten.  I didn't know the rules of football.  We won 42-15 but I have no personal memories of what happened on the field.  All I remember is walking into the stadium and seeing 100,000 people.  I was in awe.  That voice comes into your head and asks, "What is this wonderful place and can I live here?"

Only 2 years ago when I was able to obtain a copy of the game did I finally get to see what happened at my first ever game in college football's holy cathedral .

I arrived two hours early to my first game as a freshman. I didn't know much about football, but we ended up losing by only 2 to what would be a BCS champion and undefeated Utah team. Little did I know that a 2 point loss to an eventually-undefeated team would kick off the worst year in Michigan Football history :(

But, I stayed. Last game as an undergrad was the end of the streak. Stayed. Champion.

Mine is a story of humiliation that I have yet to live down years later.

We've had tickets in our family since my dad attended the university back in the late 70's well my first game experience was the 1991 game vs ND (the Desmond catch game). I was only 4 and my parents figured I was old enough to sit through and enjoy a whole game, they were wrong. I was tired and wanted to leave late in the 4th quarter before the play even happened. We all know what happened on that 4th and 1 from Elvis to Desmond, and I made my family miss it.

I have never been able to live down this game, my dad for as good of a person as he is still gives me shit for making him leave, I don't blame him one bit.

2002 - Freshman year.

I had watched college football on and off but grew up a hockey player.  I still would watch games but not like an everyweek thing.  It was the same with the NFL.  Once I hit college I started to watch a ton more.

Michigan missed 3 FGs in the game.  2 of with were Brabbs.  As time ran out he kicked a 44 yeard FG to win the game.  I just remember going crazy in the student section jumping and hugging everyone.  It was the second best game of my college career.  Braylonfest being the best.

In case you were wonder, I cheated for the details.

2002 Washington game. I was raised a Notre Dame fan (it's not my fault, my dad brainwashed me; I have seen the light), so I had never been to Michigan stadium. I was a freshman and didn't realize how long it would take to get to the stadium, so I rolled in a few minutes late. The obvious first thought of someone who has never been to Michigan stadium (especially pre-renovations) is "How is this the biggest stadium in the country? The trees are way taller!" I walked in and just as I came out of the tunnel into the student section and grasped my first view of the stadium and 110,000+ fans, Chris Perry broke a 57 yard touchdown. The crowd erupted and I was hooked for life. I can honestly say I just got goosebumps from typing that story, and always do every time I tell it.

Snooooooozer, unless you were 7 and it was your first time in the Big House!  Jamie Morris ripped off a huge run after his shoe was pulled off.  That is my one big memory from the game.  It was with my cousin, Dad and grandfather so it was a special time.

Illinois 1996.  Scott Dreisbach ran a 70 yard touchdown.  A few years later I found a panoramic print of the big house from this game, its in a frame on my wall forever reminding me of the day I saw my first Michigan game.

I had been to the Michigan v. Notre Dame game the previous year at Notre Dame.  Even after that experience I remember thinking that Michigan Stadium was just insanely cool - my only other reference point for college football at that point was Falcon Stadium at the Air Force Academy.

My dad bought me a Wheatley jersey and I saw the law quad/library, which made enough of an impression that I came back 13 years later for law school - that was at least part of the reason.

Michigan lost, but I was still hooked - the next year hurt pretty badly when CU beat Michigan and I had to hear it from everyone in my Colorado high school who all of a sudden loved CU.

First game Navy 1981

Think my user name answers that question.

Yikes ! I just double checked and it was 1981!! M won 25-7, rebounding from the loss the prior week as the #1 team in the country to a lousy Wisconsin team.  Anyone know how I can change my user name???

My uncle took me to see the '74 game against Navy when I was 10!  I think it was the home opener and we won something like 54-0. I talked my uncle in staying for the entire game, he wanted to leave after the 3rd QTR. I just remember the RBs and Franklin running all over this team. Even as a kid I thought we must be playing a high school team!

My first game as a student was in '81 against ND. After the big upset at WI that knocked us out of the number 1 ranking. It was the first time that I could remember that we were consensus AP and UPI number 1. Bo got the team to regroup and beat ND rather handily, 25-7. If I remember correctly, ND was number 1 or number 2 in the country at the time!

Pretty great first game to make it to. I went with my then-girlfriend who pretty much just went with me because she lliked road trips. Despite no longer being together I still had the best time ever after watching on tv for so many years. Hoping to make it to a game with my dad this year.

2004 season opener against Miami-Ohio. The drum major dropped the mace after the goal post toss, and everyone around us started moaning that we were going to lose.

Things got worse when the expected starting QB didn't come out, but rather some unknown freshman named Chad Henne (and no one knew how to pronounce his name).

Shazor returned an INT 60+ yards for a TD, Braylon made some ridiculous plays, and Michigan blew out Miami 43-10.

My uncle brought my brother and I to Purdue 1989.

Didn't go to another game unitl '99 ND after I transferred as a sophmore to Ann Arbor.  First weekend on campus.  Lived at 931 S. State right at Hoover.  Really doesn't get any better than that.  Nothing like the electricity in the air on gameday in A2.
