Yost Cheer Quesion - Woop woop?
Let me start by saying I am not a noob to Yost, I've attended every home game for several years. There is one cheer that I am confused by and still don't necessarily understand the significance of - that is when some students go "woop, woop, woop..." as the other team brings the puck up the ice (generally during their power play). Brian mentioned this at one point (complaining about the misuse) but I haven't been able to find the post. Can anyone clarify?

but the students near the band do it when we're forechecking on the PP kill.

I think it started last year against BU when everyone really liked yelling Yip and it got changed over to Woop. Around me, we do it when the opposing team is trying to breakout on a power play until they get to the red line.

haha...I thought it was an imitation of the sound a gopher would make...it really sounds like prairie dogs sounding the alarm
We were wondering about that on Friday night, glad to know what it means!

but I went to a game against BU either last year or the year before, and at the end of a UM blowout, the fans started chanting "Go staht the cah!" and "We want chowdah!." It was hilarious, and even got the visiting parents, coaches and players laughing. I also do remember the Yip's, but I have no idea what the origins of the "woops" are.

If I'm not mistaken, it doesn't derive from the Yip actually. The Yip was due to a player on the other team being named Yip, thus when he was handling the puck there were Yips being yelled. This comes, I believe, from an opposing coach who would make that noise during the power play on the breakout to signal a certain breakout from their zone. The students, upon hearing that noise (I want to say against Miami Ohio), proceeded to make it in an obnoxious cheer that is fun to do.
That's just what I think the story is, but I don't know. I can tell you I have had season tickets since 1996, and the cheer started about 3 or 4 years ago, and it is definitly not from the Yip.

It was definitely started last year, and I only remember it starting after the BU game, so I assume it just came from that.

And I remember it starting during the Miami game. I definitely never heard it before last year though

and I don't remember it happening before last year. Not saying you're wrong, but I thought it started last season at some point.

It's new. I went to my first game in a couple years a few weeks ago and I didn't know why they did that, but it's just to mess with the other team's heads and screw em up.

I think it's like a warning siren - "WARNING - PUCK IN OWN ZONE ON PP - WARNING" WOOP WOOOP
