WNIT Sweet Sixteen 7PM 03/25/09

Submitted by Hard Gay on
I realize most of you will dismiss women's basketball as a joke and the WNIT as even bigger joke, but Michigan has a really good chance to win the tournament, and fan support can really help this team. The last game, Crisler was overrun by Toledo fans of all people, they even brought their own band and outnumbered Michigan fans by a pretty good amount. I bet a lot of you have nothing better to do at 7PM tomorrow, and tickets are only 6 dollars for what might be the last basketball game in Crisler for the 2009-2010 athletic season. WOOO WOMEN'S BBALL YEAH!

The game tomorrow is against Northwestern who they have already faced three times this year - two losses in the regular season and a win in the Big 10 tournament. One minor note - this is the third round/sweet 16. If they win, Michigan will be in the quarterfinals against the winner of Syracuse/VCU.

Working at the scorer's table (I'm the stats guy on the computer). I can second how frustrating it was to walk in the arena on Sunday to a house of mostly Toledo fans. It was even worse when Coach Borseth took Krista Phillips out for a deserved ovation (22 pts, 11 reb, 2 blk) and she was showered with boos from the Toledo faithful behind me. So, please come out if you have the time/are in the area. The girls could use your support.

I am from Toledo and have been to a few of their games. They do have a HUGE fan support (bc mens team was like 4-22), but watch out they are pretty good. Fair warning to those few attending Shafir an Israeli for Toledo might be the scapiest player i have ever see.

There was none on Sunday, even though there had been a small but vocal bunch on Friday night. Really poor turnout from the students -- it was pretty much all families like ours. We did our best but were sadly outnumbered by Toledo fans.

He totally won me over a few years back with that incredible rant in a post game press conference. He wasn't douchey. Just a little bit critical of his players, but mostly just showing raw intensity and passion. He ended up apologizing, which was appropriate. But I think he got a lot of mileage out of that rant. Go women's b-ball!

A decent crowd of a couple thousand--plus a Michigan victory of course--quite possibly translates into another home game either Sunday or Monday. (Attendance at Syracuse's second-round game was only 316.) For those who haven't been to a women's game, not only are the tickets cheap but the parking in the Crisler lot is also free. Seating is general admission. The announcer, unfortunately, is the same "WHO WANTS A PIZZA!!!!!!" guy. On the other hand, the odds of getting a free pizza or T-shirt are much improved.
