WORST STATE EVER MGoShirt on Cable TV

Submitted by Six Zero on
So, after patiently sitting through the TV miniseries event otherwise known as the NFL 2010 Draft, my wife settled in to watch a little television last night. She'd even DVR'd a few things to catch up on after the visual onslaught of the draft ticker and Mel Kiper's hair had finally subsided. I too was there, thumbing through some paperwork and only partially paying attention. On the DVR she recorded a History Channel program called How The States Got Their Shapes, a relatively interesting piece on the borders and exterior proportions of the states, and some of the more interesting stories behind them. Apparently there's a book on which the whole idea was based. I couldn't find out much of a web presence for the TV show, but there's plenty of links to buy the book. It was pretty good, but probably would've been better as an hour program instead of two. Still, I'm pretty big on the History Channel myself, so this certainly beat any chick flick or whatever else might be lurking in digital storage just a button away. Imagine my surprise then, when they waste no time and get right to the story of Toledo, and the border war between Michigan and Ohio. Some backstory on how NY building the Erie Canal, which suddenly made every Great Lakes port a potential cash cow with access to the Atlantic. Interesting enough, but next thing I know the guy's outside the Big House at last year's game, talking about the rivalry and how the Border War tension still exists today every third Saturday in November. She gives me this look, as if I'd planned it or something. "GO BLUE!"'s are being rattled off like crazy, despite the host of the show being some d-bag from Ohio. And then, it happened... After talking to several faces in the crowd(including that big fat bald jackass with the facepaint and the buckeye necklace that we saw far too much of on ABC last year), he's there with some young UM student. He was a thin kid with dark hair, and wearing it proudly as the camera got a long, hard look, was the shirt:

WORST STATE EVER

Maize shirt, blue ink. One of our very own. The d-bag host made sure to comment on the shirt and 'what they think of us here in A2,' etc... But make no mistake, our garment was one of the highlights of the entire Michigan-Ohio segment. I could only wonder which one of you that guy might be... Just thought you all needed to know. I'm sure if Brian had seen it, he would've grinned like a proud father.

Wow, I saw that show too and had the exact same reaction when I saw the kid wearing the T-shirt on the program. Best part about the Michigan / Ohio segment was when the host asked the historian who got the better end of the deal in the settlement of the Toledo dispute. Ohio for getting the Toledo strip or Michigan for getting the Upper Peninsula? Historian responded without almost no hesitation that Michigan got the better end of the bargain.

Given the, uh, traditions they have in Ohio as it relates to Michigan, they have no business complaining about the t-shirt.

Great info! I grew up living just north of the Toledo strip.(thank God) You better believe the locals understand the history of the Toledo War. For me, it adds a whole other dimension to the rivalry that most people, even devoted life-long fans don't understand. Very cool about the game footage/shirt appearance. Wish I could have seen it.
