Would you rather have Michigan win a National Title in football or basketball?

Submitted by Gil From Omaha on

The title says it all. Which would you rather have happen? I'd say basketball for myself because they've been so close 2 and 3 years ago. Michigan football has been bad while I've been alive (first game I remember watching is 2005 alamo bowl), so it can only go up especially with Harbaugh. Plus, Beilein isn't getting any younger. Go Blue!

Football would be great... But after going through the depths of hell as a longtime Michigan basketball fan, including a full four years of student tickets during the Amaker years without a single tourney appearance, a NC in basketball would probably be the most satisfying thing in all of Michigan fandom for me.

Basketball is harder to do, but I'd rather have football, and it's not even close. Save for a few schools like Kentucky, football is the ultimate measuring stick in this country in regards to collegiate athletic success, whether it's right or not. Football is king in America, and especially after the last decade of hell Michigan football has endured, it would make a national title in that sport all the sweeter.

In basketball nearly all the top 25 major conference teams before the season will end up making the tourament meaning they will have a shot to win it all even after a regular season where they lost 25-30% of their overall games. In the CBB tournament teams also get easier draws also. If there's an upset in a region a team might end up having to beat the 24th ranked team (a #6 seed) in the elite eight, the 12th ranked team (a #4 seed) in the final four and the 5th ranked team (a #2 seed) in the title game.

In football there's a chance a one loss team is out of the post-season playoffs (11-1 record means you lost only 8% of regular season games). In a typical football Michigan football season they'd need to be at least 10-1 going into the Ohio State game and then comes the hard part IMO as they'd have to go 4-0 to win it all and those last four games would means wins over Ohio State, a win in the Big Ten championship game and then having to beat 2 of the top 4 teams in the country at the end of the year. There's a good chance that those four wins would come against the #2, #5, #6 and #13 teams, which is what Ohio State did last season (counting their win over MSU instead of their win over Michigan).

Nope. Even with a playoff, OSU needed a small group of decision-makers to annoint them more deserving than TCU and Baylor in the 11th hour for them to strut their stuff. In basketball, every team that could win a national championship and every team that could realistically be better than a giant for just one day are thrown into the same pot. If/when football goes to eight teams, things might be different.

I'll join the 99% in echoing football, no question.

Also the first football game you remember was in 2005?? That makes me feel old and the first game I remember was Tim Biakabatuka running wild over Ohio state in 1995.

I don't understand why the recent few years of subpar football would make a basketball championship more exciting. I love that basketball has finally recovered from the Ed Martin sanctions and that NC run was fun, but a National Championship in football blows away basketball. Blows it away by a long shot.

It would almost be more meaningful to the fanbase now because of 2008-2014.

Since most of us will pick football if we can only choose 1 may I propose an alternate question?

Would you rather have a national championship in football or national championshipS in MBB, Men's Hockey, and a 3rd sport of your choosing?

Which is fellow bloggers, quality or quantity?

For S & G's feel free to include your 3rd sport if you go for quantity.

My answer to my own question would be quality 3 out of every 10 years and quantity the other 7 years with the 3rd sport varying on a year by year basis.

It's for the very reason that football has been so far from its goal that I would be much more ecstatic were the team to win a national championship.  That is not to say that I wouldn't be overjoyed if basketball won, but football holds much more weight in this case.

Football easily all day everyday. Not a big basketball fan (I do enjoy seeing Michigan have success in the sport though), it's just not for me. It has always bothered me when it was glaringly obvious that there were two sets of rules on the court. Whenever I would watch a game and see that bs start up, I'd either change the channel or leave the room entirely.

This is a very tough call for me. Normally I would say football, but because we have only won 1 NC all time in basketball, I think we need that 2nd one badly.

I am so sick of MSU fans and that ass/hat prick Mike Valenti claiming they have multiple NCs all time in both major sports whiole we only have 1 which is absolutely unaccetable. That asshat Valenti also claims we only have a half NC since World War II when we won an NC in 1947 and 1948 and World War 2 ended in September 1945. So sick of all the asshat MSU fans rubbing it on pour noses and enjoying our misery it makes my blood boil so much.

We get another NC in basketball, and MSU can no longer make that claim of being one of the only few schools to have one multiple titles in both FB and BB, even though they overstate their FB NCs in the 1950s and 1960s

But to put it simply, the answer is I want an NC badly in both the next 5-10 years to shut up all those MSU fansand say they have had more success in the modern era of college football than Michigan and rub it in our noses about how they won multiple NCs in the 1950s and 1960s and we only won 1 as if the modern era somehow began only in the 1950s.

So sick of the Spartans and Mark Hollis, Mark Dantonio, and Tom Izzo should be despised and spat on by any true Michigan fan if they were ever seen in public. They are the #1 enemies of major Michigan atheltics and it is not close!!!

I have one slappy friend who rags on Michigan football for that very reason, then brags about the 6 titles they have in the 50s and 60s like it was just yesterday. Umm, it was 50 and 60 years ago, not exactly recent. When you accept them for what they are; a sad, pathetic fanbase, whom cant stop their strange obsession over trying to get us to hate them more than OSU, you will feel better and probably just laugh at them.

Yeah and it is so annoying. And they are wrong stating they have won 6 NCs in the 50s and 60s. They won more like 2 shared and 1 outright for a total of 3. The others they claim were like one minor poll voting them in which was like 1/5 of a title at best. If that were the case, than Michigan can claim NCs in the 1970s and 1980s under Bo, but we do not.

After my typical post on hating all things MSU, I must say I cant say anything other than football without a straight face. Football is our thing, period.

This one gets asked every August, it seems, and my answer never changes - if I had to choose just one, then it is football. Ideally, it would be both, but football has the more storied tradition and hopefully we're on the way to seeing that restored in a huge way under Harbaugh. Actually, some of the things that I remember being great growing up - at least culturally - seem to already be back.

Football in a landslide for me. Not even close.

My question is, would you rather have a national championship in football for Michigan or a Super Bowl win for your favorite NFL team?

I know the OP was serious and I understand his perspective, but for 93% of UM Nation...this isn't a serious question. Love JB and UM BB...but Football. Easy.

Football. It would mean we are extending our lead in being the #1 winner of college football games. Yay baby.

Football NC or Basketball NC : FOOTBALL!

Football NC or BasketBall NC & Hockey NC : FOOTBALL!

Football NC or BasketBall NC & Hockey NC & every other sport at Michigan NC  : FOOTBALL!

See a pattern? I love Michigan and whether it's women's softball, or soccer, or water polo or track and field, or baseball, or curling, if we had it, I'll watch it and cheer for Michigan, but for me it's Michigan football more than all of the others combined including every other professional or amateur sport and it isn't even close.

Go Blue! Beat OSU!

Football, and it's not even a close margin. It's not because I don't care about basketball; I love Michigan basketball. I just love Michigan football that much more.
