Although it seems weird, with how basketball players compete nationally at such a young age it is not outrageous to rank basketball players at young ages.  Rankings are usually based on skill level over physical traits.  Per usual, the rankings should be taken with grains of salt.  I remember Damon Harges being the number one ranked 6th grader in the nation a few years back.  Now as a high school freshman he has thus far gotten fars from small D1 programs, while some of his peers have received big program interest.

Among other things, this is a little weird to me because my daughter is only one year younger than, oh, "the class of 2023", and that in combination with the news today that Rivals is now setting up recuiting pages for sixth graders for football makes me believe that recruiting and rankings - well, certain aspects of them anyway - may have finally begun its approach to the ramp which will lead to jumping the shark.

but back in my day, SI had the nerve to say some kid named Chris Webber was the top 8th grader in America.  The same article said a kid from Bedford, IN, was the top 9th grader.  Turns our that Webber kid and Damon Bailey were pretty alright.  The latter broke the state of IN high school scoring record.

I still won't ever understand how they make claims like that for people so young and with so much growing to do.  Doesn't seem right.

This is great, useful info!  Now I can go to all their middle school games and be their biggest fan and offer them stuff like rides and candy, and then when they're professional superstars, they'll like totally do me favors and give me monies to show their gratitude!

But seriously, they better have a strict srcreening process for people that apply to do this type of scouting work.

If our 2023 class is ranked #1 in recruiting ratings for the next eight years, then irrespective of what actually happens on the court, that's basically equivalent to a national championship, right?

I can just imagine a dude filming a kids game by himself, a dad asking him why, not believing he's a college scout, and then beating him senseless because he thinks he's a pervert.

Then again, of course people would flip out over Lebrons kid.

has it been since there was that thread where Brian bitched out people for taking shots at recruits that looked young? If memory serves me right there were like 300+ replies.

this is not new in basketball. I used follow basketball ranking really close and even back when I was in high school (class of 2000) I would see rankings for 5th/ 6th graders in NY

My one year old just learned to walk and my wife is tall.  One time he pulled a heavy kettlebell few inches.  Is there some sort of list I can compare him against?

Do you think he's getting dinged due to his lack of exposure? He hasn't camped yet, but there's soccer at his daycare.

He has yet to verbal because he's preverbal.

Alabama has offererd but it's noncommitable.

Harbaugh should have the team well in the playoffs mix! I think it will be expanded from 4 to 8 teams. Urbs will be stressed out and leave in 2022 after Harbaugh has beaten him 6 straight seasons.

When Harbaugh gets all these top athletes in the class of 2023, I will retire when they are Juniors and get to watch them at home and on the road!

I guess for basketball anyway.

Things like this have been done in other sports/competitions for ages. I have a neice that's been a nationally ranked gymnast for a couple years and she's not even 10. I have another younger cousin not even in high school with MLB teams already trying to contact him and I'm sure it's no different for any other good little leaguer. Tennis players get ranked from the time they're 12 pretty much. On the extreme end, other countries recruit kids that young to put them in schools for their sport.

While it is a little weird to me overall, it's not really anything new overall I don't think.
