Would you be in favor of M Football playing a game @ Comerica Park?

I was just thinking about this the other day when I was watching illinois vs northwestern at Wrigley. Would you be in favor of Michigan playing a game at Comerica Park in the future? And if so, who would you want them to face?

NIMBY?

Are you by chance an environmentalist or environmental lawyer?

FWIW...

... NIMBY is a general term used for any time a community doesn't want something built in their neighborhood.  For example, a prison, a strip club, a nuclear reactor.  Though it was first used to describe the introduction of heavy industry such as chemicals, it really has little to do with environmentalism and everything to do with expected effect on property value and safety.

Exactly! Whats the point?

No reason!!!! Its not like the historic value that comes with Wrigley Field or Fenway. Its local so why not just play at the Big House. Obviously substantially smaller. If you're talking about playing on baseball fields (like ND playing at Yankee Stadium) its different. You're trying to reach out to your alums in other parts of the country. That would make sense if we did Yankee Stadium or whatever it is replaced Giants Stadium but not in Detroit.

I meant in the future in late September or early October.

I think a good opponent would be northwestern. You'd have that detroit-area vs chicago-area game going.

why, for the love of god, would you abandon one of the most iconic stadiums in the country (and 74k seats, or roughly $6M in revenue) to go play in a modern baseball park 40 miles down the road????

No. 1. Ryan Field/Memorial

No.

1. Ryan Field/Memorial Stadium =/= The Big House.

2. Comerica =/= Wrigley.

Northwestern wants to host us at Wrigley? I'll go. But home games should never be played anywhere but the corner of Stadium and Main.

Rather see them play at the old Ned Skeldon stadium in Toledo

where the Mud Hens used to play. The outfield fence was wall to wall with local business ads, parking was free, and the beer was cheap. I loved that old dump.

I love Michigan Stadium games more than anything. Just a suggestion. I'd like to see Michigan maybe play at Yankee Stadium someday because they use to play Army and Navy there back in the 40s and 50s.

used to hold the record for most football games hosted by a stadium. It took until 2003 for the record to be broken.

Big House or nowhere (except when Michigan is away - other teams can cram their fans into whatever they please, so long as we play on a regulation field, unlike Wrigley).

Attendance

NW v Illini attendance actually went up in the Wrigley game.

The last time they played at NW, 32k people came. At Wrigley, they had 41k. That's over 25% larger attendance WHEN THEY MOVED THE GAME TO A BASEBALL FIELD.

Find me a baseball stadium that seats 150k and we'll talk.

also, it was ridiculous when they could only play in one direction

I think Ford FIeld would be

I think Ford FIeld would be nice for Detroit, but honestly, most teams play at a pro field because it's a step up and a cool experience for the teams involved. Problem is, no pro fields trump the Big House.

Maybe if they still had old

Maybe if they still had old Tiger Stadium, and that's just a MAYBE, because of the historical significance. But Comerica? Nah.

Didn't both of those teams always have to go the same direction because the field was too short? I play at MIS and have a crowd of 300k.

This was just to see what you guys would think. I guess I should have left my crazy thoughts in my head. I am also kind of surprised at the fact that Michigan has not played a game in Detroit in 110 years. 11/2/1901 against Carlisle, won 22-0.

North Korea?

Michigan-Michigan State played in the largest stadium in the world, anyone?  Sure, its in North Korea but what the heck?  Isn't Michigan football important enough to risk our lives and soverignty to attend?

North Korea Road Trip?

This would create an interesting dilemma for me. I wonder if my wife would like to make it a family vacation and she can take the kids on a tour of repression and abject poverty while I go to the Michigan game.

I wouldn't mind having

I wouldn't mind having michigan play at comerica if it was an already scheduled away game and a team like eastern, western, etc used it as their home stadium. I would never want to play a home game there though.

Also, when Northwestern played their home game at wrigley they were moving a a stadium (park) that has more tradition. Unlike NW, the stadium with the most tradition in the state of michigan is the big house, so why move?

Not in any reality-based scenario where winged helmets exist

will I desire to see Michigan play at Comerica Park.

If you are referring to something similar to what Northwestern did last season...did you SEE that fiasco?  That was the dumbest stunt ever attempted by someone from the B1G not wearing a bow tie or living in C-Bus.

Why play a game 40 miles from the best stadium in America when you don't have to.

Horrible idea!  Next?

if its an away game for a shitty opponent, a la msu vs whoever they played at Ford Field last year or indiana moving a home game vs PSU to maryland. that way it wouldn't count as a home game but we would get to go.

Maybe this has been pointed out already

but it makes no financial sense to play a game in a 40,000 seat facility when there is a 60,000 seat facility literally 30 yards across the street.

Only if some shmuck team wants to give up their home game to play at Ford Field or Comerica.  Even then it makes no sense when Michigan can probably offer them a better deal to play at Michigan Stadium.

I could see playing Northwestern at Soldier Field or IU/Purdue at Lucas Oil someday if they want to give up thier home field, but our friends in East Lansing have already pointed out what a bad idea playing a bad opponent in a neutral site really can be with the MSU game at Ford Field last year.

Big House

We play at one of the greatest venues in sports, in front of the largest crowd.  Other than a road game, why would we ever want to play anywhere else?

Also, I don't love this new trend in CFB about playing all of these neutral site games at pro stadiums.  One of the things I like about college football is that the games take place right on campus - brings that college atmosphere to the games.  There is something cool about walking into another team's campus and taking on their team (or having them come to your campus).

I looked at this thread title

I looked at this thread title since it was posted thinking "I'm not even clicking on that it's such a dumb idea."  Then I saw that it had a lot of replies and I thought maybe there was discussion back and forth on the issue, so I clicked on the thread intending to tell the board why this was a dumb idea.

As it turns out, the thread simply had 75 people saying exactly what I was thinking.

But yeah, dumb idea, bro.

No, Da Bears and Da Bulls proved how futile that was

We've seen that before with Da Bears and Da Bulls....

But seriously, Michigan Stadium is an unique venue, so playing football away from there for a home game really isn't a plus. (1) There is no game history like there was in the Chicago game where once in the past, games were regularly held - back in the heyday of Red Grange, didn't Illinois play at Soldier Field? (2) The place isn't superior in its own history...Michigan Stadium trumps Comerica park easily....

If the Big 10 were to add a East Coast team, and the game were held at Yankee Stadium, yes, I could see that - that stadium has also quite a long history, not exactly the house that Ruth built, but still a storied place.

Comerica is a subpar venue for everything but baseball. Kid Rock even plays better in other places.  I would be up for Ford Field for the 2016 Big 10 Championship.

Idea

The only reason would be to get around the Big Ten all getting to share any home game cash. I'd be down only if it's part of a great swindle in which we stage some catastrophe at CoPark* so that Michigan is forced to move the game to another time and venue, which ends up being noon at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, which I hear is quite a nice facility for handling football crowds.

That is the only scenario where I'd be down.

* Or just have the Tigers need to play a World Series game that day. Oh darn.

This would be a nonstarter for a home game for reasons given above. I'll try to convert this into a potentially interesting question: are there any potential nonconference opponents who would agree to a "neutral site" game at a site much closer to our campus than theirs? Mid-majors would not have enough clout to get a game anywhere but Ann Arbor, and power programs would be able to insist on a home-and-home or a real neutral site. That leaves lower-drawing BCS teams that would have to be close enough to make it a reasonable day trip for their fans to get up to southeast Michigan. Maybe Louisville or Cincinnati would agree to this. I'm not sure Kentucky or Vanderbilt would.

Is there a need to?

NW and Ill are in a situation where it makes sense for them to do that. The only way I would want Michigan to play at Comerica or Ford is if it counts as a Spartan home game. We have an iconic stadium. We fill the seats at every home game. Our alumni and fan base is massive. IMO...no.

No way.  That is a gimmicky thing to do for programs that need to drum up more hype.  That would be an MSU thing to do.  We don't need extra hype for our program.  Besides, why would we pass up 110,000 tickets sold at the Big House in exchange for 40,000 tickets at Comerica.  Silly idea.

Moving the UConn game

Moving the UConn game may be more likely than you think.  Moving the game would give UConn more revenue and U-M more exposure than playing at Storrs in a 40K seat stadium.

I remember reading that there is a buyout clause in the U-M / UConn contract.  The revenue from additional home game for U-M would more than pay for the buyout.  Dave Brandon could use that as leverage to "encourage" UConn to move the game to Yankee Stadium or the Meadowlands to their mutual benefit.

Well, under certain conditions

Well, under certain conditions

1)  Guaranteed gate of $10 million to Michigan.

2)  Counted as an away game for Michigan, so we play eight games in Ann Arbor, one at Ford Field, and three elsewhere.

3)  Better yet, a "home and away" in Ann Arbor and Detroit with Alabama or Florida or USC, or MSU or ND.

However, since I don't see any of these conditions ever being agreed to, no, I would never want a game at Ford Field.

Hell Nawl not a good idea

Hell Nawl not a good idea that area of downtown is not equipped for madness that would ensure crowd would ne too big traffic would be a nightmare and comerica just seems too small to host a college team with the following Michigan has it would be like the Superbowl depending on who the opponent would be. Dam I love Michigan GO BLUE

No

You have the greatest stadium in all of football in Ann Arbor. Why would you move it to a smaller less electronic environment

If Indiana sells a home game

If Indiana sells a home game to play at Comerica like they sort of did against Penn St, then I'm all for it. Otherwise, Dave Brandon thinks playing good teams out of conference is a bad idea. This is much, much worse.

Only if it were an away game.

I would like to move the Alabama and UConn games to Comerica Park or Ford Field or better yet, the Big House.

The replies to this thread

are far more vicious and hilarious than I thought they would be.  The sarcasm level of all MGoPosters has improved considerably in recent months.

Tiger Stadium

Now you find a way to raise Tiger Stadium from the rubble, and then you may just have a good idea....  Only other stadium, other than the Big House where I got goosbumps when I walked in and saw the field.  But even with that scenario, it is still a bad idea to hold a Michigan home game at a Baseball field.

They should play here

They should play here instead:

And props to anyone who knows here "here" is....

Maybe a basketball game

It would be a fun venue for a basketball game, if Michigan could bring in a Kentucky or maybe Louisville. That would be worth the trip into Detroit, and would obviously be more likely to sell out than the Big House. I'm not sure how much that would help Detroit recruiting(if at all) but I dont think it could hurt. It would be pretty cool to play a non-conference game against state there in a year the big ten only gives us 1. Not sure if that is still possible, but it would be cool.

Personally -

Personally, I vote for a neutral site night game vs. OSU (on OSU's home year of course) at the Indianapolis Speedway.  They already have 250,000 seats.  And then they can add as needed.
