Wrestling takes down #6 Ohio State in Columbus

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

In a dual that was shown on BTN before Hockey's win over MSU, #13 Michigan Wrestling (6-1, 2-0 B1G) traveled to take on #6 Ohio State at St. John Arena.

OSU won the national championship last season.

It started out pretty back and forth with both sides trading victories in matches. Consecutive victories by Michigan at 149 and 157 gave Michigan a 9-6 lead, but OSU took 5 points in the 165 match via tech fall to take an 11-9 lead.

The momentum changer came in the next match at 174lbs, when Michigan's #19 Devonte Mahomes upset OSU's #15 ranked Myles Martin. Mahomes prevailed in a sudden-victory OT period, winning 3-1 via takedown.

When the match finished up, Mahomes flexed which drew boos from the crowd of 4,300+ and then he raised his arms up and down while standing on the OSU logo in the middle of the mat, egging the crowd on further.

It was all Michigan from that point on. Michigan took the final 3 matches to upset #6 Ohio State, 21-11.

Michigan has now won its last two duals at St. John Arena.

Fantastic dual. Ref was a homer. Brutal on stalling calls. Coach McFarland was going nuts after only one match as Tomasello was backing up for 1:30 in the 3rd period but he called one on Youtsey. Called Mahomes for stalling when he as standing in the middle of the mat. I thought Dom had 2 different 2 NF and the Ref never called it. Great win overall!

Impressed most with Youtsey even with the loss. He hasn't been performing well all year, this was a huge match to get back on track.

Bruno at 133 also has kind of struggled this year. He beat the #8 ranked wrestler and looked really sharp. Solid wrestling for all Wolverines today. Wasn't close at all.
