Wrestling gets ANOTHER upset win, 17-16 over #7 Nebraska

After a tough defeat to #1 PSU, the defending NCAA Champions this past Sunday on senior day, Michigan had to get over it quickly due to the rest of their schedule STILL being against top-10 squads.

The #11 Wolverine grapplers pulled off their FIFTH win over a Top-15 ranked team tonight, defeating #7 Nebraska in Lincoln in a thrilling finish. Once again, it came down to the heavyweight phenom Adam Coon.

So can some wrestling people help me out here?  It looks like to win the Big Ten (well a share), Michigan would need Minnesota to beat Penn State and Michigan needs to win on the road at Iowa.  Both of these seem unlikely to me, but can someone who follows wrestling better tell me if those are possible?  From what I can tell Penn State seems incredibly talented, but with a win Minnesota would win a share of the Big Ten title, so it doesn't seem incredibly unlikely.  However, winning at Iowa seems tough.  Can someone enlighten me as to the best possible realist scenario?

I don't know much about it either, but that looks right to me.  On a related note, holy crap, the Big Ten is strong in wrestling!  The top 3 teams in the nation are all in the Big Ten, as are 4 of the top 10, 7 of the top 15, and 10 of the top 25.  The only unranked Big Ten teams are Indiana and Sparty.  The fact that we are even reasonably competitive in this conference is danged impressive.

There just isn't competition from top to bottom that produces talent like there is in the B1G. Year after year, there are plenty of other standout programs that consistently rank highly but as far as conference strength, the B1G is untouchable especially when legendary coaches such as Cael Sanderson (PSU), the Brands brothers (Iowa), J Robinson (MINN), Barry Davis (WISC), to name a few are running programs. The first three listed all have multiple national titles to their names and will accumulate more.

UM can't hang w PSU right now. They're in the midst of a dynasty - 3 straight NCs- and that doesn't look to be slowing down. UM either this year or next year (don't remember off the top of my head) brought in the consensus #1 recruiting class and is recruiting on a truly elite level, led by the replacement of former asst. coaches w current coaches pritzlaff and bormet (sp?). In terms of beating Iowa at Iowa, I mean there's a chance but that is one of, if not THE, crucible of college wrestling (imagine Crisler filling to capacity to watch a wrestling match, every match of the season) and you'll get an idea of how serious Iowa is. Their team is badass, they're coaches are nothing but business and it'd be extremely difficult to walk outta there w a win but not impossible. UM has the parts in place to make a serious run at a B1G title and an NC in the next few years w elite recruiting, the return from redshirt of Taylor Massa, and competition level in the room increasing significantly (ex. multi-year starter and NCAA qualifier Sean Boyle was beaten out by freshman youtsey in the challenge matches to determine the starting lineup this year). We're not gonna win a title this year is the short answer but hopefully this clarifies the situation a little better. The future is bright, we're just not there yet.

Besides Coon, #2 overall recruit, they also had #4 Ben Whitford, Murphy, Abounader, Fisher, Hayden, and Kennedy. But Ben did not qualify academically so he's at smaller college right now, but not wrestling. If he did, he'd lose a year. I think everyone believes he'll try and qualify and go D1. I hope it's Michigan. He's best friends with Massa. But no one knows for certain.

When these studs get a little more seasoned, then I see them pushing Iowa and Penn State. Will they win? Possible. But those two teams recruit as well or better than Michigan.

Michigan lost the Heald much in the last 20s. And the Abounader match in the last 20s to go to OT. And that kid hit a TD with 5s left. Throw in Salazar pushing the #1 Green to the limit it could have been michigan winning 8 matches. Even Grajales was up for a bit. They're wrestling tough at the right time of the year. Bodes well for the Big Tens and NCAA.
