Y U No Go to Bowl Game?

Submitted by allinforM on

Angelique tweeted earlier tonight that Michigan had sold 5,500 tickets out of its 11,000 allotment for the BW3 Bowl, and that we "donated" back the rest. Curious as to why people aren't going, if they have gone in the past? Price? Distance? Less-prestigious bowl?

If I'm going to plan an expensive last minute trip to a bowl game, it better be a big game.  This is not.  Also a rare late December weekend where the Friday before and the Monday after are work days for many of us.

Plus StubHub drives ticket prices way down.

on the field. I hate to disparage the team but the games were just so hard to watch this year. Travelling to see them play just didn't seem worth it, especially with the work that I have to get done over break.

Unless you live in Arizona, it's a really far trip to watch the conclusion of a bad season. Even from populated West Coast cities, it's quite a hike.

I'm not surprised.

for KSU. If they beat Michigan they will gain much more notoriety than Michigan beating KSU. Also, it will help with their recruiting. Up until now KSU has had to rely on JUCO players. I win over Michigan will a lot of attention from good high school players.

I suspect KSU fans will be there in great numbers.

I would love to go and take my three kids.  Too expensive for 5 people.  Too far to drive.  Bowl season is very unkind to those of us living in most Big 10 states.

Also, you are asking on a blog where there have been multiple threads on why, how, and when they are dropping their season tickets.  No way those people are going to support the team at a bowl game, which is way more pricey than any PSD.  Maybe they will save their season ticket $$ and attend next year.

I love the Phoenix area and had fun at the Sugar Bowl a couple of years back.  Normally a flight to Phoenix is cheap but not around this game. When I went to the Sugar Bowl I was able to use frequent flyer miles and even buying airline tickets was not bad then (<$450).

Also I learned to never buy the University tickets for a bowl game as you can get them much cheaper through other channels. I stupidly bought Sugar Bowl tickets from Michigan and then significantly upgraded my seats for about 1/5th the price I paid for my  "official" tickets from Michigan.

Doesn't seem worth the money this year. Someday we'll go no matter what the bowl game. This year we'd rather take our son back to Disney in March.

Just not worth it IMO. Would much rather watch it in the comfort of my own home. Kansas St is not a team I'd fly across the country to see us play. Especially in the Copper Bowl

Not a good bowl game. Neither team is ranked. Highly likely Michigan will be starting a true freshman at QB behind an Oline that has trouble keeping the QB clean. It's not an in-state bowl or really close. It's on Christmas holiday weekend. That should be enough reasons.

Travel all the way to Arizona to see two mediocre teams in a low tier bowl game? With airfare (for most of us) you're probably looking at a trip in the $500-1000 range to see this. Not happenin

Another data point showing that the bowl games are ho-hum and the whole system is overinflated. Nobody gives a crap about two 7-5 teams playing in the desert. Not even us

$500-1000? Ha. No way. You're looking at about $1000-2000 easily once you factor in hotels, transportation, even the cheapo tickets.

I'm surprised how little I care about this thing. I was talking to someone yesterday and they asked me who Michigan was playing. I honestly had to think about it.

After a while, you begin to realize that unless it's the Rose Bowl or one of the other BCS-tier games, or if the matchup is noteworthy or compelling (M-Nebraska in the Alamo, for instance), these things really do not matter. At all. Hell, the MDen hasn't even bothered selling more than about two pieces of bowl crap for the non-BCS games in about ten years. Used to be any old bowl game got the full merchandising, which is why our tree has a whole section of bowl ornaments. Not anymore. The novelty is gone, and full cynicism has set in.

Long story short, no one gives a crap about a bowl sponsored by chicken wings. It doesn't make you a bad fan. It merely makes you a realistic football fan in 2013.

I will watch this year's game, probably a DVR version (spending time in the northwoods with no satellite/cable on game day). But I'm on board with Bando. 2nd tier bowl games mean little to me. I'll cheer while watching the tape-delay version of this game, but I don't have that nervous, gut-wrenching anticipatory feeling compared to past "big" bowl appearances. This year's bowl is the equivalent of our bowl game with Miss. St. a few years back, and I can't honestly remember what bowl game that was. I wish these dreadful bowl games would just go away. The only bonus is extra organized practice time.

As others have said, it's way too expensive. Being a college student, I'm not wasting my money going down to Arizona. Even if it is to watch the Wolverines.

I just moved to Seattle this summer. Moving to the west coast was really healthy for my overall fandom. No more ruined days because we lost. The game's over by noon/3pm. I am still (relatively) sober, and can get over it and go do something productive.

And maybe because of that, I am not emotionally exhausted by the season and am really excited to go see my first bowl game. Got great seats on the 50yd line for a reasonable price and hotels look pretty reasonable too. So, I am leaving tomorrow and driving my way down to Tempe with the wife over the next week. Should be a fun trip!

Trust me, I'd go. But I don't have the money for tickets, flight, hotel, food/drink/gear. I rather my first Michigan bowl game to be the Rose Bowl, anyways.

Maui with my wife in Feb. and Disney with the kids in April...no budget left for this bowl. At least I don't walk out of Disney World feeling disgusted and angry like I did on the last couple Rose Bowl trips....oh wait.
