Wolverine-Badger Challenge

Submitted by UMProud on

"C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan has challenged University of Wisconsin’s American Family Children’s Hospital in a competition to see which institution can raise the most money for pediatric cancer research.

The winner will be named before kickoff at the Oct.1 football game between the two schools at Michigan Stadium. A childhood cancer patient from each hospital has been invited onto the field during the trophy presentation.

The Wolverine-Badger challenge kicks off the month-long Block Out Cancer campaign at Mott, designed to increase awareness about the need for pediatric cancer research during September’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

“Regardless of who wins the challenge, the real winners will be the children who benefit from cancer research,” says Valerie Opipari, M.D., a pediatric oncologist and chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Communicable Diseases at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.

“Ultimately, we are both fighting on the same team with the shared goal to end childhood cancer.”

This is great. I'll have to challenge my son, who just started grad school at Wisconsin (although he's really not in a financial position to donate => I may need to donate for both schools). We also have good friends who's son (now 25 years old) was diagnosed with lymphoma a couple years ago and treated at Wisconsin. He's recovered, now working for the university foundation there.

I just threw it out there on Twitter and Facebook, and I might even talk to the foundation which is a subsidiary of my own company to see if they might put a little money towards this. They are alwats looiking for opportunities to do some good in the community, or at least above and beyond what they already do from day to day.

While I applaud this project, be aware that the crowd funding site takes nearly 10% of your donation as an administrative fee. Better to simply donate directly to Mott. But, if it helps us beat Wisconsin at something, go ahead and donate here.

10% is actually much, much better than a whole slew of non-profits. the non-profit that I work for takes 10% too. but we also don't pay all of our staff. I have to raise my own salary. Lots of places take 20-40%. but usually any non-profit will allow you to donate your full amount without any deduction by request.

A lot of nonprofits have administrative costs associated with fundraising, though. I'm fine with a nonprofit taking 20% to pay the salaries of its staff if those staff members increase donations 50% through their efforts.

This just seems like a site taking 10% without providing much in the way of services.

I know a kid who's a patient at Mott.  Played rugby with his Dad, known his Mom for years, I saw him the day he was born.  He had a large tumor removed from brain.  The treatment he received at Mott, per his Mother (a dyed-in-the-wool Spartan), could not have been better, and continues to be so during his recovery.  The people there are indeed angels.  I can not imagine having the strength to deal with that type of tragedy--especially amongst children--all day every day.  They are a blessing and an obvious credit to not only U-M, but the entire country.
