The Wolverine Logo
I posted this question as a comment on another post about a week ago but it was buried.
What are your opionions on the lack of Michigan memorabilia (shirts, hats, etc.) with a Wolverine on them? The only wolverine I ever see these days is the retro one with the stiff upper lip wearing a hat. It seems like through the 70's and 80's, the wolverine was a lot more prevelant on Michigan shirts. What happened!? I, for one, think the wolverine is awesome and should be more widely used.
To give you an example, the wolverine on top of the block M in my icon photo is along the lines of what I'm talking about.
Spin off question.. Do you own a piece of retro Michigan clothing that you still hold dear because of it's uniqueness?
(BTW- This is my first post, so take it easy. Thanks!)

I am not a fan of cartoony logos though. I like a more classic look.

And wife (Illinois undergrad), continually asks me why I have a skunk covering up the Block M.
January 28th, 2015 at 11:00 AM ^
While tempted, I'll refrain from giving you suggestions on what to say to your wife.
January 28th, 2015 at 11:14 AM ^
I think your wife lied to you. She went to msu.

Why are there so many of us who married U of I gals? I have a colleague who also is a UM grad with a U Illinois wife.
January 28th, 2015 at 12:00 PM ^
I married a Wisco gal - she's the best... except for when she's not
January 28th, 2015 at 11:26 AM ^
An Illinois undergrad would know all about bad smells.

I have a sparty friend -- he actually got his coaching start there (non-revenue sport) and he calls them the skunk bears all the time... which is fine as that's what Native Americans called wolverines and I view that as an honor.
So -- the joke is on my friend, your wife, and everyone else who doesn't know their history.
Go Blue!!!

All that does is cover the block M.

Back in the Fall of '77! On the front it said: "Oh How I Hate Ohio State!" And on the back the One Finger Salute "Woody is Number One" (I wore it to school one day and was told to go home and change it)!
January 28th, 2015 at 10:37 AM ^
I'm not insinuating that the block M logo should change. Just that the wolverine should be more involved in Michigan gear.

At last nights Basketball game, I noticed the chairs for the Nebraska bench had the old M logo with a bar through it. I thought those were outlawed. ? I used to like them, but now that they've gone away for the most part, I think they look pretty old school now.

But does anyone know where or how to get a high-res file of the stiff upper lip logo, suitable for enlargement to an 18" decal?
I've scoured the internet. I previously went through this exercise to find a high-res image of the helmet. I contacted the AD (no help, as usual), M Den, Riddell, everyone I could think of. I came up with one, but it wasn't ideal for my use.
Anyone?

High res enough?

Someone resized the logo in a thread: http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/vintage-michigan-wolverine-logo

I've never seen it before.
January 28th, 2015 at 2:21 PM ^
...where the wolverine is drawn slightly differently and is not colored in at all (only blue ink with yellow background relief); unfortunately don't have a photo of it, but my parents have it at their house (with Butch Woolfolk's autograph on it)

Just once in my life I would like to see a wolverine in the wild. Also would like to see Sasquatch.
January 28th, 2015 at 11:15 AM ^
It could only happen once. Because both would kill you.

While hiking Crow's Pass, just outside of Anchorage. Apparently they're only dangerous when cornered or hungry.

That is incredibly horrible.

This one is the best by far. If you see this face coming at you you know you're about to get your ass kicked.
January 28th, 2015 at 12:03 PM ^
I love it - has been the background on my phone and laptop for some time. Sure it's cartoonish, but I appreciate that it doesn't try to be realistic in its attempt to capture the aggressiveness of the wolverine
January 28th, 2015 at 12:27 PM ^
but it is now making me wonder, Did he steal Popeye's hat?????
January 28th, 2015 at 12:36 PM ^
Fuck Popeye... never trust a squinty-eyed sailor
/s I actually respect Popeye and all those who put their lives at risk on the ocean, but you have to admit his taste in women is suspect... Olive Oyl? Really???

It was a long cruise there sailor.

It looks handicapped.

I like this logo. Got the decal on the back window of my truck. He does seem to be a bit confused about his identity though

I'd love to see some twin city football socks with the block M
January 28th, 2015 at 10:58 AM ^
The claw marks in the background are kinda cool.
January 28th, 2015 at 11:07 AM ^
I like the vintage one and have a couple of t-shirts with it. I think it's awesome. I don't think I'd wear anything with a new, modern cartoonish thing on it. I also think it gets in the way of the block M when used like that. Too busy because you need so much detail to make it look like a wolverine and the M is so clean and simple. As for vintage clothing, I'm always looking for an old "ugly" or obnoxious sweater to buy on EBay. I know there is a vintage store in Chicago where a buddy found some old NFL sweaters from the 80's for a few teams--the Ditka style ones with the horizontal bars. I'm guessing I'd have better luck if I hit some garage sales or estate sales in Michigan but unfortunately that isn't possible

my second is the throwback U logo. That bird just looks pissed!
January 28th, 2015 at 11:26 AM ^
Plus he has a boo-boo on his face. Maybe the refs kicked one of the opposing players out of the game, that usually makes me mad.
January 28th, 2015 at 12:29 PM ^
emphysema and he's not looking forward to running.
January 28th, 2015 at 11:19 AM ^
I remember wearing it all the time when I was younger and in the 90s. The look seems a little dated these days. I like it as a throwback/retro look, but not for all the newest apparel.
January 28th, 2015 at 11:25 AM ^
I say we just use Woodley's arm as logo...

So, I would love to see a stylized wolverine in a promo video for Michigan athletics. I've thought of this for years when seeing the Alaska Nanooks 2010 College Hockey video. It is gloriously cheesy. The trick is to pull off something that is over the top but not embarassing. Here's what they did:
January 28th, 2015 at 12:41 PM ^
That video IS embarrassing -- even the WWE would look at a polar bear flying a fighter jet promoting a hockey team and say, WTF?!
Also embarrassing is the space bitches space video with the all UM crew which is orbiting around the Earth the WRONG freaking way.
January 28th, 2015 at 11:45 AM ^
Seen something very similar on hockey jerseys.
Oh...and send up the signal to WD for this topic. Can't believe he hasn't been on this thread yet--must have class or some other silly excuse.

Hockey jersey from the 1940's.
