WTF: The Iron D revealed, Michigan-MSU hockey trophy

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

We were right when we were laughing at the idea of this stupid thing when it was announced a week ago.

Michigan will play sparty for this........thing............every time they play in the annual game in Detroit.

For those who are wondering, the "trophy" is the whole beast. The anvil IS the trophy base.

The third party design team posted it on their Instagram.

WHY?

What did they do, drive around Detroit collecting debris and weld it all together?

What is with the cent symbol with and extra vertical line, and hanging by a wire?

Like many of the buildings in Detroit, this trophy should be condemned.

And it's for ONE game in a sport where the teams meet a guaranteed 4 times a year and could meet up to 7 times.

Also a game that existed without a name or a logo for almost a quarter century until last year.

"I know what Detroit is! It's anvils, stains and hammers and stuff!"

There is another aspect of it that is utterly ridiculous, and that is its weight. This thing has to weigh 100 lbs. I wouldn't want to carry the thing on solid land let alone on skates on ice. It looks too massive and I can envision bad things happening.

“We always love coming to play at The Joe,” said Michigan head coach Red Berenson in the release. “A lot of our players grew up watching the Red Wings and watching Michigan play Michigan State. It’s a big thrill for them, it’s a big thrill for the coaches, and our fans love it as well. And now having a trophy emblematic of this game and this competition will be terrific.

The "cent symbol" is the logo for the Detroit Design Center. See this. There's no way that'll be part of the trophy. The D is certainly part of it, but according to this, the "Detroit skyline and the new Detroit Events Center (future home of the Red Wings) will be highlighted at the base of the trophy." I think Nordin Brothers was showing what the "Iron D" looks like but without it attached to the actual base of the trophy. (EDIT: The first link gives a rough idea of what the finished trophy will look like, including the skyline at the base of the trophy.)
