Would Thomas Wilcher be a good assistant coach?

He has had a successful 18 year career as head coach at Cass Tech. From a recruiting standpoint, he would be able to relate well to HS coaches as well as players, especially in the Detroit area.

In addition, his time at U-M (1982-87) paralleled Harbaugh's.

One negative associated with Wilcher might be Jayru Campbell, but being a HS coach, he didn't get to select his players. He had to work with the players that were zoned to his area.

It's true that Cass has over 1000 students, and it's one of three Detroit public high schools you must test to get into.  So it is a desirable location for students and parents.  But King was a powerhouse before Cass and is still a formidable rival.  Renaissance has also ramped up their play on the field and have great, upgraded facilities.

What makes me a believer in Wilcher is that he made Cass a player in the State playoffs.  Normally, the DPS schools don't make it far in the playoffs.  That, along with the kids he develop, tells me he could play a role on the staff.

But he isn't making a jump from Cass Tech to Michigan.  I could see Eastern or Wayne St giving him a shot and him moving up from there.

Maybe there'd be a good non-coaching staff position for him, but he's probably more valuable to us as a UM-friendly Cass Tech coach than he would be on our actual staff.

I played 4 years for Wilcher and think he would be an awesome add. I go out on a limb and say the coaching I recieved at Tech was better than my college coaching at *Unnamed FCS School* -- I heard him brought up for the Eastern opening a while back, too big of a jump for head coach, but as a RB coach, Recruting Coordinator I'd take him.

When he was a senior at Central and I was a soph at a 'burb school.  I thought I was fairly quick until then.  I've followed his career ever since.  Seems like a cool guy.

The thing is, it seems like just about every player we get from Cass Tech is extremely raw when they come in. Jordan Lewis is the only one I can think of in the last 10 years who was ready to play when he stepped on campus.

How's that one guy working out for MSU? Honest question...too lazy to find his real name, but we've got some smart folks on here that will know who I'm referring to.

I heard Wilcher speak to a group of coaches once about how he organizes his program. Two things were apparent:

1. The guy cares deeply about his kids and views his primary goal as getting them into college---any college--- and

2. He seems quite sophisticated in using the respurces at hand (pretty limited) to continue and develop a successful program.

In this lecture he claimed to "leave the x's and o's" to others (his staff) but my impression is that he was being modest.

All in all, I was favorably impressed with him.

While I like the idea of alum Michigan players moving up to staff positions here in A2, Lord knows we need dedicated men and women at the high school level as well. Wilcher might have more impact on more lives at CT than at Michigan.

When wilcher just got there as the track coach. He wasn't coaching football yet. We went from very average to great. He is an incredible coach and motivator and relates to players. We were his first athletes at CT and we stay in touch til this day.

HE STILL holds track records in the PSL and UMICH in hurdles and relays. From the 80's!

He went out of his ways get my twin and I on the UM track team and preferred walk-ins at UM (we went on academic scholarships) as freshmen. Mo was head coach and Carr and Schmitty came to CR to recruit us as preferred guys.

To me it's all about what he wants now in his career. He could have left to go to college at smaller schools by now.

Love the guy and he is UM through and through. !
