Wright State 5th Year Transfer Julius Mays (6'2 guard) lists interest in Michigan

http://www.umhoops.com/2012/05/03/report-fifth-year-transfer-julius-mays-listing-michigan-among-others/#disqus_thread

"Julius Mays, a 6-foot-2 guard at Wright State who averaged 14.1 points this past season, announced he’ll go elsewhere and be able to play immediately for his final campaign.

Mays told CBSSports.com that his initial list consists of Purdue, Michigan State, Kentucky, Cincinnati and possibly Michigan."

Have an open spot that's not going anywhere- and won't take up space in later classes.  Could use another guard- not sure this has any real downside- but don't know much more about him.  Are there any other 5th year guys with UM interest?

Mixed emotions on this possibility.  I'd love to have an experienced back up for Trey, which will be severly lacking next season.  However, I'd also like to see Spike get more reps behind Trey so that he's a much better prepared to be a reliable back up to Walton for the 2013/14 season.

And I apologize for the disgusting amount of implied assumptions I just made there.  Regardless, I guess I'm an instant gratification kinda guy, so I say what the hell, let's get 'em!

Spike will always be a back-up.  Not sure it matters too much if it improves our chances next year.  He'll get practice experience against top players- yeah game experience matters- but not sure it matters enough for Spike to lose some (or all) next year if it means a better chance at Final Four just so we have a very marginally better prepared back up for the next three years.

It's tough to say that Spike will "always be a back-up."  You never know what can happen.  He might either have to play due to injuries, or he might eventually crack the starting lineup over time as an upperclassman.

I just don't ever like hearing things like "always be a back-up," especially before the kid even makes it to campus.  Besides, you never know how long Walton will stay.  He may be an early-entry as well, and we definitely don't know who our future PG options will be after him.

Absolutely no doubt that a player like this would provide a significant upgrade to the team - at backup PG and also probably  playing some off-guard beside Burke.    Albrecht can red-shirt and isn't on the same level talent-wise or experience-wise.

HOWEVER, I don't think he's coming to Michigan given that Burke will be ahead of him.  He'll probably have better opportunities elsewhere.

As a Wright State alum and a lifelong Michigan fan, I'd be happy to see an ex-WSU player to go to Michigan. He is finishing up school and can transfer without sitting out, so could provide some depth off the bench. He's also considering going pro in Europe, but am hoping for a transfer to Michigan. I don't blame him for leaving Wright State, they are a very young team that I don't see being tops in the Horizon League next year (even though Butler is leaving).

Not sure if Mays would want to spend his 5th year as Burke's backup.  Meanwhile, according to the article linked below in UM Hoops last week we look very strong with Caris Levert and a commitment could come very soon after today's visit.  Either or both would be great pick ups.

I had never heard of Julius Mays before today. He started out his college career with the NC State Wolfpack, played two seasons with them before transferring to Wright State. Definitely a talented kid and could help M out at both guard spots. Will be interesting to see how vigorous Beilein is in pursuit of Mays.
