BOTH!!!! :D

It is a tough question because, as you point out, Gary would be here for multiple years while Brown would likely only be here for one year. On the other hand, you only have five players on a BBall court at a time while you have offense, defense, & special times in football. On a "per player" basis, Brown would have a much greater impact. I'd love both but I think I'd go with Brown.

Seriously though,
How is this even a question?
There is absolutely no relationship between Gary or Jaylen committing. Why put up such arbitrary question? It would be worth asking if they were going after the same position in same sport or we only had one scholarship left and we can only take one. That I can understand.
I want both. Everybody wants both. There is no question.

lol, wow did this question send you over the edge.
The question invites people here to say things about the recruits that can be seen as "negative" if they or their friends happen to read them. Any question involving current high school recruits and zero sum "reasoning"should be banned.

I agree the question could be phrased better, but to me, the question is essentially "Considering their impact on the team, the positions and sports they play and the likely longevities of their college careers, do you think Gary or Brown would have a larger impact on his respective program?" The responses don't have to be negative (although some will likely take that approach) nor does it have to be a "zero sum reasoning".

Which would you choose...?
Better if you leave these players out and make it a truly hypothetical question...
April 28th, 2015 at 12:03 PM ^
Yes, this.
So simple, yet so difficult for some to wrap their head around it.
5 play at a time in bball (10-12 total), 24 (O-D-ST) in Football (50-60 total?).
#1 BB will have a bigger impact.. its math.
April 29th, 2015 at 11:49 AM ^
How does the longevity in the program factor in? Basketball can be one and done, while football is 3 years minimum.

I would say Brown, because one player can make all the difference in basketball, whereas it is harder for one player -- especially a lineman -- to have the same impact in football.
Either one would be fine, though.
I think logically you win. However, love clouds logic. I love football more. Gary if we can only have 1.

An elite player on the basketball court as a lot more of an impact than an elite football player. Only 5 guys on the floor at a time as opposed to 11. Plus he'd player a larger portion of the game. No comparison, really.

I'd take Brown. He would have more impact on the game as one of five starters vs. one of twenty-two.

Give me both.

Plenty of other fish in the sea for football. And talented one's at that. We don't get these type of elite prospects interested in us for basketball very often. Brown easily for me.

but I sure would like an egg-salad sandwich.

Brown. Although it would be nice to get the Harbaugh era truly going by landing the #1 overall recruit. Let's just go get both.

brown probably would have more impact as an indvidiaul, but our football team needs all the help it can get.

It's so funny to me when you are the only one with a DV in a thread-- it proves Dave Brandon does in fact have an account.

I'll say Gary, since he'll be here for at least three years and I'd prefer to be great at football again, whereas I don't think Beilein needs Brown to have a really good team. Either would be great.

Brown is a 3/small forward, correct? Wouldn't he be splitting time with Zak Irvin? I doubt he would start over Irvin. Would he replace Chatman? Am I crazy for thinking Brown, as a true freshmen, would not be THAT big an increase in talent from the players we have?
April 28th, 2015 at 12:02 AM ^
Yes, Are you High? I would take Brown over Chatman any day! I think you should go watch some hightight tapes of Jaylen before you truely make that statement.

I care more about football than basketball and it's also true that Gary will be here longer. But the thing is, one Defensive Tackle is not going to be able to make the kind of impact on the field that a single basketball player can make on the court. That's just the nature of the two games. One guy can have such a huge impact on a basketball team, and this is especially true of next year's team simply because of their enormous potential. A Michigan team with Jaylen Brown is a serious national title contender. I hope he ends up in Ann Arbor.

Look at Suh. The best DT and arguably the best player in the NFL. Does he make the Lions a championship team?? Or how about the Dolphins now??
Now take the best player in the NBA (James, Harden, Steph Curry ) They all make their teams instant championship contenders. A single player has a much greater impact in basketball because there are only 5 players on the court and you play both ways, offense and defense
