Yahoo thinks we draw Nebraska

Submitted by 1464 on

Yahoo seems to think we will get a head start on our new in-conference Rivals. Seems Michigan always finds a way to draw a tough bowl game... Maybe there can be some backback for 'JUST LATERAL THE DAMN BALL!!!'

And a chance for RR to get a big win. But, I think they're wrong. Nebraska will win the Big XII and be heading about a 1/2 hour away to the Fiesta Bowl. Even if they do lose, I'd be surprised if the Cotton Bowl and the Alamo Bowl both pass on them.

The Cotton Bowl wouln't want the Huskers back in Dallas right after the Big XII game.

The Alamo probably takes Arizona and won't want a rematch of last year's Holiday Bowl.

Both teams could do a lot worse. Just don't know if we'd be treated to a Robinson-Martinez matchup, Taylor's been sidelined with a high ankle sprain and turf toe and not playing much.

in the Big 12 Championship game.  Quite a difference if you believe it.  Who knows, maybe a "screw the departing Nebraska" plays a role.

I'm not so sure, and I say Go B10 in the B12 Champ game!

So, Nebraska will be the #4?  They are most likely going to the Big 12 Championship so how can they finish any worse than #2?  They have OSU higher in the Big 12 even though OU will more than likely be representing the Big12 south in the championship game, and oh yeah, OSU has the same record where Nebraska owns the tiebreak.  I think it would be an interesting matchup, but do not see their logic in having Nebraska that low.

Yahoo honestly thinks that, even if Nebraska loses the Big XII championship, that two additional Big XII teams get picked before them?  Who?  I guess I could see Oklahoma State based on their ranking and record, but Nebraska would definitely get picked before Mizzou and Texas A&M.

let's say the the cornf'kers (yes, that is what we called them during my tour of duty at OU) lose the Big12 title game, I can see only OU, the winner of that game, and O State being ahead of Nebraska in the selection of Big 12 bowl teams.

If we go to the insight bowl, I think that we see either A&M or Mizzou.

I don't get why you have Illinois going ahead of Michigan.  They will likely both finish 7-5 and UM beat Illinois.  They will be one game better in the conference, but that doesn't seem like a compelling reason for a bowl to take Illinois, especially when you consider that UM historically travels well and seems likely to draw better TV ratings.

Also, I think people seem to have a misunderstanding of how the Gator Bowl / Insight Bowl picks go.  They share the #4 and #5 pick.  They both submit their choice to the Big Ten and if they choose the same team, there is a coin toss to see who gets the team.  (got this all from mvictors).  So, assuming UM is solidly the fifth pick, both the bowls will probably pick PSU (or Iowa if PSU goes Outback).  So it's literally a coin toss as to whether Michigan goes to the Gator or Insight.

and breaking ties with my personal thoughts. Assuming a win over Fresno St., they will be on a two game winning streak, while Michigan....not so much. I sorta hedged my bet by saying I wouldn't be surprised to see Michigan pass Illinois or Iowa. I think a lot will depend on the RR situation. If there's an interim/dead duck situation, there's no way they rise above the Texas Bowl, IME. If Michigan were still scoring like they were earlier in the season, I would have bumped them due to excitement level, but 27, 28, and 7 over the last three might not be as attractive as Illinois.

Maybe the B12 leadership is going to undercut Nebraska and stuff them in the Insight Bowl way below where they should be, but otherwise they either beat Oklahoma in the B12 Championship and end up in the Fiesta Bowl or lose and end up in the Cotton Bowl. Assuming no B12 shenanigans, we will play Oklahoma State (10-2), Missouri (10-2) or Texas A&M (9-3).

I don't have a whole lot of knowledge about the inner-workings of the bowl selection process, but it was my impression that the bowls themselves make the call and not the conference leadership.  Perhaps I am wrong?

And entertaining as hell from an offensive standpoint. Baylor's coach and RR are pretty good offensive minds and Robert Griffin III and DRob are the fastest QBs in the country. Both defenses would not have fun that game. Final score would be in the 40s at the very least.

That would be a good match-up.  A tough one for us, but I'd like to see how we do against another good defense.  That would mean we played 3 of the top 10 scoring defenses.  What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Yes Baylor's D is pretty craptastic.

#89 in PPG allowed: 30 ppg avg

#73 rushing D: 160 ypg avg

#114 pass D: 267 ypg avg

#99 total D: 427 ypg allowed

We'd likely roll Baylor for 700yds and put up 60 points but we've done that to enough crap teams over the past few seasons.  Let's try to finally beat a solid team.  I know this is a case where I should probably be careful of what I wish for but if we could somehow beat Nebraska it would really change the mood during the off-season, particularly if there was reason to expect the defense to be much improved (ie, new DC and decision to play a 4-3 rather than 3-3-5).

Best team we can get. What do we look like if we don't have the Offensive mistakes against a good team? Chance for a "signature" win, though I loathe the term. Beat a good team, it changes the retain/fire math, especially if we finally put it together on Offense. Lose again, in the same mistake-filled way... maybe that progress really is a mirage

Another thing to consider is that the team usually does well at the start of the season when they've had plenty of time to prepare and Rich Rod has a history of having his teams ready to go for Bowl games.  So this could be a good situation where we face a good opponent and are able to prepare specifically for that opponent and improve our chances of getting a big, impressive win.

Destroying a crap team would be much less enjoyable than going up against a good opponent with the potential to win that game and get momentum going during the offseason for next year.  We'd definitely get that opportunity if we play Nebraska, Okie St, Mizzou or the Aggies.  I'd prefer Nebraska although OSU would probably be a great game.

who have to be at work on the 29th at 7 am, a 10 pm start is not exactly enticing.   Please let some bowl with a sane starting time grab Michigan before the Insight can.

both Michigan and Nebraska would nix the idea of playing each other in a bowl game.

That doesn't make sense for either school given the new conference affiliation of Nebraska next year.
