Woolfolk at CB or FS next year?

Submitted by cypress on

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I'd like to hear opinions on what people think would be best for the defense. To me, it makes much more sense to have him play FS, assuming he is healthy. He was certainly going to play CB this year, because frankly, we didnt have any other options. But next year it would seem that Cam Gordon would be better suited at Spur where his lack of speed is not an issue. With Woolfolks speed, I'd like to have him covering the back half of field, and its his more natural position. Seems like I read something that our defense was much better with TW at FS and we went downhill when he was forced to move to CB. Obviously there would be some switching around because we would have a logjam at Spur. Here are my projections as to what we could see..interested in hearing other opinions.

Spur: C. Gordon/ T. Gordon/ Hawthorne

CB: Floyd/ (Backup one of the 3 current freshmen)

CB: Winner of Spring battle between Avery, Christian and Talbott

FS: Woolfolk/ Carvin (Can he play FS?)/ Vinopal/ (Perhaps Avery Walls

SS: Kovacs or M Robinson

JT has had the challege to come in and be the number one corner when a year ago he was the 4th stringer .. IMO this kid has done very well for us .. He has made a few mistakes and got thrashed last week but to say he will get beat out by a freshman Noo way .. T-Wolf and JT will be the number one and 2 corner next year like it shoulda been this year .. and with JT having a year as the number 1 CB i feel the D will be much better .. Yes JT has made some mistakes but he is still very green and has really only played in a few games before this year ...

It's too early to say. Woolfolk can play either well so it depends on who steps up more: Cam/Vinopal or one of the freshman corners. Woolfolk should get stuck in whatever would otherwise be the darkest hole of despair.

that Freshman name  is Hasean or Karlos, I will have to go against your "I dont want a true freshman at FS" rant...TW has to play CB in my opinion, because no CB has shown the ability so far to step up in his absence. If you can have decent coverage on the corners, it can allow the D to mix it up so much more than putting TW at deep safety and still being terrible on the corners. Also stop comparing to last year when he played FS...we also had a #6 named Warren who wasn't to shabby able to play CB which we dont have now.

CB-Floyd/ Avery & TW/ CC with Talbott fighting for some serious nickel/dime time also. If we can go into the year with those five healthy at CB, I feel good about the CB situation for next year.

And those who dont think MRob will overtake the job, need to realize if we had a veteran D and could afford to play him with experienced players around him ala Tony Jefferson @ Ohklahoma or Dietrich Riley @UCLA..I'm positive he would be playing right now. Kovacs is a consistent security blanket for us at this point. We know what were going to get week in and out unlike other positions that aren't manned by Mike Martin. Also people are selling Thomas Gordon short, I'm really impressed with the kid actually and think we might have stumbled upon a good one.

I think he should play safety.  This isn't based on anything, just that it would be nice to have a smart, athletic player who can save our young CBs after they make mistakes and prevent long touchdowns.
