WTKA: Basketball Recruiting updates

Submitted by benjamin on
Today's Recruiting Roundup on WTKA was pretty informative for hoops fans. Sam Webb reassures us that we are still very much in the mix for Trey Zeigler. He mentioned that TZ has been on campus twice in the last month. Jon Horford came up, as Beilein went to see him again this Monday. Still no mention of an offer for him. Hmmm. Sam mentions that Michigan is in on another big (7'1") that is playing at a prep school in NJ for 2010. Mat Piotrowski- he is another under-the-radar guy. He has been getting interest from Stanford. Mark from Novi asked about Marshall Plumlee. Long story short, we are still in on him even though we might not get mentioned too frequently in articles. Check them out to get the full report. Positive news is a little hard to come by these days. I have to believe if he is coming to see the team play Iowa and Penn State he is interested. Not exactly marquee matchups. I think we'd all feel a lot better about the direction of the program if Beilein could close the deal on this one.

Agreed. Not that this class will be considered a bust without him (I'm really excited about both Smotrycz and Hardaway), but add in Ziegler and you're instantly poised to be a Big Ten contender once again.

Good to hear we are still in the mix for Trey; if our recent performances haven't scared him off we have a real legit shot. Here is my theory on why Horford hasn't been offered yet: We only have 2 more scholarships to offer for next year (as long as Manny stays) and one will be held for Trey until he makes a decision. If we take both Trey and Horford this year, we will only have one more schollie the following year with Brundidge on board already. I think they would really like to use that schollie on Amir Williams (same AAU team as Brundidge and new football recruit/possible bball walk-on Conway). However, since Michigan is still in the fray for Plumlee, Williams, they couldn't take both if they take Horford (and Trey) this year. If Trey goes elsewhere I'm sure Horford will be offered. I think in the end we will end up taking Horford this year since odds of us getting two 4* bigs the following year are pretty slim to start with. Plus this team needs size and fast, Horford could see spot duty his first year. We would just have a skimpy class next year with Brundidge and one other player.
