Wisconsin BBall Postgame Thoughts
But did you watch that pass? He almost fell inbounds passing it and the only guy open was #1. Say, where was that extra defender?
It makes a huge difference. A defender would shadow the inbounder making him take time if the inbounder decides to run the baseline. If noone guarda him he has no pressure to move or if he does he only focuses on the pass and not the pass and the defender in front of him.
It's not at all uncommon to see a defended inbounder call timeout to avoid a 5-second violation, and since Ryan used their last TO right before the play, there would have been even more pressure on the inbounder.
"A lot of people gamble, don't you think? I think I'd be a pretty sure bet." - Denard Robinson re: NFL Draft
It never should have come down to that prayer 3 by Brust.
Before Hardaway Jr. made his 3 (which really was fortuntate becuase we didn't run a good play at all there) we had missed our last 6 shots. A couple were layups.
Same thing in OT. McGary gets the steal but misses an easy one,...Hardaway Jr. too hard off the glass. ...ugghhh...
Agree with the other posters that we need to guard the inbounds play. Way too easy for these guys (Turner and Brust) to catch, take a dribble of two and get the shot off.
Oh....and....WILL YOU RUN SOME DAMN BOX OUT DRILLS IN PRACTICE!
We just blew the Big Ten. major coaching blunder down the stretch . You foul!!! Period. No way the other team can get a 3 point shot off. This one is one coach B. One other thought...Stauskas and GRIII have been very very passive in the last few games I've seen. We need them to produce and have the confidence to take big shots in close games. This is particularly true of Stauskas who is supposed to be an elite 3 point shooter. I saw Stauskas pass up several good shot oportunities...
Can we all agree that Horford does not deserve to start again this year
That likely seals our conference fate combined with the Indiana loss. Don't think we can win it if the rest of the season plays out as expected.
HAIL.
we've seen it multiple times- he struggles at end of games. how many games have ended with wild 3point misses by trey burke?
pbmd
We don't even get inside the 3 point line. Very, very bothersome.
This game, both OSU games this year, last year's Arkansas game. Although 2 of those shots were halfway in and bounced out.
This sucks.
Go Blue! Always!
And you have a much shorter pass or a long pass w air bound to get picked off. D1 coaches and their staff outthink themselves.
After THJ's three, I thought we had a good shot at finishing this tough four game stretch at 3-1, which would have been huge. Now we have to hope 2-2 with the next one being one the road in very hostile territory. Le sigh.

Should be able to role a banged up Sparty on Tuesday.
Times will people continue to predict us "rolling" quality teams on the road before they begin to realize that doesn't happen, and no, we aren't going to roll state anywhere, much less Lansing, sorry.
Denard Robinson......They're not going to catch him!
Please dude - its on the road, against the current leader of the Big 10, against an arch rival. We are not going to "roll anyone" in the top echelon on the road.
Really? This team can't win on the road against a quality opponent. MSU's season reminds of the ND football season. They never look dominate but the bounces always seem to go their way and they always seem to figure out a way to win close games. Lose the game on Tuesday and the chance of winning the Big Ten regular season title is basically done.
"But in the tire fire that was last year's secondary he showed a little spark." - Brian Cook
How about we just got beat on an incredibly lucky shot? I let him have that 100 times and watch him miss 99.
Dakich makes Dick Vitale very bearable.
Sometimes team get lucky and make 35 footers. But on the plus side GR3 draft stock is falling off a cliff and Morgan will be back next week. I think we can all agree that is very important after seeing how we look I paint without him
My spelling sucks.
How the hell did that happen? Also, I am sure teams have gone entire games without any FTAs but it can't be often that a team gets only 2 in a OT game.
Just an all around annoying game.
I just don't get it. You have to, have to, have to put somebody (McGary) on the inbounder. Bruesewitz almost fell in bounds making the pass and easily caught Brust in stride. That doesn't happen if somebody is in his face. I am so pissed off right now. When will Beilein learn????
It's irrelevent if Levert does his job fouling the his man right away.
Blank.....Blank......You're not looking at the big picture here.
You're assuming Levert was supposed to foul Brust. I don't think that was the case and if it was the case, guarding the inbounder makes the pass harder and allows Levert to be there when Brust catches it instead of chasing him from behind.
It's already been reiterated plenty of times, Beilein wanted LeVert to foul him, and not just LeVert whoever received the ball he wanted to player hammered. I agree about guarding the inbound but LeVert clearly was on Brust's hip and had a chance to foul and he didn't. He's a young guy and will learn but he botched that play horribly.

504 errors all around!
...our so-called half-court offense. That's all I've got.
"One man. Goodbye! Hello Heisman!"
Wisconsin took 5 times as many free throws as us
Me fail English? That's unpossible!
He's the difference maker in all of this. Somehow, somebody with a nice shot, relatively thick 6'7" frame who can jump out of the gym can completely disappear. Everyone else is playing tough and the guy formerly known as GRIII looks like that middling pick in school yard ball that you pick just to not screw up.
First, against OSU, I figured "Ehhh....first big pressure road game...no big deal." Then at Indiana, I figured, "He has some sweet athletes guarding him....and hes on the road....no big deal." Then at HOME against OSU, I was discouraged and figured, "I guess he just can't hack it against equivalent athletes yet."
Now, here we have Wisconsin. A team that can't get 12 inches off of the floor, and this guy can't play defense, rebound or create any sort of a shot.
I'll just chalk it up to being a soft freshman. Nevertheless, when Morgan comes back, I would be surprised if Beilein didnt start going to more 2 big man sets b/c at this point, even Zack Novack (we miss you Zack) has a bigger presence on the interior.
1. Guard the inbound pass
2. Mitch, I love you, but you ARE allowed to dunk it.
3. Can anyone create their own shots besides Burke and Hardaway?
4. Can anyone play "angry" besides Hardaway and McGary?
5. You cannot win games by talent and stars alone. Guys have to start doing the little things.
6. GRIII, where art thou?
7. I miss you, Jordan Morgan
8. Big Ten refs, man...
9. Bo Ryan is an actual badger.
10. Dan Dakich is a sack of buttholes.
"Welllllllll..."
Did you watch the game? Hard to dunk when the defender hammers your arms.
We'll be okay in the B1G picture which is what matters. indiana will lose tomorrow and state will lose tuesday.
My only question is-
Y U NO FOUL DAMMNIT?!?!
When the ADept sells special jerseys and gear, you'll see my picture next to the targeted customer crowd. A sheep.....but a Blue one.....
Our defense isn't good at all. Wisconsin scored 65 on us!! Fire Rich Rod! Or something.
HAIL.
I can't even be on this website right now. Why did that shot go in? Why did we get no calls from the refs? Why didn't we foul? Why couldn't we man up and win it in Overtime? Why does God hate me? But why did that shot go in?
We seem to be solely a guard weave and dribble-drive offense.
Stauskas & Robinson are statues in the corner.
"Everybody wants to be a hero, so to speak. But it takes everybody." - Charles Woodson
life trolling.
This will not be popular and this is not a knee jerk reaction to this one loss, but this team will not be winning the national championship this year. It does not matter what happens at MSU on Tuesday. It does not matter that they beat OSU. The past three games have proven Michigan is not a team that can impose its will on another team. You can not make it through 6 games in the tournament without being able to impose your will on the opponent. The Indiana game, OSU game, and Wisconsin game were all played how the opposing team wanted to play.
Beilein chose to shorten the game against OSU and it almost cost him. He chose to shorten the game at Wisconsin and it did cost him. Both of those decisions played right into the opponents strengths.
I believe Beilein is a great coach and has a great coaching staff. I believe Michigan has very talented players who play hard and want to win. I don't think they know how to play at an elite level consistently and that's what it takes to win it all. No excuses about the schedule. That's what the sweet 16 through the championship will be like.
"Anyone who isn't confused, really doesn't understand the situation." - Edward R. Murrow
I actually agree, but that's not going out on a limb here. Only 1 team is going to win it all so to say it won't be us is not exactly an indictment against us. However, depending on matchups, we might not get past the first weekend. Now THAT'S going out in a limb.
Wins championships as well as road games, defensively we are not good enough to win it all, we just gave up 65 to Wisconsin. Our half court offensive sets are brutal as well.
Denard Robinson......They're not going to catch him!
has a guy on one of their blogs saying this exact thing, and they're all right. Which means one of them is actually wrong. Hopefully it's you.
This post would have earned more merit if it was made after the OHIO game or after the NW game. It's a complete knee jerk reaction to a dong-punchy loss. No one in D1 is dominant and M had just as good a chance to win as anyone else. Tourney play is about guard play. Who has better guards than M?
"Ack ack!"
Especially with no 1 guy who can impose his will. Burke's great, but a solid defender can force him to take ridiculous shots or pass too late in the shot clock. Even Hardaway's 3 at the end of reg was a bad play that was bailed out with his great shot.
Couple that with a lack of set plays and we're utterly predictable on most O possessions.
UW isn't talented or tough enough to control the game, but they did. OT in particular.
Ugh.
"Everybody wants to be a hero, so to speak. But it takes everybody." - Charles Woodson
Meh. Anything can happen in a 3 week period. Seriously if Canadian Bacon pulls 70% of that Glen Rice 89 shooting performance and everyone else plays the same as they are now (even with GRIII disappearing) they will be difficult to beat in any game.
There is nothing more debilitating in college basketball than some kid going 5-8 or 6-9 on 3 pointers, esp if he makes it look effortless. Stauk can do that, but the question is will he do that in March. We shall see, I think he is the X factor. Burke is the type of player that can lead a team through the grind of the tournament but he needs some help other than THJ and McGrady.
How many teams in college basketball right now can "impose their will" on others? Indiana didn't "impose their will" on us in our loss, and they lost to this Wisco team at HOME. Every contender has a bad loss right now and no one looks anywhere near perfect. We all need to relax.
You can't win a marathon without putting some bandaids on your nipples!

I don't know that covering the inbound guy would have made a difference. After a made basket, the inbounder can run the baseline, so it's not that hard for him to get the pass off.
We simply needed to foul. It was common sense, and Beilein apparently was calling for it. LeVert for some reason didn't get the message.
