World Cup Day 6

Submitted by BlueCE on

It looks like favored Chile is going to pull out a win vs. Honduras.  Despite the 1-0 so far I think Chile has dominated (they had a good run in the COMEBOL league to qualify).

Really looking forward to seeing favored Spain in the WC debut.  Let's see if Torres lives up to expectations and if Spain can finally perform up to expectations (still amazing that the best they have ever done is quarterfinals).

And then in the afternoon we get started with the 2nd round of games for each team with South Africa and Uruguay, both teams needing a win if they want to pass to the next round (though they'd still be in it with a tie).

I mean, it doesn't look intentional.  I don't like that the ref has to give a red there.  Maybe a yellow, I dunno, the punishment, to me, doesn't fit the crime to go along with the PK.

Which is why I said the ref had too.  I just think that he shouldn't have to.  I think who reviews the international soccer rules (I'm guessing it's FIFA) needs to review this rule and leave it up to the ref and how he viewed the intent of the penelty.  To me, a punishment should fit a crime, and in this case, a PK, and being out for this game and the next game, doesn't fit the crime.  I think this rule should be reviewed, IME

Unfortunately the ref doesn't really have much of a choice there.  He has to give a red.  The keeper didn't deny an attack, he denied an obvious goal scoring opportunity.  Pretty much a red card by definition, regardless of how little contact there was.  It was a foul that directly prevented a goal - gotta go with red.

Too bad.
