Your best and worst OSU gameday experience?

Submitted by MWW6T7 on
In the spirit that is Mich/OSU week, I was wondering what some of your best and worst gameday experiences of the past have been for the best rivalry in all of sports. I have only been to one game and that was 2006. It is definitely the worst gameday experience I have ever had. That late hit still stings today. But that is not the reason. I can take a bad loss pretty well. It devistates me for a bit but I am usually pretty rational about it. What made this day bad was the fans. It was just my wife and I attending and it was cold and we had on jackets so really the only thing visable where our Michigan knit hats. To start of , as we were driving in, a car full of students continuously pulled along side of us and cussed and swerved at us. I am cool with the swearing and bickering back and forth but do you really need to try and swerve at another vehicle? Then as we were walking to the game people kept tossing things at us and bumping into us. Now remember, I am with just my wife so I am kind of outnumbered here. I could understand if it were me and a bunch of drunken friends asking for it but it was ridiculous. I could handle it but felt sorry for my wife because she actually was scared a few times. All the women there were even trying to start fights with her. She is all of 110 lbs wet and 5'2" tall. All in all it was a bad fan experience but I guess I should have expected it. I have been to many games and many stadiums and heard my share of insults thrown at my teams but this one topped them all. I plan on visiting in 2011 to the next home game so hopefully I will have a good experience to share then. One that ends in a win to go along with this Saturday and next years!

Best: 100th game...The house was routy. TUOOS confident. 21-0 later the truth was revealed. I look everyday at the stadium photo from that day on my wall and hope that day will soon come again. Worst: Two years ago....I cant repeat it again...its too painful. See Recruits visiting for OSU board post.

2003 was the best I've been attendance for, seems a long way off for my last good experience in this rivalry. 2007 OSU was the worst game i've ever been to period. And i was at Appy St and Oregon that year as well. The weather was miserable. We had less than 100 yards of offense and even though the score was close we never even had a chance and Tressell knew it.

BEST - 2003. Rushing the field. Perry strutting around with a rose in his mouth. Being on the field after the game. 35-21. Amazing. WORST - As richarjo would know, being on the rowing team, we went down to Columbus, as they have a dual race with OSU morning of the game at the game site. One of the boats was racing, and dismantling OSU when it had beet bottles thrown at it from the bridges spanning the river. Real classy stuff.

2007, I got completely hammered. My idiot friend convinced me to go the party store at the corner of state and packard to buy a fifth of wild turkey to sneak into the stadium. Since I was completely trashed, I just put it in my coat pocket and entered the stadium 60 min early. Of course the cops caught me. Made me empty out the full bottle, wrote me a $125 ticket for illegal possession of alcohol on campus property, and kicked me out. My wife was pissed I didn't listen to her as she told me to not try to bring the booze in. I spent the next 3 hours sobering up as michigan was getting their ass kicked by Bennie Wells...worst day ever.

I was right there with you buddy! My buddies and I thought it wise to wake up and start tailgating at 2:30 AM. We spent Firday night at ABC... So after about 30 min of sleep, we were off to the tail gate! We called it the Stone Brewing tailgate because we each embarked on drinking a 22oz of each brew Stone makes -- that was 9 22ozers of 6-10% ABV beer. I passed out in a chair at 9 and woke up to go to the game. I had my trusty flask and was in no condition conceal it. Busted and repeat Wolverine318's experience. Lesson learned -- stick with light beer for tailgates and don't try to start at 2:30! Best is a tie between 1997 and 2003. I had my flask at both games and we won.

1997 was pretty awesome, does anyone else remember one of the frats on State Street with a wrecked car on the lawn charging a couple of bucks to whack the car with a sledge hammer. You were encouraged to strike the bullseye with the name "David Boston" in the center IIRC. I wish I still had my ticket stub, I attended the game with my dad, I'll never forget. 2002 The outcome of the game sucked but as a student reporter I spent the game on the field in the Shoe and the noise level and hysteria witnessed from field level is something I will never forget. Pretty impressive atmosphere. Being amidst the rush of the field was terrible as a Michigan fan but still made quite an impression on me (although I much preferred rushing the field in 2003 in Ann Arbor). EDIT: In 2003 I lost my keys while rushing the field, that sucked. Although a courteous fan (must have been a Michigan fan) turned them into the lost and found.

it was 1995.(my "bads" aren't all that bad just more annoying) my dad and i got to AA earlier than normal as we were going to head to the golf course to meet up with his friends for a tailgate. as we were crossing the street to the golf course a super drunk female OSU fan comes running up to me and asks me to "spell it", i ask spell what, she says "ohio", i look at her and tell her to fuck off. now we get into the game and we have 2 more loud mouth OSU fans sitting behind swearing up a storm because tim is just gashing them up and down the field. now what makes the 95 game so great is that those 2 loud mouth OSU fans had already bought and paid for there trip to pasadena for the rose bowl, fully thinking that OSU would win (cause they had to in order to go to the rose bowl). well they didn't and their trip was non refundable....

Best - 1997. Nuff said. Rushing the field afterwards was one of the greatest sports experiences of my life (second only to doing the same thing after the Rose Bowl). In fact, that whole season was the best (especially the party in President Bollinger's house after the Penn State game). Worst - don't really have any. When I was at Michigan, we didn't really lose to OSU in the Big House (as bad as we sometimes played against other teams). Oh, such wonderful days.

Worst: The game of the century #1 vs. #2. I was in a bar called Joey V's or some shit in GR. My "buddy" who I knew from college and hadn't seen since wanted to meet me there. He ordered at least 3 of those tall beer tube things. I got fuck faced. We lost. He "forgot his money" when it came time to pay the tab. I cabbed back and puked in my brothers basement until the morning light. Best: I can't even remember to be honest with you. I would say watching the Woodson punt return in my dad's basement when I was 14, but the details are hazy at best. Whatever is in charge of this circus of events we call life, please give me a new "best" this Saturday. My first live "The Game."

Best 1985. I was 6 and sitting with my grandparents and couldn't see Harbaugh's bomb to Kolesar, but the excitment hooked me for life. 1997. Freshman year at UM. Amazing overall experience. Worst 2005. My wife and I sat in some seats low in section 43 that her dad got and couldn't see the entire game because the of where they put the band. Every one was standing on the benches (literally everyone in the 25 rows ahead of us) but for some reason the people behind me thought it was all my fault and got the ushers to give me a hard time. Couldn't see the game, and in the end I guess it wasn't worth it. 2002. Went with my dad down to Columbus. They won, went undefeated, and our car was doused with beer and rocked as we tried to drive out of town. Not cool.

Worst experience is right with you except it was the '04 game in Columbus with my dad. It was my first OSU U of M game and it was bad...Braylon's drop still haunts my dreams on ocassion but this year will be my first true U of M OSU game and cannot wait!

Best: 2003 Game. It was my senior year at Michigan and we began tailgating the night before at 7p and stayed up all night drinking. Bad idea but at least I remember the game and after we won we rushed the field with everyone else. Worst: 2007 Game. Had high hopes for that game. But we lost and it was raining and cold. Not to mention my buddy painted his body for the game and he looked horrible at halftime so I have to convince him to put on his jacket.

That was a great 3 year run of going to each game. Timmy B's 313 yards to Tai Streets touchdown catch and topping it off with Woodson's performance in 1997. 1996 was especially memorable as we "accidently" left a buddy behind in Columbus.

Best Game: For me it's a tie between the 1985 game and the 1995 game. 1985 was the first OSU game my dad took me to see. It was almost like, "today you graduate and become a Michigan Man". Harbaugh hit Kolesar for a 67 yard TD pass to seal the win. 1995 is summed in one stat, 313 yards rushing. Worst Game: 2007 loss. Miserable weather. Miserable performance. Miserable. Watching Michigan truck Florida a month later just makes this game sting that much more because if Angry Michigan Position Hating God leaves us with a healthy Henne, we destroy OSU and this whole Tressel streak thing doesn't exist. Arrrggh!!!!

Best was 2003... 100th game... Largest crowd, Chris Perry, Fans rushing field for Rose Bowl berth. My friends and I decided we were driving to whatever bowl they went to... so it made the game that much more exciting knowing that we might be going to Pasadena. Worst was 2001... Just a putrid first half of football by Navarre against the Vest's first team, which was mediocre. The awful first half put us behind just enough to prevent the comeback. I remember feeling hopeless in the first half... knowing that it was too big of a hole. I hated feeling that way with so much football left. Felt like the game was gone before it had a chance to really unfold.

My worst UM-osu moment have been the last 5...Five in a row is just too much. My favorite moment came when I was in 5th grade in 1995 against the number 2 osu buckeyes with hiesman front runner eddie george, but a guy named Tshimanga Biakabutuka from UofM stole the show with a 313 yard effort! I miss the good ol days.

1995 was the best no questions asked, that was my first Michigan osu game that I was at. also the look on all the faces of the osu fans it was great. 2007 was bad, but to be honest every loss is the worst especially living in ohio

The only OSU game I've been to was 2 years ago as a freshman. It was pretty horrible given the weather and the loss, but there was an older couple in front of me and my friends that were handing out those hand warmers to everyone. They turned out to be really nice, since I was just a farm boy from california and of course didn't understand that people wear gloves when it is cold in michigan. Which made the game extra miserable.

When I was kid the 1983 game. My dad and I did not have tickets (he was a poor grad student) but we had a friend that worked the gates and he let us in. Back then the student section threw toliet paper after every Michigan score and towards the end of the game the field was full of it.

I live in SC so I only get to travel to AA once a year. I saw my first Michigan-Ohio State game in 2007 and it was awful. Like previously mentioned, awful weather and terrible performance. Not to mention, having to deal with all the Buckeye fans chanting "WE LOVE LLOYD!" over and over.

Best - 1997 - Friend had a birthday party during the game. The game was on in the background so we were checking in on it. He and I both looked at the screen as Woodson made his interception. We embraced and jumped up and down screaming like school girls Worst - 2007 - Went to the game with the same friend, along with others and my fiancee. It was cold and rainy and we couldn't move the ball for anything. A hand warmer broke and spilled everywhere. Sadly, this is the only time I have been able to go to an M vs. OSU game and I was really hoping for at least a fun game.

My last game as a student. OSU ranked 5th. We had already lost to ND and MSU, Wisconsin and Illinois. No contest. It was a beautiful day. And we went on to a 28-0 whitewash.

I never went to an OSU/UM game at the shoe, but I did date a girl who attended OSU for a year. I walked with her (wearing my Mich shirt of course) during her orientation. This was early or mid summer, but the pride of OSU was on campus. While I never endured the common "f michigan", I was told many times that I was stupid. Remember, this was summer. Middle of the day. Everyone was sober (well, this was OH-IO so maybe not). I had was my Mich shirt on, she had her OSU shirt. I thought we looked like the espn commercial, and since there was no impending game I thought it was all in good fun. I imagined I was going to get some looks, or some minor ribbing. I remember one grad student aged kid walked by without making eye contact muttered "hope you get your ass kicked". The worst, however, was the older man (I have no idea if he was a professor, another student's dad, janitor, or truck driver strolling the campus), probably in his 40s or early 50s, came right up to me and with a scowl said "you should be shot in the head and killed". In all seriousness, in all hate, and walked away. I should be killed execution style. I didn't respond, I couldn't really. It was a true wtf moment. The very next day I snuck (or sneaked for u grammar nazis) into the shoe, and relieved myself on their field. They wanted to be #1 that year, so I gave them #1. I have a picture of it even, best pic of my life.

1995 - 1st OSU game, sat at the 50 yard line, 50 rows up and enjoyed every one of the 313 yards with my Buckeye born and raised wife of one year. 2005 - Took my 5 year old son and 8 year old daughter to their 1st Michigan game that just so happened to be against the Buckeye's. The 3 drunk a-hole OSU fans behind us uttered every swear word known to man, and I had to about knock their teeth out as I reminded them that directly in front of them were two children. The guy next to me with his young son left. To make matters worse, we punted from the OSU 33 in the 4th. My wife was so angry, she got rid of all her OSU stuff and now roots for M.

Best: 1)1997....sitting in the north end zone with all my old roommates and my dad, who flew in from California. Woodson's return might have been THE most exciting moment of Michigan football for me. 2) 1985. I can still see that pass leaving Harbs hands and Kolesar catching it. 3) 1986. Thank you Matt Franz. I'm wearing my Big 10/Rose Bowl ring right now as I type this. HAHAHA! Worst 1) 2007. Quite possibly the most uninspiring game I've been to (in horrible weather, to boot). I cut short my hunting trip with all the old roommates to drive to A2 for that piece of shit. 2)1987. Earl Bruce's last game. My last game (although I was on crutches from a knee injury from the week prior). We were beating their ass in the first half, only to lose. They carried EB off OUR GODDAMN FIELD. 3) 1984. My first OSU experience. We lost. It sucked.

Best had to be 1997. I was only 11 but I still remember most of the details of being at that game. I remember begging my dad afterward to rush the field and him refusing (for obvious reasons) and the PA announcer trying to clear the field so Michigan could receive the Big Ten title trophy. Great to see Eric Maye's get the trophy on crutches. Worst would be last year. My last UofM football game as an undergrad. A bunch of friends got student tickets and decided to make a weekend out of it. Friday night sucked as the parties were pretty bad. Did you know everyone wear's their football gear out to parties on Friday night. Pretty interesting. Then on the way to the game we were heckled in every way imaginable including having full cans of beer lobbed at us off a 30 foot balcony. We all know how the game turned out with the best part being an almost pick 6 and winning the blood battle. To top it all off on the way home my car broke down. Ohio sucks.

Only because that is the one OSU-MICH game I have seen in person and MICH also won that day. 2008 - Worst. I watched by myself and was just depressed. On another note, I just looked at the recent results of The Game and I didn't realize tOSU only won 3 times between 1985-2000. Damn I miss the good ole' days.

At the 2005 game, my 6-year-old son and I had seats on the east side, near the northern 10 or 20 yard line, in the first few rows. We were behind some risers on the field, which were, I believe, set aside for the OSU band. Because the lower rows are so shallow and because our view was partially obstructed, everyone had to stand. A couple of guys in front of me, Michigan fans, were standing on their seats. I asked them to step down from the seats so my son could see. There was no hope of him seeing anything otherwise. They gruffly refused. A guy next to me tried to help, tugging on the elbow of one of the guys standing on the seats and saying, "c'mon, get down so the kid can see." The stander swung his elbow away, inadvertently (I think) hitting me pretty hard in the mouth. My son started crying because he thought I was about to get in a fight. Then the guy who elbowed me offered to put my son on his shoulders. Like . . sure. I got my son calmed down and took him out of the section. We ended up standing at the top of one of the ramps in the south end zone, behind the handicapped seating. And then Michigan blew the lead . . .

Worst So many to choose from. The Tressel era has been painful, them #1, us #2 and losing, the one after Bo's passing. Bruce's last victory. But I think I would go back to the 70s, when I was but a wee lad, and the stakes were higher: Rose Bowl or nothing. I still remember Mike Lantry missing a couple of key FGs in different years. In 1973 both teams were undefeated, and the game was a 10-10 tie. The Big Ten voted them to go to the Rose Bowl. Best The bomb to Kolesar, Desmond Howard, 1997. Aside from the 70s when we beat them to go to the Rose Bowl, got to give a shout out to John Cooper. So many times they were highly ranked, and we upset them. 1993, they were undefeated, and we shut them out 28-0. 1995, they're #2, Biakabutuka romps for 313 yds. 31-23. 1996, again they're #2. Griese replaced Dreisbach and led a 2nd half comeback to win 13-9.

Best: 1991. Helloooooo, Heisman. Also, watching the scarlet and gray fans migrate through the exits at the beginning of the fourth quarter was something I thought I would never see at a UM/OSU game. I stood at the top of the stadium and watched them trudge out the gates. It was pure heaven. I thought it was going to be that way forever.

best: 2003. i was a senior, and we rushed the field. worst: 2006. it was a rough finish to a great season. it was also difficult to listen to urban meyer cry his way in the bcs nc game after that. (ironically, the last time there was a rematch in the nc after the teams played in the regular season was florida/fsu in 96-97, where florida lost the reg season game and won the nc).

Best: 1997. How could it be anything else? Worst: 1992. We were really freakin' good that year; didn't lose a game. However, we tied ND (after severely outplaying them in South Bend), Illinois at home (the one let-down performance you could always expect from a Bo/Mo team), and...at OSU. We were favored. They grew the grass about 3 inches tall b/c we could really run (DA, Wheatley, etc.) and Mo went into his 1971-esque conservative shell, as he typically did against the Buckeyes. Best & Worst: 1992 Basketball Regional Finals. Fab Five freshman year. OSU was Big Ten champions led by Jimmy Jackson, Lawrence Funderburke, and Chris Jent. Game was at Rupp Arena. It was essentially an OSU home game. Michigan section went from behind our bench to only half-way up the upper deck, so we were surrounded by Buckeye fans. Got hit in the back with a wad of chaw just before tip off. Game was nip and tuck. Got to OT. Webber posterized Jent. Cut down nets. Talk mad shit to Buckeye fans as they file out past us. For all the fans who want to fight other fans for no other reason than b/c they cheer for another team, you need to be struck down from above with some affliction that renders it impossible for you to leave your home.

My best experience was when I got a ticket for free on gameday. 2007, my freshman year, i didn't buy student tickets because I had applied to michigan based only on academics and when ticket purchasing came along i wasn't even aware that michigan had a football team. Eventually i learned my lesson and attended every home game but was unable to find a ticket for osu that wasn't 150 dollars. On gameday i accompanied my season-ticket holding friends down from north campus to enjoy the gameday atmosphere and maybe find a reasonably priced ticket. I had 120 dollars on me and was willing to spend it on an OSU ticket, but everyone would not sell for less than 150. We walked all the way down to the north west gate and i was about to head somewhere to watch the game by myself, but then there was a guy trying to sell his ticket right in front of the game. A very nice bike cop came over and told him he can't sell them and he might as well give it away. Two older gentlemen tried to get it, but it was a student ticket so i told him h e was better off giving it to me, and he did. There was much rejoicing amongst us and some nice older OSU fans congratulated me. Worst experience was being at the 2008 game. No explanation needed.

The best was 1977, my first. They totally outplayed us, but we scored TD's when they only scored field goals. And Woody punched a camera man. It was beautiful. The worst was 1982. We were favored. We lost. The first and only time I went to game in the cesspool of Columbus.

Being not too old yet and having been an out-of-stater, I don't have a big sample size, but here goes. Best: 2003. Senior year. 100th Game. Outright Big 10 title (in a year where things weren't looking too good in the second half against Minnesota). Great game (we jumped out to a big lead before OSU made a strong comeback, then Chris Perry put the game on ice). Braylon breaking a tackle over the middle and taking it to the house is still one of my favorite UM plays/memories. Worst: 2006. Living in LA, I drop over a grand on a pair of tickets. Fly into Detroit on Friday afternoon (all flights into Ohio were ridiculously expensive). Meet my buddy at the airport who is flying in from Colorado. Pick up rental car and drive to AA where we hit Charlie's and Ashley's before beginning 5 hour drive toward Columbus (it starts to go downhill after this). Have to stop in a dirty Wal-Mart in ohio because my buddy got his toiletries confiscated at airport security. Trash talking begins (though at least the Wal-Mart buckeyes didn't drop any F-bombs that I can recall). Arrive at ratty roadside hotel about 45 minutes outside Columbus after midnight. Loser working the night-shift continues trash talking. Stop at McDonald's in parking lot where apparently they just double the meat on whatever you order (there is nothing grosser than unexpectedly getting a quadruple cheeseburger from MickyD's, no wonder those people down there are so fat). Try to sleep but stay up most of the night thinking about the game. Up early and head to Columbus for Gameday. Regularly threatened with violence while truckers and dorks dressed up as professional wrestlers shout obscenities. Begin drinking heavily. Almost piss my pants because they close the gate we are about to enter so that the buckeye band can take the field. Take our seats next to two inbred mongoloids who shout, "Break his fucking ankle!" every time Mike Hart carries the ball. Lose game in heartbreaking fashion (I still dream about getting the ball back for one last drive). Begin long ass drive back to Detroit for early morning flight on Sunday (after getting lost trying to find our rental car). 2007 was pretty crappy from a game standpoint, but my buddy's tailgate had one of those ice luge things so doing shots all morning helped to numb the pain/cold, and being a dirty old man at Scorekeepers after the game was lots of fun too. In 2006 the only real bright spot was getting to hang out with Amadou Ba (SEE avatar).

My fourth year in the MMB and hadn't been to a Rose Bowl yet (a birthright back then). Band used to leave early when in Columbus so the busses didn't get rolled. They're trying to hustle us out, but I knelt just outside the back corner of the north end zone to watch OSU last-ditch FG attempt. It looked good on the way ... then hooked in front of the left upright. NO GOOD! WE'RE GOING TO PASADENA! LET'S GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE! Felt like we had to run a mile to the busses, but we didn't care, jumping up and down and screaming. Got back to A2 around 11, partied until about 5. Good times...

My first and only OSU game in-person. It was absolutely miserable, from the lousy weather, to the OSU fans at the stadium and in my section, to the play on the field. Normally a score of 14-3 doesn't seem like a blowout; on that day, it was. Michigan could do absolutely zero on offense, and Beanie Wells had himself a career day. A woman in her 60s, chanting "O-H, I-O" over and over, didn't even break stride when I told her to stop after several minutes and inserted a "Fuck you" or two in the chant. Some assholes in the Pioneer parking lot offered to write in the score of the game on the back of my 2007 season shirt. My brother had given me the ticket as an early Christmas present - I literally jumped up and down when he handed me the ticket the week before The Game and said "Merry Christmas."
