Your earliest Michigan FB memory

Submitted by 931 S State on

With the current theme of looking back at the past I thought this would be a decent topic.

My uncle took to my brother and I to our first game in '89 when I was 9 years old, so that's the earliest one I can really put my finger on.  But the moment I truly "became a fan" was unquestionably on the 2 pt conversion PI call on Desmond in 90.  I think I had one random MSU sweater for some unknown reason...after that moment that thing never saw the light of day again.

Bo's first year.  I remember the stadium was not full and I went with some friends and ran around in what was then box seats, the first 4-6 rows where not many people were sitting that day.  This was a time where your parents could drop you at the stadium and it was like $3 or so to get in for students (K-12).  You would go with a bunch for friends and have free roam of much of the end zone.

I remember watching the OSU game on TV.  I have vague memories of us killing Iowa and Arizona in those early years

The first time I walked into Section 4 when I was about 7.  Most beautiful sight I had ever seen.  I remember sometime around then asking my parents "was I born a Michigan fan"?

And they both replied "Of course you were."

My first memory is a bad one.  I was 4 and my first game was against Syracuse.  All I remeber is leaving at halftime because it was so hot and crowded.

As far as a specific memory/event, it's the 1988 Miami loss. I had been going to games since I was about 2-3, but my first real memory was at age 5, and it was not a good one. As the stadium cleared out, I just stood on my seat and cried.

I definitely remember watching and cheering for Jamie Morris before that, but no actual images are crystallized in my brain from that early.

My first time to the Big House to watch them play against Iowa in '97, when my older brother was a Freshman on campus.  I'll (hopefully) never forget that game.

Similar to many others, my first memory is of Desmond Howard. I have a vague recollection of all the players on both teams being in one mass in the middle of the field; Desmond entered the pile on one side and somehow emerged from it on the other and raced for a touchdown.  my guess now is that it was a kick return.  Needless to say, as a 5 or 6 year old, I was amazed.

My earliest memory of a distinct game was the Remy Hamilton FG to beat ND in '94.  Although, the previous November I did cut out all the detnews article about the 28-0 victory over OSU and tape them to a sheet of notebook paper (my idea of how to preserve that game for posterity sake I guess).  I will always associate Chuck Winters interception with that game because of those articles.

I was brainwashed from a young age, but the first time I really remember being truly influenced by the outcome of a game was Desmond being tripped in the endzone against MSU on the 2pt conversion when I was 11.  I was a Michigan "fan" before that, but my fanatasism was born on that day.  I was in a terrible mood the rest of that weekend, and to this day, my wife leaves me alone for hours after a tough loss.

The first really vivid one I have is watching the 1977 Rose Bowl in our basement family room in Canton, MI. UM lost 14-6. My father banged the radiator and my mother yelled a lot. It was at that moment that I realized just how incredibly important Michigan football was in the grand scheme of things.

My earliest memory is of the 1989 ('90) Rose Bowl vs USC.  I was ten, and was at my grandmother's house in Dearborn.  We had the game on, but people were only partially paying attention.  I remember glancing at the slightly hazy television just as Leroy Hoard got the ball up the middle.

He broke a tackle in the backfield, sidestepped two more, then cut towards the left sideline.  Two more USC defenders went down.  He was finally tracked down after 61 yards.  I had always loved the helmets of course, and had been a fan, but for some reason that play was the first truly vivid thing I remember about Michigan football.  From that point on, no one was getting in the way of the TV.  I was hooked.

The night my parents told me I was moving to Michigan.  After they told me, I turned on the TV to watch Tom Brady beat Alabama in overtime.  Great game.  First Michigan memory.

early memories as my Dad and I would work together on Saturdays when I was young. We would always be working silently while listening to the  Michigan game on WJR.

The first one that really sticks out and still brings me chills when I think back was Ufers' call in '79 of Wangler to Carter vs. Indiana.

Before the last play my dad had stopped working and was just standing there frozen, so I did the same. We heard the last play together and we both went crazy.

The only feeling that has come close is Henne to Manningham vs. Penn State in 2005.

I remember being so frustrated about how we were able to move the ball but always seemed to commit an inopportune turnover.  Regardless, it was a great intro to Michigan football.

I have vague memories of the 1978 Notre Dame and the Rose Bowls in 1978 and 1979 against UW and USC.

Distinct memories from the first games I ever went to during the 1979 season, season opener vs NW and the famous IU game.

1987.  I was 11 y.o. and my best friends dad took us to watch the Iowa game.  We got there early for some tailgating and had a blast.  We were playing tag football with some other kids when my friend threw the ball and it landed in this guys Porsche.  We thought we were dead meat, but then the guy came over and let us climb into the car and was really cool about it.  Even took us for a ride after the game (we happened to be sitting right next to him in the stadium).  Michigan thumped Iowa and we had a great time.  One of the best memories ever.

First game I had ever been to and from what I remember it was amazing; granted I was 8 at the time with little bearing on just what this win meant for Michigan football, but it sparked my interest in the greatest program of all time.

My first memory was going to the Michigan rally for the Rose Bowl for the 97'/98' national championship team.  I was 7 at the time, and I just remember being amazed at seeing how huge all of the players were.

My earliest memory is the 1988 Hall of Fame Bowl, I was almost 7 years old.  The confusing part about the memory is that I remember it being a big deal that Bo wasn't coaching the game due to health reasons.  But if it's my first memory, how did I know the significance of Bo?

I remember watching Michigan tie OSU 10-10 (or at least I remember the missed field goal at the end of the game).  I'm pretty sure that I was at the fairly new Briarwood Mall the next day and they announced that OSU was going to the Rose Bowl instead of Michigan.

It was hard to understand as an eight year old boy....not much easier to understand as a 45 year old man.

I vaguely remember the Rose Bowls against USC back in the late Bo years - I was 6 or 7 - but the earliest thing that I actually remember clearly was Rocket Ismail tearing us up with all those kickoff returns.  Yeowch.

Early 70's, my Dad was always a fan and I was too, I remember Dennis Franklin getting hurt which led to "the vote", I remember my Dad telling me how nasty a man Woody was. I remember always listening to WJR and Bob Ufer, I still for the life of me can't figure out why WJR turned traitor.

I rem. watching the 1976 Orange Bowl. We had moved to Oklahoma from Taylor, Mi. when I was in kindergarten. All my friends were Sooner fans and I was cheering for the Wolverines. The dreaded Sooners won and made my life tough for awhile. I rem watching the game in vivid black and white. We got our first color tv that summer.

I know I had been a Michigan fan before that, but we all gathered at my Grandma's house for a Rose Bowl party. I suppose now we know why I'm such a HUGE fan.

First vivid memory of Michigan football was watching Rob Houghtlin kick 4 field goals giving Iowa a 12-10 win over us in 1985.  I was 14 and that was the first game I ever remember watching straight through on TV.

My earliest memory of a Michigan game live was Jim Harbaugh's 77 year TD pass to John Kolesar to seal up the OSU game 27-17 in 1985.  That was awesome.

I attended the game with a high school football teammate who was being recruited by Michigan and his father.

The best seats I have ever had: Row 40, 40 yard line, on the east side of the stadium, surrounded by many OSU fans.

Yes this was the 24-12 upset of No. 1 OSU.

Barry Pierson with 3 interceptions and long punt returns. Fullback Garvey Craw constantly rumnning for forst downs on third and short to help UM control the game.

I'll never forget the OSU alumni fans crying on their way out of the stadium.

Pretty hard to beat that first game.

Pretty tough to see a better game than that game. I only see 1-2 home games per year but I've still seen the following classics:

Notre Dame come from behind win in 2009

Wisconsin comeback win in 2008

PSU last play victory in 2005

MSU triple overtime win in 2004

22-0 defeat of OSU in ?

28-0  defeat of OSU in ?

10-7 defeat of OSU in 1971 with woody Hayes ripping up the downmarker after a Michigan interception to end the game.

1991 I was 11, OSU Vs. Mich. I remember flipping through the channels and seeing the helmets, the commentators were talking about the wolverines and I was trying to figure out how the helmets meant the wolverines, I saw the 3 stripes in the back and figured they were wolverine claw marks??? 5 minutes into watching Desmond returns the punt, "Hello Heisman happens, and the rest is history. Next day I begged my parents for a Starter Half Zip Michigan winter coat, I got it and wore the shit outta that thing.

November 16th, 347 yards in the freezing rain. This is the game that sits atop the single game rushing record chart. 'nuff said.

In 40 years since then, there must have been a day of worse weather.  But I can't think of when it might have been.  It rained.  Then freezing rain.  Then a little snow.  Then sleet.

And had Johnson played that whole game, he'd probably have rushed for 400+ yards.

I'll share two, since I don't know which came earlier--I was around 4-5 at the time for both:

1)  It was the game when FSU came to the Big House, and My Dad's old seats were in the endzone, right by the student section.  M lost, and I clearly remember the students chanting "F*** You" to the rythym and tone of the Seminole war chant whenever it was played.  I remember asking my Dad what they were saying, and him muttering something incomprehensible.

2)  Our old neighbors had a son who went to Purdue, so we would often go to games @ Purdue and tailgate with them (we lived in Chicago).  It should be mentioned that our neighbor was old enough to be my Grandpa, and  he liked both women and the sauce.  What I remember was during the halftime show, our neighbor shouts as loud as he can, "SHAKE YOUR ASSES!" at the cheerleaders, and my Dad gives him the WTF look and then nods in my direction.  Pretty funny in retrospect...

I have been a Michigan fan for as far back as I can remember.  Like many it was the helmets that sucked me in.  I was born in Michigan and one day I was watching football with my dad (tOSU fan).  Michigan was on and I told my dad I loved their helmets and since they were called Michigan which is where we lived I was going to root for them.  He wasn't real thrilled by this but I think he figured I would grow out of that and like OSU.  To this day I still love Michigan and to the point where it is almost unhealthy.  What is it about this team that demands such passion?

Whole class of little kids went... we were on the top row, don't remember which side but it was in one of the end zones. Don't even know which game.  I was just a little guy.  My teacher actually invented "Time Out".  A Michigan Fan!  Best pre-school/Kindergarten ever!  Was probably the first kid to ever get a "time out".  I remember it vividly.  I remember the game atmosphere.  This is in the early 70s.   Do well in a time out, get to go to a Michigan game!

I remember going in one of those huge tricked out vans in the early 70s and my first tailgate and pregame.  Just got back from Sea World with my plastic Great White shark.  It went to the game with me and was lost forever in the stands.

I remember being really little (not old enough to read the Michigan shirts my grandparents gave me yet) so I'm not sure what game I was watching with my dad, uncles and grandparents, but I was still not grasping the NCAA/NFL difference because the teams all had big people and was very confused that Michigan could not go to the Super Bowl.
