Yost student section officially named Children of Yost

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Well, there it is.

The athletic department has officially recognized the student section at Yost Ice Arena as the Children of Yost, similarly to the Maize Rage being an official thing.

They're getting adidas t-shirts and the official Michigan Hockey account tweeted it

The old farts always hated the CYA chant, let's be real. I worked at a department and had to put up with a secretary who kept telling me ashamed she was. I didn't give a damn obviously, but it was before "c-sucker." Then in 03-04 the band was put on the tiny pedestal area across from the students, and the CYA chant was done a 2nd time after the song had finished every penalty, with the addition of "Band you suck" at the end. Then they started refraining until after CYA was done I'm surprised the current student section doesn't turn on the band in a similar way, but pricing and basketball popularity has made the section dwindle to the point they have no leverage I returned to a game in 2012 and was dismayed at how pathetic the yost crowd has become. As much as i disapprove of "c-sucker" and never partook in that myself, they still freaking do it AND the experience there has been ruined So i hope my former coworker is happy now

I wonder how this will go over given Yost's less-than-stellar reputation when it comes to race relations. See: http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/excellent-article-president-ford-willis-war…. Then again, we celebrate plenty of people who were racist, and we don't do it for that reason of course. Naming the student section after him is an interesting decision that I really have no opinion on.

Yost changed

Ward recalled his first trip to Chicago with the team in 1932. At the time, black players usually stayed with local families because the pricier hotels still did not accept black guests. Sure enough, when the team tried to check in, the hotel manager told Yost they did not admit blacks, and they weren’t about to start now. According to Ward, Yost became outraged.
“‘We’ve been staying at this hotel since 1900,’” Ward recalled Yost saying, “‘and we’ll pull every [Michigan] team and I’ll get other Big Ten teams to not stay here!’”
The angry appeal to their financial interest was enough to desegregate the hotel for one night. Ward became only the second African-American to stay in the hotel, the first being the singer Marian Anderson.
There are other examples of Yost’s surprising change of heart from his racist past. He successfully lobbied to get black track star DeHart Hubbard into the university; he volunteered his influence and field house to support an athletic exhibition to raise funds for the Dunbar Center, a local organization that promoted social betterment for African-Americans; and he started Benny Friedman, a practicing Jew, at quarterback in the mid-1920s, then helped him become athletic director at Brandeis University.

I'm assuming there is some selective revisionist history here that makes it easier to idolize the folk we wish to be our heroes. With that said, I don't much blame man for for being ignorant, and I do think one of the greatest things a man can do is change. I hope these stories are representative of a real change in Yost. I'd like my UM heroes to fit that image we have for them

i'm guessing you don't approve of say hulk hogan's comments that he wouldn't want his daughter marrying a black guy. Well you think yost would've, despite the progress he made in trying to accommodate his own athletes? He probably would disown her Btw, that anecdote about the hotel stay would be a lot more compelling if they didn't go on to play georgia tech and leave ward behind AFTER that incident. He could've reacted that way to the hotel out of stubbornness as much as anything

Back under Brandon's admin, I never wanted COY to become an official thing because I assumed that it would end up getting coopted in negative ways.  I'm still a little nervous about this taming the crowd, but then I'm old enough to have been part of old, angry Yost so I don't feel as connected with new, happyfun Yost anyhow, so if this is what they want, more power to them.  In the end, I trust a Hackett AD to not mess with it too much - hopefully his successors will also be trustworthy.

I think my objection is sort of along these lines--the thing that was so great about it was that it never had any kind of formal organization. Things happened organically. You started going to games your freshman year, you figured out the cheers, and then saw what happened from there. Then you'd be the ones passing it down to the newbies around you the next year.

When a small part of the group started calling themselves the CoY, got a twitter feed (which they used to do things like pick fights with other fans, and even call out Brian a few times in pretty mean-spirited ways), and started to act like a subset of the student section that was doing things differently from everyone else, that magic started to erode.

I know it's passe to say Yost isn't as cool anymore, but for a lot of reasons, including the student section, it just isn't. I think this is a step in the wrong direction.

Spent two decades going to games in the old barn, and she ain't what she used to be. But, whatever. Not my call.

During my freshman orientation, the PC police obnoxiously told us that we couldn't call female students girls...we HAD to call them women.

Now the University is referring to it's students as Children?!

The one downside to losing Dave Brandon was that was our one shot at ever naming it the Molly McGannon Memorial Student Section. If we'd raised the funds this could have totally happened. The dream is dead.

I didn't realize that there was an issue with Yost. Should we also rename the Washington monument because he owned slaves? It was a different time and I doubt that he would be the same way if he lived in today's era.

My pals actually started the children of yost...I think in 2009? They are long time readers and not posters, so I'll rep them from here.

I don't think the student section needs a name and CoY is kinda lame. Perhaps it's also because the 'CoY' moniker starting showing up right when the student sectioin started petering out...

The student section has essential won the back and forth with the AD regarding them controlling what goes on. They're collaborating and taking input and doing things like this, but other than that, it's still fully dictated by the students.
