Woolfolk - Injury Update

Woolfolk on his recovery:

@mudekwu yea I could be ready by then [to play in a bowl game] for sure, BUT the question is will I be able to play without burning my redshirt

Fairly certain that playing in the bowl game would burn his redshirt, but it's good to see the progress update.  Hopefully, this means he'll be full steam for spring practice and summer workouts.

It's going to be tough for him to stand healthy on the sidelines during the bowl game, but I think it's far more important (for him, the team, my sanity next year) that he maintain his redshirt.

Hopefully this means he can participate even at 1/4 speed in the practices before the bowl game. That extra time to ease back in could be huge.

First off: lol ahahahahahahaha

OK, to your question, I'm pretty sure we won't know until after the season, when M submits Devin's medical hardship request to the NCAA.  Perhaps between the end of the regular season and the bowl game.

It is very rare the NCAA denies a medical redshirt. This is largely due to the fact it's hard to call bullshit on an injury. There were stats posted on here before showing how many are given to certain conferences on average. Those numbers showed Alabama abusing this loop hole if you can believe that.

you're talking about Alabama's use of medical hardships, where the player is removed from the roster permanently, but still has a free academic ride.  Medical redshirts are handed out with the understanding that, but for the "injury" the player would have played.  At least, I think that's the gist of it.

After Tate went in, and then fumbled his first snap, the ball was turned over.  So Tate immediately comes off the field, and talks briefly with Rodriguez.  Rodriguez does not yell at Tate, he doesn't wave his arms, roll his eyes, or anything else.  (Later, as we heard from Tate himself, his hand had gotten sweaty from his handwarmer, and that contributed to the fumble.)  Tate then goes back behind the bench and he starts throwing, and I couldn't see who was throwing with him.  It might have been Devin, but I don't think so.  (Although, whoever was tossing it back to Tate, was firing some pretty tight spirals.)  It was NOT Jack Kennedy, because he was wired in with the headset.

So that's the story with the mid-game throwing on the sidelines.  Devin didn't need to flex his throwing hand.  Tate did.  And no, throwing on the sidelines wouldn't have anything to do with a medical redshirt.

Just happy to see his recovery is doing that well.  No need to rush things even if it didn't burn his redshirt.  Take your time TWoolf29 and come back for the spring.

I am glad to see he's improving. I am sure the rehab with Coach Barwis can only help also. (I'd like to pass on a belated congratulations to Coach Barwis and the staff regarding our team's conditioning over the overtimes yesterday, also)

Great to hear that his rehab is coming along well, but yeah, playing in the bowl would end his career.  Unless he's just ready to move on, it's not worth it.  Being able to practice would be very helpful for him, though.

at the same time, I was going to make some sly comment about waiting to hear about it in the form of a Woolfolk Tweet.

Then I click on the thread and find out that it was all about a Woolfolk Tweet from the beginning.  I should have known.  Sometimes reality just triumphs over sarcasm.

I feel certain that Troy will overcome this injury, and that he'll be ready to play again and that he could help transform our defense.

That is, if random Tweets don't get him kicked off the team first.

I saw this thread and thought, "Oh no! Why does every good thing have to be followed by bad news?  I wonder how bad it is."  Instead, its good news.  Whew!

Keep working hard Troy.  Get that NCAA thing confirmed in writing before you play.  If not, we'll see you next year!

I saw him make a great tackle, but he was toasted often in that game.  If we don't get to the QB on the last 2-pt. try, he's 3-4 yards beaten by a crossing route for the tying score.

Improving? No doubt.  Locked down this season? Perhaps.  Locked down for the conceivable future? Not by a long shot.

We need T-Wolf and Floyd back next year at full strength. In watching the game yesterday and some NFL games today, defenses need good depth to give players a rest. We need more depth so that future teams have starting juniors and seniors with sophomores and freshman getting some playing time throughout the game. Keep getting stonger JT and T-Wolf and get ready for next year.

Regardless of whether it would burn his redshirt, Woolfolk shouldn't play in the bowl game.  Why take any chances in a somewhat meaningless game unless he's 125%

the nice thing about avery's play yesterday is that there were nice things to say about avery's play yesterday.

last year, kovacs was in the same place, with lots of room for improvement, and that is working out.

The only relevant information I could find is Bylaw 14.2.4.3.5 : Reinjury in Second Half of Season.

A student-athlete who suffers an injury in the first half of the season that concludes with the NCAA championship or who suffers an injury after the first day of classes in his or her senior year of high school attempts to return to competition during the second half of that season and then is unable to participate further as a result of aggravating the original injury does not qualify for the hardship waiver.

We'll see you in August, 2011 Troy.
