Would you rather have Rashan Gary or Jaylen Brown?

Obviously we'd like to have both but if you had to choose one or the other which one would you choose. I'd choose Gary because we'd get him for 3 years as opposed to 1 year of Brown.

It is a tough question because, as you point out, Gary would be here for multiple years while Brown would likely only be here for one year.  On the other hand, you only have five players on a BBall court at a time while you have offense, defense, & special times in football.  On a "per player" basis, Brown would have a much greater impact.  I'd love both but I think I'd go with Brown.

Seriously though,

How is this even a question?

There is absolutely no relationship between Gary or Jaylen committing. Why put up such arbitrary question? It would be worth asking if they were going after the same position in same sport or we only had one scholarship left and we can only take one. That I can understand.

I want both. Everybody wants both. There is no question.

I agree the question could be phrased better, but to me, the question is essentially "Considering their impact on the team, the positions and sports they play and the likely longevities of their college careers, do you think Gary or Brown would have a larger impact on his respective program?"  The responses don't have to be negative (although some will likely take that approach) nor does it have to be a "zero sum reasoning".

I would say Brown, because one player can make all the difference in basketball, whereas it is harder for one player -- especially a lineman -- to have the same impact in football.

Either one would be fine, though.

An elite player on the basketball court as a lot more of an impact than an elite football player. Only 5 guys on the floor at a time as opposed to 11. Plus he'd player a larger portion of the game. No comparison, really.

Plenty of other fish in the sea for football. And talented one's at that. We don't get these type of elite prospects interested in us for basketball very often. Brown easily for me.

brown, no doubt...but if there was an andrew luck-type qb prospect out there, then i'd take the star qb over hoops

Gary. We've been struggling in football recently, and even with Harbaugh at the helm, I think a lot of recruits are afraid to join a team that's in transition. Having a top recruit join us will signify that there is trust in harbaugh. That will hopefully translate into recruits who are currently 'on the fence' to turn Blue.

It's so funny to me when you are the only one with a DV in a thread-- it proves Dave Brandon does in fact have an account.

I'll say Gary, since he'll be here for at least three years and I'd prefer to be great at football again, whereas I don't think Beilein needs Brown to have a really good team. Either would be great.

Gary. Basketball will be fine regardless; I'd love Brown to come but my expectations are high either way. Gary would be a huuuuuge recruiting win against the top dogs of football. No way landing him doesn't have a domino effect. He would be the anchor of a program-changing class. The potential gain is way, way bigger. But let's get both and really have a good year.

Gary. We need elite line play badly. It's been way too long. And I'm pretty stoked about our backcourt for next year already. IF YOURE READING JAYLEN WE ARE SO THIN IN THE BACKCOURT!

Brown is a 3/small forward, correct?  Wouldn't he be splitting time with Zak Irvin?  I doubt he would start over Irvin.  Would he replace Chatman?  Am I crazy for thinking Brown, as a true freshmen, would not be THAT big an increase in talent from the players we have?

I care more about football than basketball and it's also true that Gary will be here longer.  But the thing is, one Defensive Tackle is not going to be able to make the kind of impact on the field that a single basketball player can make on the court.  That's just the nature of the two games.  One guy can have such a huge impact on a basketball team, and this is especially true of next year's team simply because of their enormous potential.  A Michigan team with Jaylen Brown is a serious national title contender.  I hope he ends up in Ann Arbor.

I disagree. A top notch defensive tackle commands double teams, frees up linebackers, and allows for blitzing to be more effective. You ask any coach what the most important battle is within a football game they will say the trenches. You look at the last several teams to win the NCAA title, they had a strong presence on the defensive line and won the battle of the trenches more often than not.

Look at Suh.  The best DT and arguably the best player in the NFL.  Does he make the Lions a championship team?? Or how about the Dolphins now??

Now take the best player in the NBA (James, Harden, Steph Curry ) They all make their teams instant championship contenders.  A single player has a much greater impact in basketball because there are only 5 players on the court and you play both ways, offense and defense
