World Cup Day One Open Thread

Submitted by jamiemac on

How about an open thread for the first day of the World Cup to get us through a Friday afternoon?

Mexico vs South Africa

Odds to win

Mexico +150

South Africa +175

Draw +215

Uruguay vs France

Odds to win

France Even

Uruguay +255

Draw +220

I have Mexico and Uruguay to win in a Group A preview-like post at the JCB. Its interesting because the stat crunchers and the oddsmakers have two divergent opinion on how this group will shake out. Maybe the most competitve group from top to bottom?

We also have a roundtable World Cup discussion posted at the JCB, hopefully the first of many. You may recognize some MGoPosters at the table, so be sure to check it ou.

Enjoy the games.

Edit: Just to lay out my plays, I have mexico and uruguay to win straight up, but I also have both to win on  a parlay to pays 8/1 and a mexico/south africa draw parlayed with a uruguay win at 13/1 odds. Futbol Fever at the JCB, yo!

is South Africa pretty damn fast? they don't develop plays as methodically as Germany or others and this is likely to compensate for outright skill but they're flying in the second half.

IMHO, Mexico needed a win there to advance out of that group. match of that group is now Uruguay vs. Mexico on the 22nd. i would expect France to limp out as the 1.

Personally I'm expecting Mexico to rebound and finish with two wins, making this afternoon's game the match of the group, and I'm expecting Uruguay to win it, leaving France on the outside looking in...

Not only did the announcers miss the offside call, they inexplicably refused to say that it was a clear penalty on Rodriguez when he elbowed Modise to the ground in front of the laughably inept Perez.  Fair play to Modise for playing for a possible goal instead of a penalty, but had he gone to the ground with a bit more gusto, I can't see how the referee would have avoided calling the penalty.

Two thoughts: Tshabalala already in the frontrunning for one of my favorite previously uknown players of the tournament.  Also, how much time do you think Perez and Blanco spend at the buffet together?  I can't think Mexico will go very far with that goofball in net.

Modise might've played through it, but his teammates sure didn't. They didn't show the replay the whole way through so I can't say for sure, but when I saw it live it seemed like one of the South Africans missed a shot at the rebound because he was calling for the pk.

Well, now the host country is 14-0-6 all time in their opening world cup matches. It this was october and futbol americano, I would have been all over numbers like that.

Instead, I lost my Mexico bet and burst the Mexico/Uruguay to win parlay.

I still have Uruguay to win at 2.55/1 odds over France....and thanks to the draw the 13/1 parlay of Mexico Draw/Uruguay Win is at least active.

Come on Uruguay. DO IT!!!
