Would you be in favor of hiring a rival coach for Head Coach?

Submitted by sheepdog on

Pretty straightforward question (and pretty hypothetical because this doesn't seem like a legit question to have to answer this time around).

If a rival coach of the caliber of a Kelly, Dantonio, Meyer or one of their capable coordinators (like a Naduzzi) showed interest, would you be in favor of this for the HEAD COACHING job at Michigan?

Also, does anyone know of some examples of this happening before?  Recent example would be USC hiring Sarkisian from Washington, although not the same level as aformentioned rivals.

Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with it - even Tressel or someone - as long as we win.  If we didn't win, the world may end.  Our (arguably) beloved GMatt has had stops at both UM and ND, and was embraced again by the UM community a few years ago, as a DC though, obviously.

Thoughts?

EDIT: In case anyone was confused about which position I am referring to, it would be our J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach.

I'm not unilaterally opposed to a "rival coach" but I don't think I'd want any of those that you specifically mentioned.

Tresel - history at Youngstown and tOSU.  At best, he intentionally turned a blind eye.  At worst / most likely he was orchestrating the whole thing.

Kelly - NO, NO, NO.

Urban - probably the only one I could talk myself into.  He's a d-bag but he recruits, he wins and I suppose his worst offense is screwing over Florida - which I'm actually kind of cool with.  A more polished / politicaly savy Rich Rod without the hillbilly twang.

Dantonio - really good coach who probably would have been a great sucessor to Lloyd if the timing had been different.  He's just been too big an a-hole and said too many inflamatory things about Michigan over the years.

Narduzzi - No head coaching experience and it's very hard to seperate his success from that of Dantonio.  He's definitely earned an entry level HC position but I need to see a few years of success at a smaller school or coordinating in the NFL to consider him.

Narduzzi. How'd everybody like his D's performance at Oregon? UM needs to think bigger, ie, outside the conference. Who's the hottest coordinator in the SEC? There's a place to start looking. just my 2 cents

is the open endorsement of a coach with a two-decades-long history of shady behavior that's been written about extensively. Tressel is a hell of a coach, but I don't want him anywhere near our program. There's no reason we can't hire a great coach who's also not a proven liar and scumbag.

Everyone talks so much crap about all coaches at OSU and our other rivals that we see them as bad guys when the truth is they may or may not be.  Mark D, Urbs, Kelly and Sweater Vest may all be complete dick knuckles but that might just be the tint of blue colored glasses.  I hope whomever makes the choice of our next coach is above that.

I'd take Bielima if available. His team is running the ball well in the sec. He would be able to bring in a higher level qb and wideouts coaching Michigan. His oline and backs will be great. The play action pass game I say would be outstanding with a talented qb hideout corps he would recruit to Michigan. He would win more than in the sec.

I don't think Tressel's that bad. Tatoos aren't that big in the scheme of things. I'd rather we be winning and deal with small off the field issues than be 5-7 every season. I'm so tired of this shit we've been in for 7 years. Notre Dame used to be about winning the right way with 6-6 seasons but then they got desperate and hired Brian Kelly and now they're back to being relevant.

You ever hear the story of BK's team meeting at CMU when he informed the team that he was leaving? HS teammate of mine played at CMU under Kelly. On the eve of CMU's first bowl game in 12 years, he throws together a hastily arranged team meeting that lasts minutes. He basically told the team he was leaving and ended the meeting shortly by saying "I gotta go, there's another team who is waiting for me" and he leaves. Ask anyone who was at that meeting and they'll confirm he is a scumbag.

Narduzzi might be the better candidate, but I don't see him as suitable for Michigan. It might be okay to snag a coach from a rival. I'm just very uncomfortable with hiring someone whose dream job is to coach at our rival. It leaves us in a vulnerable position. I could see Narduzzi bolting whenever the MSU job opened up,.They already look at him as Dantonio's successor. The dynamics with Herman are different. My main concern would be whether he's qualified for the job.

I'll take anyone whos main attribute for being hired is "he doesn't need a map to get around Ann Arbor" like we currently have.

I don't get people get so whiny about what a rival coach says about Michigan. For example if Mark Dantonio says something bad about Michigan;  Michigan fans get bent out of shape over a comment meant to fire up the MSU fans, the ones that actually matter for him. Bo and Woody each had a strong dislike for each others schools and said some pretty wild things in the past. Now as it was then, one is a saint, the other is the devil. It just depended on what side of the border you were on. Some of it is probably very calculated, like a public pep rally for their fan base.

As for a rep for the school I don't think most people outside of the blue bubble really care about how a football coach represents the university. Sure, Brian Kelly had some purple faced moments but at least for me it never took away from ND as whole. Same goes for Brady speaking at a press conference about as inarticulately as possible doesn't change my veiw of Michigan as a school. I really don't think Jim Harbaughs personality and histrionics represented Stanford's academic presitge in a positive or negative way, he just elevated their exposure sold a lot of Stanford t-shirts and hoodies.

Absolutely. However, I think the athletic department is too arrogant to do so. The fan base wouldn't be very accepting either. Two big things that have held this football team back for years.

I would not give a single shit if our new head coach comes from a rival, as long as he has a solid track record. If we strike out on both Harbaughs (which seeks likely), Dan Mullen, and all other top-tier candidates, then I say give Narduzzi a shot if he wants to come here. After all, Bo and Gary Moeller were both Ohio State alums.

EDIT: Having said that, there is no way in hell I would consider Jim Tressel. Aside from his history of shadiness, the fact that he's a hypocritical phony, and the show-cause order, dude is 62 years old. He's done coaching.

I wouldn't care where he came from. I would care if he were a bad person though. Some of the coaches mentioned are good at coaching football, but possibly not the best on an integrity level.  I'd rather lose with a good person than win with a bad person.

Don't get me wrong, I very much love it when Michigan wins, but in the end I care about the team because they represent the University and a lofty set of values. If they were to hire a coach without integrity it would be disingenuous to pretend they represented anything more meaningful than winning and getting money.

If they're a good coach, absolutely. Forming opinions base on where they're from, rather than qualifications, is why we have who we have currently.

Shit like this is going to be why this fanbase better get used to 3 and 4 loss seasons being a good season.

I'm sure rival fan's thought of Bo as a douche when he was kicking their asses up and down the field, throwing fits on sidelines, and making statements like "To Hell with Notre Dame".  You need a mean, tough, son of a bitch who hates losing more than anything.

What's wrong with Kelly? He gets too mad on the sidelines? Big deal, if the extreme is Brady Hoke's butt slapping and clapping or Kelly -- I'll take Kelly.  Who has really noticed Kelly's outburtsts besides the the internet?

Meyer had a clause in his contract at Utah that he could leave for Michigan, Ohio State or ND with a limited or no buy out.  Clearly, coaching here crossed his mind.  if Tressel is still at OSU and what goes down at Florida still happens, who is to say that Meyer might not have found the Michigan job intriguing? Who would have been opposed to him if RR was still 7-5 and losing bowl games in year 4...anyone? What's he done that's so terrible? He was against oversigning in the SEC when other coaches were doing it.  Is he kind of a douche? Ya, sure.  Most successful people are.

Dantonio? I would love a coach with his fire and drive.  The guy hates us so much that losing to us is like an affront to his dignity.  It makes him sick.  I want someone who hates losing to his rivals and wants to curb stomp them every chance he gets.

Yeah shit like not wanting a "circle of trust" and rampant arrest type atmosphere in Ann Arbor, or not taking that great coach who was kicked out for cheating and then vilified by this entire fanbase because "we're the good guys." Notre Dame's going great too. Who cares if that kid died filiming the team on a lift that wasn't rated for high wind conditions?  Who cares if they have to cover for players when things get a little rapey?

You bring up Bo?  How dare you compare these people to Bo.  I think you're confusing "yelling" with "an immoral lack of integrity" they're not the same thing.

"Shit like this..."

Really if you would rather watch an undefeated team that eeked out those last few wins by lying, cheating, and hurting people in the way, that's great for you, but I don't want any part of that team representing the University I went to, and the values it is supposed to hold.

Your rapey argument goes out the window considering the horrible 2 year delayed handling of Gibbons, who went to Michigan btw. Everything else may be vaild, but can you even hold the lift thing against Kelly? I don't know enough about it but it just seems like an unfortunate circumstance, unless Kelly specifically knew that the lift wasn't supposed to function in wind or something...

I'd feel, dirty bringing a rival coach into Michigan, but if he won football games, I'd stop caring and shut my mouth.

I just want a winner. Someone who can develop talent, recruit well, and run the program the right way. Couldn't care less where he came from at the end of the day. He just needs to know how to win football games.

Rivals? For what?

Rght now we're sharing worst overall record in the Big Ten with Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, and Northwestern.

Calling OSU, MSU and ND our rivals is wishful thinking!

Iowa, Maryland and Rutgers have 5-2 records, fergodsakes. PSU has 4 wins. Minnesota - yeah, Minnesota(!) - is 6-1!

Our so-called rivals are snickering up their sleeves, and I don't blame them. Does anyone seriously think for one second that Kelly would leave Notre Dame to jump into our frying pan? Or that Dantonio would come here from MSU to take on our rebuilding project?

Tressel is the president of a college now. He's not coming.

The Harbaughs and Les Miles aren't coming for a zillion reasons. So be realistic.

Here's the kind of coach who might be interested: an up-and-comer from a smaller conference who wants to take on this challenge; a coach from a school that's on the cusp of winning but can't get there because of lack of resources; or someone who's currently underpaid given market value.

Everything else is pie-in-the-sky mental masturbation.

Welcome to Illinois.
