Your earliest Michigan FB memory
With the current theme of looking back at the past I thought this would be a decent topic.
My uncle took to my brother and I to our first game in '89 when I was 9 years old, so that's the earliest one I can really put my finger on. But the moment I truly "became a fan" was unquestionably on the 2 pt conversion PI call on Desmond in 90. I think I had one random MSU sweater for some unknown reason...after that moment that thing never saw the light of day again.

Watching Desmond win the Heisman on a 13" TV with rabbit ears. I was seven.
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:12 AM ^
Mercury Hayes' last second TD to beat Virginia.
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:14 AM ^
That was the first game I ever went to. It was so loud when he caught that pass.
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:13 AM ^
I was only 4 or 5 years old, but I remember Desmond's catch against ND.
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:14 AM ^
Probably late 70's, when I had no interest in college football. Silly me!
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:14 AM ^
Watching Tim Biakabatuka on my grandma's rabbit-eared TV.
August 2nd, 2010 at 11:55 AM ^
I have vague memories of my dad watching the 95 and 96 OSU games, and the first game I actually sat down and watched from start to finish was the 97 opener against Colorado.
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:14 AM ^
5 years old at a New Year's Day party with my parents and watching UM v. Washington in the 1981 Rose Bowl. I was in awe of the helmets.
It was the first football game that I can distinctly remember watching
August 2nd, 2010 at 11:41 AM ^
Oh my God! 16 points!! You guys really like me... you REALLY like me!!!!!!
This is the Best Day Ever!!!!!!
Edit - Obviously the sarcasm didn't come through -- everyone is getting the pos-bangs to counter the neg-trolls of this a.m.
I think the sarcasm came through. It's just that sarcasm isn't always funny.

Trucking some unsuspecting safety on his way to the endzone
I was probably about 8
August 2nd, 2010 at 11:29 AM ^
Watching him run is my first memories of team. I think his name helped my memory hang on. Also Mercury Hayes played at some charity BBall game that I went to ( I think at a highschool by my house, hardly remember. I just remember me and a bunch of other young kids crowding around him as he took off his jersey and threw it up for grabs. I wound up getting knocked over.
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:16 AM ^
The '94 ND game. I started crying when the domers took the lead late, and tried to walk off, but my dad made me stay and watch, saying Collins would lead them back. After the drive and Remy Hamilton's game-winner, I was hooked for life.
August 2nd, 2010 at 11:13 AM ^
and i ran out of my house and down the street yelling and screaming when remy hit that game winner...

First blurryish memory that I can only partly recall: Desmond's punt return
First crystal clear/can recall every emotion, feeling memory: Remy Hamilton to beat ND, 1994

Ufer. Then later climbing the wall on State to watch practice. Bo cussed me out once (OSU week).
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:19 AM ^
I don't remember any specifics, what year it was, which game we may have been watching (I think the short memory is probably a combination of several instances of the same thing happening), but I was in our basement watching a game with my dad.
He's a relatively quiet guy. Not shy, but just doesn't really go crazy about much, and he doesn't really care all that much about sports in general. Seeing the look on his face and hearing the scream of "OH BABY!!!!" coming from him as he jumped off the couch after a touchdown just put everything over the top for me. If he was that excited about this, I should be too.

I remember holding my Father's hand as he and my Uncle pleaded with the security gaurds to let me sit on my Father's lap (I was 4) to watch the game. I never felt more loved or wanted by anyone in my life. After that the memory is vague other than the tears of joy in my Father's and Uncle's faces.

Wow, I can think of no greater gift a father could give a son. This belongs in a in Hallmark card.
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:19 AM ^
My earliest Michigan Football memory involved a hail mary from the arm of Kordell Stewart. I was in the opposite end zone when it happened -- I will forever remember that until the day I die. A sad, sad day. I remember my dad covering my ears as we walked out.
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:22 AM ^
I stayed in a hotel in Livonia that night. I rode the elevator up with a large number of CU players.

happened 65 rows in front of me, and its so vivid in my mind its like it happened yesterday...

Listened to the 4th quarter of this one on the radio on the way to see Aerosmith at the Palace. Brutal.

Desmond having a diving TD catch against Indiana or some other lowly team.
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:21 AM ^
Sitting in a combine cab, as my Dad cut corn/wheat, and listening to Bob Ufer go absolutely nuts after a 2 yd gain. My whole family are Sparties, but those fall afternoons listening to Ufer got me hooked on everything Michigan.
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:25 AM ^
I was raised in a Sparty household but there brainwashing did not work on me! I am 25 but I had never watched a College Football (on TV, my dad took me to a few Spartan games) game until Lloyd's first season. I had always only watched the NFL... mostly Lions games. So my first Michgian experience was the Virginia game. So back then I really didn't appreciate just how awesome that ending was.
My first Michigan game (in person) was the 2005 MSU game at Spartan Stadium. My first game at the Big House was unfortunatly The Horror.
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:25 AM ^
So obviously the blame for The Horror rests squarely on your shoulders.
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:28 AM ^
I suppose I walked right into that one.... doh!
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:25 AM ^
I'm a bit younger, so the earliest thing I can remember is of me and my friends imitating Charles Woodson on the playground. We were reinacting his interception against MSU.

Phil Brabbs Dominates that field goal!
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:31 AM ^
Are you 13 by chance?
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:46 AM ^
I moved to Ann Arbor from North Carolina the week before the Michigan v. Washington game, and also Phil Brabbs is from my Dad's hometown. So it was my first real exposure to The University of Michigan and I was completly sold from that day on.
Before that I was a fan of Mack Brown's University of North Carolina.

Ahh - makes sense! Welcome.

The third Saturday in November, 1969. I was 9 yrs. old. My parents left me alone in the house. I was flipping through the channels on the new Zenith color television. I saw two teams playing football - one had really cool helmets. I watched with interest as some kid named Garvie Craw scored a touchdown against what was supposed to be an unbeatable team coached by some fat man in a short sleeve shirt. It changed my life.
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:59 AM ^
that was my first memory as well- i had no idea how historical that moment was as i watched it unfold.
we had just moved to detroit from nyc- i was 8 . we were actually back in nyc for a party with my parents. stuck in a hotel room with my 2 other brothers we had nothing to do. we turned on the tv and were quite intrigued to see our new home state on tv. we decided to watch- the rest is history. all 3 of us attended um in some fashion.
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:26 AM ^
...mine.
My first experience with college football was the 1976 Orange Bowl. I was living in Germany and AFRTS probably showed it tape delay a week after it happened for all I know. Whatever, I was in third grade and it was the first time I’d seen Michigan’s uniforms and helmet and I was enthralled. In retrospect, it was probably written in the stars at that moment that I’d end up going to school at Michigan.

They must lead a very sad meaningless life.

I think it may have been a glitch.
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:47 AM ^
Every post to randomly get -3 to -6? When most of them are positive M football memories? Nah.
My response is to just +1 every post with an undeserved neg like this. and yes, their existence must be a sad one
EDIT: and now all the posts just jumped up +5. Looks like they're at least sentient trolls... who disappear if we talk about them
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:48 AM ^
Yea, you teach those MGoAssholes. I cant MGoBelieve that someone would just neg people for no reason at all. These MGoPoints are incredibly MGoMeaningful and benefit all of us. They aren't MGoUseless at all.
EDIT: the post I replied to was deleted. It looks lost now
I just feel sorry for people like you. It can't be fun to go through life so angry and critical, which is what all people who troll really are. If you were a happy positive person, you would never take the time to write something so dumb, and thus, I feel sorry for you.
Sure, points are indeed pointless. But they help this community communicate to others when they like what they say and when they don't. What is so terrible about that? Try being a happier person, you'll enjoy it more.
As a side, my first memory is the Kordell game. My first memory in life is of me throwing up after eating a jar of pickles. Funny how your first memories tend to be traumatic.
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:41 AM ^
I dont remember much detail, but my first UM football memory was when I was five years old watching the 1998 Rose Bowl when we won the National Title.
August 2nd, 2010 at 11:31 PM ^
I vaguely remember the first Michigan game I attended, which was the victory over OSU in Tom Brady's final home game. I remember the bowl win against Alabama more vividly however. Good times.
EDIT: I wasn't drunk, I was six.

with the cool hats on TV. This was the early 70s and i had little concept of football, but my family seemed pretty into it..
August 2nd, 2010 at 10:48 AM ^
walking off the field at the horseshoe after having beaten OSU for the third straight year (76-77-78) and the announcers talking about how he would go down as one of the greatest players in the history of the rivalry.
I think my first game at the big house was in '77 against Duke, although I don't remember too much about it, as I was too young. I do remember a long run (90+ yards) by Butch Woolfolk against Wisconsin that I think was in 77 or 78.
