Y U No Go to Bowl Game?
Angelique tweeted earlier tonight that Michigan had sold 5,500 tickets out of its 11,000 allotment for the BW3 Bowl, and that we "donated" back the rest. Curious as to why people aren't going, if they have gone in the past? Price? Distance? Less-prestigious bowl?

I've been to a bowl once in my life. I want to go, but it's hard to make happen.
My only bowl experience was the 78th Rose Bowl in 1992. We lost but it was wonderful!

I am driving from LA, and I got my tix on stubhub, so I don't know if it would count against the UM allotment. Buying tix through mgoblue.com doesn't let you see where the seats are...just the price level. So, for an extra $15, I got tix on stubhub and picked out my seats. Not saying it's a big game, but there are little things the school could do (like let you pick your seats!!!) to increase that ticket count.

Because we are playing in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.

It doesn't surprise me that people aren't going. If you wanted a kick in the soul dong, you can just stay local and watch the Lions. Way cheaper.

over the holidays and you're from Chicago? Make sure you have all your kids, you never know what kind of mischief they can get into when home alone.

Crappy Bowl. Crappy Opponent. Crappy Date. Crappy Start Time. The real question is why are 5500 people going? I expected more like 55. After shelling out $4200 for my season tickets, I'll stay at home and watch this embarrassment for free. And if we win, that Crappy Trophy better not see the light of day in Schembechler Hall. Embarrassment to the program. And it only gets worse with the new bowl tie-ins starting next year. Better get this program back to where it belongs. Fast.

Who are we playing and where?
December 21st, 2013 at 4:03 PM ^
Considering your lack of knowledge about who Michigan is playing, perhaps you should remove the "we" from your question and simply ask where Michigan's team is playing. You are clearly not a part of the equation.

Other than go to the Copper Bowl? I mean at least if the bowl game is in Florida, you've got the ocean...

The date of the game is a problem - it's too close to Christmas and we're talking about three weeks' notice to make this trip. If it were on New Year's, it'd probably be easier for people to travel.

I was single then. I'm married now. That pretty much settles it for any future bowl games...

I went to the Y2K Orange Bowl and the 2004 Rose Bowl (2003 season). By far, the best experience of any road game I've ever had was the Rose Bowl, despite losing to USC.

I'm just going to be bunkered down here in Iowa, on the live blog, getting hammered and alienating the house packed with family visiting. I checked air fare just now, and it is $1K R/T from Des Moines to PHX on Southwest...grim. I would have a free place to stay because my sister/bro-in-law have a place in Scottsdale, but I can't squeeze anything out of my budget this late notice (read, lack of strategic planning).
To make up for my lack of participation in the bowl game, I am saving for the Final Four ;)

Honestly, its just not worth the money to go to this game. It sounds bad, but its true. At least from my perspective, any BCS bowl is worth going to and a few others. Going to bowl games costs me a lot of money since I don't live anywhere near them, so I have to pick and choose which ones I want to go to, and this one just isn't one that is worth going to.

I mean...?
Are you...taking a facile survey for an oblivious athletic department?
The team is 7-5, has a losing conference record, finished second to last in our division, and came very close to actually not even qualifying for a bowl game with close scrapes against Akron, UConn, and Northwestern.
Meanwhile, the University is gouging season ticket holders while offering poor schedules with inconsistent efforts on the field.
If you're going to the bowl game, that's awesome. Great weather, should be a good game, and I'm hoping for a dominating M performance to take us into 2014.
However, most teams with the issues this program currently faces don't have fan bases battling to follow them across the country. That's just reality.

For the cost of airfare, hotel, game tickets, plus other entertainment, you could just about buy a season ticket at Michigan Stadium. Perhaps Brandon will take notice of the lessened enthusaism here, even if it hasn't trickled down to Michigan Stadium yet.
December 21st, 2013 at 2:38 PM ^
Going to bowl games has always been a somewhat expensive proposition in total. What's changed is that the cost of season tickets has risen so dramatically over the past decade that an average fan might start having to make a cold calculation of what he can afford beyond the cost of season tix. For those fans who aren't suite occupants in David Brandon's tax bracket, going to bowl games other than marquee matchups in upper-tier games could drop off the radar.

If you're going to take one and only one vacation, you can currently fly to the Cayman Islands for about a hundred bucks less per person than Phoenix (leaving from Detroit). If we're talking Pasadena or maybe the Orange Bowl or Sugar Bowl that's one thing, but BWW Bowl vs. scuba diving and bikinis? I know where I'd be.

to see this matchup. Michigan is mediocre and quite frankly, not that exciting to watch this season. I'm having a hard time adjusting back to manball in general. KSU is mediocre. I hate traveling during the holidays. I'd rather stay home and fall asleep during halftime on my couch. Man, am I a curmudgeon or what?!
December 21st, 2013 at 6:52 PM ^
I have never gone to a bowl game so I shouldn't talk, but the fact it is not really near anything of interest to me, right after Christmas, and still really expensive for what will be a pretty mediocre experience, kind of makes it difficult for me to justify flying out there.

but raise you one Bluebonnet bowl, circa 1981. We were preseason #1 and went 8-3. Can you imagine the meltdown had there been the Internet?? Also, Bluebonnet bowl stupid for name alone.

Now they are ~800 each just for flight. It's a week away so they will be high but have always been high. A cheaper flight and I would go. It's not that I just would have to pay a flight for myself but also for another person and talk a couple friends into paying that much to go.
